What? We can\’t call the Welsh sheepshaggers?

This is now racially aggravated something or other?

Anthony Taaffe had to be restrained and sat on by an off duty policeman and security staff at a holiday park in Wales after he was seen shouting and swearing while drunk, a court in Lladudno heard.

He then called the off duty policeman and security a staff “a bunch of sheep s******s.”

The court heard there were children present at the time at the holiday park in Gronant.

But Taaffe, of Bolton, told the court that he hadn’t been insulting Welsh people specifically and that instead he was using the words because it “is a term for people living in the countryside.”

The 47-year-old was fined £150 after he admitted racially aggravated disorderly behaviour.

He also admitted a second similar offence after he labelled a police officer at the custody unit he was taken to a “Welsh sheep s*****r.”

The drunk and shouting bit, sure, that\’s an offence. But sheepshaggers? Next they\’ll be telling us that we can\’t call Taffs thieves.

As to the police officer: I thought that had already been covered elsewhere. Custody officers are not shrinking violets and will have heard rather worse than that sent their way over the years. Precisely because they are custody officers they\’re rather harder to shock or insult than the average mortal.

Damn, it\’s getting to the stage where the only things we are allowed to say are those things that are unequivocably, provably, true. Politicians are cunts, that sort of thing.

  1. They do tend to be flirty with sheep. You could say that they are free with their favours.

    Flirty free, eh?

  2. “…he admitted racially aggravated…”

erm – just one tiny question – when did being Welsh make you a different race from, say, being English or Scottish?

  3. “..when did being Welsh make you a different race from, say, being English or Scottish?”
Do you know any English or Scots sheepshaggers?
But maybe the word we’re looking for is species rather than race.

Custody officers are not shrinking violets and will have heard rather worse than that sent their way over the years. Precisely because they are custody officers they’re rather harder to shock or insult than the average mortal.

But that is not a reason to allow people to insult policemen. Rather it is because they have no proper response that the law must step in. I can smack someone for calling me a sheep shagger. Not likely but possible. A policeman cannot. So having tied his hands, we then refuse to allow policemen any protection at all. The Courts do not protect policemen any more than they protect the rest of us. But they should.

Damn, it-s getting to the stage where the only things we are allowed to say are those things that are unequivocably, provably, true. Politicians are cunts, that sort of thing.

I disagree. It is getting so that the only things we are allowed to say are those things that are unequivocably, provably, false. Human beings are all equal. Multiculturalism works. The British Empire was a bad thing. And so on.

  5. “when did being Welsh make you a different race from, say, being English or Scottish?” It’s legit because “race” has been used by laymen in a variety of ways, from the all-encompassing Human Race, to the successively more detailed Aryan Race, Saxon Race …..

To Americans, of course, it historically referred essentially to white (“Caucasian”) contrasted to black (“African-American”, “Negro”). If you read American blogs you’ll see that this simple distinction sometimes so dominates their thinking that it often leaves them baffled when they need to refer to the swarthier white races of e.g. North Africa or the Near East. Or, indeed, of the Caucasus.

One consequence of having increasing numbers of Asians and Latin Americans in the USA will presumably be to add nuance to their vocabulary for discussing such stuff. Some of the nuance will, of course, involve potty classifications such as Hispanic. But when an American refers to a racial issue, it’ll almost always involve w vs b. One of the few cases I am familiar with where a little nuance is allowed to intrude on “racial issues” is in some of the early writing about the history of jazz, when a distinction was made between “creoles” and “blacks” in New Orleans, a distinction that apparently was a big deal at the time. Many later histories seem to suppress the distinction, presumably for reasons of modern politics.

  6. Bang goes the leisure centre joke, IE, What do you call a sheep tethered to a lamppost in Llandrindod Wells?

(It’s OK, you can laugh now. John Ap Rhys.)

  7. It become racist to call the Welsh sheep shagger when the word “racist” was redefined by the progressives to mean just about any group who is different from your group. So it can include differences in colour, ethnicity, nationality, background, and any other visual difference between humans that doesn’t include gender.

dearieme – “One of the few cases I am familiar with where a little nuance is allowed to intrude on [racial issues] is in some of the early writing about the history of jazz, when a distinction was made between [creoles] and [blacks] in New Orleans, a distinction that apparently was a big deal at the time.”

Many non-White communities may well utterly despise African Americans, but their younger generations go to University and suffer from ghetto-envy. So those younglings try to redefine themselves as “Black”. You see this in the Asian American community. With people of South Asian origin in the UK. Black has become a political not racial label.

But the distinction is very real, just rarely talked about. You can see this in the simple fact that apart from Obama (who had political reasons) no Black male in the US marries a woman with darker skin. At least not if he has options. As Spike Lee has pointed out. So it seems the US is more likely to move towards Brazil’s racial system – where the poorer you are, the more likely you are to be Black as wealthy people marry “up” to women of lighter skin.
