Well, yes, I would describe politicians in this manner

At fiery rallies, shedelivers similar nationalist rhetoric in front of images of Evita. But according to a former Kirchner insider, she now also suffers the same delusions of grandeur and power.

“She is a paranoid, arrogant person which in turn hides a deep insecurity,” he said. “She’s also a very mistrustful person who surrounds herself with a small cadre of yes men and yes women.” “The Casa Rosada operates like a court. She’s the queen surrounded by courtesans who only want to deliver good news.”

I have a
feeling that the correct translation there is courtiers, not courtesans. But expensive whores describes politicians well enough.

  1. Weird webby thing – Chrome keeps refusing to update the front page any further than “Oh Dear” 20th Feb. Fine in Firefox.

  2. I’m surprised you’ve not taken the opportunity to comment on the relative value for money of courtesans and politicians. Talk about missing am open goal.

  3. Actually, courtesan was originally the female form of courtier, just that the usage there moved to reflect the reality.

  4. Argentina is cursed to perform the same pantomime over and over again.

Is the country cursed with generation after generation of corrupt and useless politicians or does a culture get the goverment it deserves? Almost certainly the latter.

  5. or does a culture get the goverment it deserves? Almost certainly the latter.

But the latin cultures just get more expressively useless pols than the anglo ones – the character may vary but the competence (okay, actually, lack thereof) does not.

Kirchner versus Harman (or Smith, Abbot, Winterton, Ashton etc, etc, etc)- if that was your choice? The expansively insane ego-maniac or the lucretian plotter. Given that useless has to be accepted? At least we all know where nu-Evita is coming from.

  6. SE, I applaud the colour of your descriptions. Only trouble is, I can’t tell which are supposed to apply to Kirchner and which to Harman et al!
