No you can\’t have it all: Marissa Mayer edition

Bright, good looking, pregnant, new CEO of Yahoo. Marissa Mayer shows that you can have it all, eh?

Nope.

A decade on, it’s refreshing to learn that the Yahoo bosses don’t believe motherhood and executive office are incompatible. Mayer has already said, with geeky grit, “My maternity leave will be a few weeks long and I’ll work throughout it.”

Everything is always a series of trade offs. It is, I\’m afraid, simply impossible to have it all.

  1. Mayer has already said, with geeky grit, “My maternity leave will be a few weeks long and I’ll work throughout it.”
Which let’s face it, is something most women, given a choice, do not choose.

  2. “My maternity leave will be a few weeks long and I’ll work throughout it.” How does she know?

  3. Hahhahhaha!

“My maternity leave will be a few weeks long and I’ll work throughout it.”

    Brilliant.

    First time mum, I’m guessing.

Yep – Wikipedia confirms it – first time mum.

  4. It’s not unusual in the US. One woman I worked with was back at her desk 1 week after having her (first) kid. And did fine. Don’t know about the kid of course.
My company provided a special room for nursing moms to decant and store their milk.
In this particular case, it all depends on her management style. I doubt she’ll have the emotional bandwidth to be very detailed. But then Yahoo needs vision and a good team to execute it.
Hope she pulls it off (both turnround and kid).

  5. “Nannies. Several.”

Then she doesn’t have it all.

I wouldn’t say it’s pleasurable but there’s something magical about being up on your own at 3am with your new baby.

Also, highly successful and driven people tend to be a bit odd as if there was a missing connection in their brain. Try explaining the pleasure of the snooze button to a workaholic.

Nope. Definitely not got it all.
