Timmy elsewhere

At the ASI.

Is it female education that increases economic growth or does economic growth increase the incentives to educate women?

  1. So Much for Subtlety

There should be a simple way to test this. Literacy is highly dependent on religion (and Communism). If you live in a mainly Protestant country, the chances are high that you will be literate. If you live in a Catholic one, it is much less so. And a Muslim one even less so – especially if you are a a girl.

Admittedly mainly literacy is based on wealth, but the next most important thing does appear to be your religion. Although if you used to be part of the Soviet Union you are likely to be literate as well.

So Jamaica is a mainly Protestant country with very high rates of literacy. In fact it is a rare country where more women can read and write than men. It is poor.
