Finally! Protection for Gingers!

Rosi Prescott, chief executive of Central YMCA, said if there was strong evidence that appearance-related discrimination was widespread, the Equalities Act should be broadened to include it.

That would make it a punishable offence to harass someone because of their appearance, for example by drawing attention to their weight.

She said: \”All the rules that apply under the Equalities Act now would also apply to appearance-related discrimination. They would be applied consistently.\”

Alternatively we could go back to the old sticks and stones…..yes, that\’s a better idea. Let\’s simply scrap the Equalities Act.

  1. On the bright side, England would end up with the Ashes permanently. Half the Australian team would be in chokey by lunch on the first day.

  2. so would that mean that a doctor cannot say “you are overweight, it would be a good idea to diet”?
I assume that WeighWatchers would become an illegal organisation too?!

  3. All the rules that apply under the Equalities Act now would also apply to appearance-related discrimination. They would be applied consistently.”

I look forward to having my application for the role of Calvin Klein underwear model accepted without delay, then.

  4. Portemat: no, just as at the moment a doctor is currently able to say “you are a woman over 25, so it would be a good idea to get a cervical smear”, despite age and gender already falling within the Equalities Act. For it to be harassment, it actually has to be, y’know, harassment.

  5. Tim N: no, just as at the moment Triumph can turn you down as a bra model cos you’re a chap (even if you do have C-cup moobs) despite irrelevant sex discrimination already being prohibited under the Equalities Act. For it to be unlawful discrimination, it actually has to be, y’know unlawful discrimination.

Indeed you can see that this UK government is really just a continuation of the previous one, because it we still have all Labour’s departments. Why have we got minsters for Housing, Equality, Women, and Children? Let’s save some money (in the longer term at least) and scrap them all.

  7. Yeah, well,y’know unlawful discrimination is only as far away as the smart gob of a shyster lawyer and the earhole of a thick judge can stretch.

  8. Wont go down well with the quacks. they already want to specifically discriminate(refuse service) against the overweight.
btw NZ treasury have explicitly stated that smokers are cheaper for the health service cos they die earlier and quicker. They did it while raising the duty on fags which removes some of it’s kudos, but still
