Timmy elsewhere

At the ASI.

Cheering news on African poverty. They’re no worse off than we were, than China was. Thus the situation is remediable, just as it was for us and China.

  1. But one thing we need to do is get the cultural imperialists of the Third Sector out of there. While you’ve got this stampede of middle class whites making a career out of limiting economic development to the pathetic “millennium goals”, we can’t expect rapid development.

A Green, “sustainable” Africa is a poor Africa, only just not-poor enough to avoid famine most of the time. That just is not good enough.

  2. So Much For Subtlety

But the problem is that Africans are Africans.

What has been interesting about the West has been how hard it has been for anyone else to copy our success. It should be easy, it should be cheap. All they have to do is look what we did and do it too. All have tried, all but the Japanese and some of their former colonies have failed.

Well, Singapore and Hong Kong apart.

The Japanese model seems to have failed in Japan and coming to that point in South Korea and Taiwan. China is doing well copying Hong Kong. But that is it.

There is absolutely no reason to think that Africa can copy us. None at all. I do not know why, but they have not been able to do it so far. Cultural practices are just too deeply rooted I think. Just as Jamaica and New Zealand are both British colonies, both islands, but only one of them looks anything like Britain.
