Why you would build Bentleys in Bratislava

If production is moved to Bratislava, the new Bentley 4X4 will be built alongside other cars belonging to the Volkswagen Group such as the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg.

Because they\’re all rather the same car.

Different bodywork, different trims, but underneath they are all built on exactly the same platform.

  1. I once was persuaded by a car rental booking site to upgrade to an “Audi A3 (or similar). I received a Skoda Octavia. I wasn’t all that pleased, but in a lot of ways it was very similar.

  2. I don’t know much about cars, still less about Bentleys or off road vehicles/SUVs, but isn’t an off road Bentley just wrong?

  3. Michael, The Octavia and the A3 are basically the same car – you pay a bit more for the Audi cachet…

As for the Bentley SUV, it’s bloody uglier than Arnald’s arse….

Lenin had a Rolls Royce Half-track which I think was built for the Tsar. I have always been fond of the idea and wouldn’t half mind one. I wonder if it would be road-legal?

  5. Johnnydub: Yes, that was my point. When I paid the extra, the website made it sound like I was paying extra for the Audi cachet. So hopefully “similar” would mean with a similar chached – so if I did not get an Audi, perhaps I might get a BMW.

But what I got was “similar” in a more literal sense.

There was nothing to complain about with respect to the quality of the car, though. It drove well, including at high speed. (I was in Germany).
