Which is always a good measure of an idea. If it stuffs HH then it\’s a good one. Yea even if it means stuff in the Biblical sense: might, momentarily, put a smile on the old sourpusses face.
Nearly all ministerial resignations are connected with not telling the truth: submitting false expenses, covering up a speeding points swap, receiving favours from lobbyists. But telling untruths about official figures is somehow regarded less seriously. Dilnot should have the power, in the worst examples, to require a full Commons censure debate on a minister\’s conduct – with an expectation that, if he or she failed to offer an adequate defence or show contrition, resignation would follow. That would guarantee press attention and ministerial trembling. Big lies about big numbers require big deterrents.
With HH, that would mean everything she has said about the gender pay gap, the nonsense she trotted out about prostitution and trafficking and so on. Would also, if extended to journalists, make something of a mockery of Polly\’s columns (the most egregious recently was her claim that Singapore is one of the most equal countries. Sigh.).
Then there\’s much of what comes from DECC of course. Would be most fun in fact. Although it would then destroy much of the purpose of this blog. Which I suppose you could argue would also be a benefit to humanity…….
