Surely a better way is to reduce taxation across the board and cope with the reduced revenue by not pissing away so much of it. ChrisM July 18, 2012 at 12:41 pm Ian, I am not sure that is the case. At the moment many of the same people both are taxed AND then receive benefits of one form or another to top up incomes that have been eroded by tax. For such people the “paying” of tax is a fiction anyway. It is better not to tax them in the first place, then they would not need their incomes topped up by benefits. This would save money twice over, once on the 16p/£ it costs on average to raises tax, and again on what must surely be a comparable figure to disburse benefits.
