Wasn’t there a campaign about this?

Co-op Bank is suffering a customer exodus after a tawdry sex and drugs scandal and revelations about its parlous finances.

In a surprise statement to the stockmarket the bank admitted yesterday that there has been an increase in customers ditching their current accounts.

The self-proclaimed ‘ethical’ lender acknowledged ‘recent events may have caused some brand and reputational damage’.

I’m sure there was. Some sort of campaign to get people to move their accounts away from those horrible capitalist bastards, the major high street banks, and into nice cuddly mutuals or summat.

You know, nice cuddly mutuals like the Co Op?

  1. So Much For Subtlety

I am sure we will be hearing the Usual Suspects telling us any time now that anyone who moves their account from the Co-op is clearly a homophobic bigot.

But I wonder why anyone would bother. I am not sure that a coked up banker who parties with prostitutes, or even rent boys, is any better or worse than any other banker. What is the big deal? Moral outrage? So quaint and old fashioned! I suppose you could make a case that they are all p!ss poor judges of other human beings ….

  2. Having worked in the banking sector I can state you are constantly made aware of the various financial rules and regulations, and many of them cover “reputation risk” rather than illegal or fraudulent activities.

Obviously Rev Flowers didn’t get that memo.

Many a reputation has been sullied by a shredding incident the day before the auditors arrive even if the documents concerned were nothing to with the audit.

  3. Yes, it was called move your money campaign. Problem was that many of those who did so were actually a liability to their bank since they weren’t buying any financial products ie. they were simply having wages paid in, using ATMs to withdraw etc.

So in moving their money to *ethical* institutions, they were actually saving their former bastard capitalist ones money. 😉

In what universe is that a surprise?
