The St. George\’s flag and offending Muslims.

Calm down everyone. This is Radstock we\’re talking about.

My brother\’s just spent near a decade doing food and logisitics n\’stuff for the Americans in Afghanistan, including long spells in Helmland etc.

He once turned down the offer of a pub at peppercorn rent in Radstock. Too violent a place you see.

  1. If you wee so unbelievably butt ugly as Eleanor Jackson wouldn’t you be miserable, bitter and twisted too?

  2. I did enjoy this from the telegraph

Rizwan Ahmed, spokesman for the Bristol Muslim Cultural Society said: “I think they are going a bit far here.

“It is political correctness going a bit too far…In actual fact we are normal people. We have a sense of humour and have the same concerns as everyone else

If I were a mohammedan, I think I would get a bit fucked off by the hordes of bien pensant grauniad readers taking offence on my behalf. This chap seems merely to be bemused, but he’s probably nicer than me.

  3. Don’t be so hard on yourself, Sam, you’re a great bloke, unless you’re someone pretending to be Sam.

  4. Amusingly, the same person didn’t object to any possible offence caused to Muslims by the LGBT rainbow flag being flown on various dates. Absolutely barking mad, the lot of them.

  5. One could also point out that the crusades weren’t a conquest, but an attempt at a re-conquest. The areas affected had been Christian until conquered (at the point of the sword) a not all that long time before.

Well we have seen where that goes due to Pim Fontyn or whatever his name was in the Netherlands. It is a hard call when two protected groups fall out and start scratching at each other-s eyes. Be interesting to see where this pillock comes down.

In the meantime I am sure I could find a few people who are offended by the claim there is only one God. And a lot more than Muhammed is His prophet. So I suggest if they are offended, they stop first.

That depends what your idea of a long time is. The decisive victory of the Caliphate over the Byzantine Empire was shortly after the death of Muhammad, so about 350 years before the First Crusade.

Meanwhile, the Radstock thing is fuss about nothing. There was a town council meeting with an agendum to approve the purchase of a Union Flag and perhaps other flags for a newly repaired flagpole. The meeting looked at a list of flags, which included a flag of St George. One member said she thought that would be a bad idea because of its use as a symbol of the far right, and also made a stupid remark about possibly offending muslims. The rest of the meeting paid no attention to that and decided to buy the Union Flag as intended all along.

Then the local press published an account of the meeting using the stupid remark as an interesting angle. And parts of the national press and others in the political-correctness-gone-mad brigade picked up on it…

Osama Bin Laden was demanding Andalucia back and the last part of that was lost to the Muslim world in 1493. Say 520 years. And Spain did take Grenada back – some 700 years after they lost it.
