Dear Mr Howker. You\’re a twat

But today they are wrongfooted on two fronts. For the left it is government\’s role to fix environmental problems, provide healthcare and address poverty. The right, meanwhile, looks to markets to improve health provision, trade carbon credits and raise standards of living at home and abroad. Both models undermine the value of the individual contributor, leaving him or her to wonder \”what\’s the point\”?

So Mr. Howker, please define \”the market\”.

What\’s that? Yes, correct, it\’s simply the aggregation of individual actions. Individual voluntary actions even. Within that market people sometimes act purely as individuals and often, even most of the time, in voluntary cooperation with each other. Form organisations even.

Thus Save the Children, one of the charities you mention, is a market actor and whether people support it or not is similarly a market action.

  1. It would be interesting one day to squeeze into the mind of a typical leftist and fully understand what they think “the market” is.

  2. I can think of several definitions of “the market”, but none of them is “the aggregation of individual actions”. Tim is talking nonsense and Howker, on the evidence presented, is not a twat. It’s clear what he means by ‘markets’, and his meaning is one often seen across the political spectrum.
