A little note to 10,000 Americans I’ve never met and never will

laneycarols

Well done to all 10,000 of you. A very good show there.

An eight-year-girl whose dying was wish to hear carolers serenading her with Christmas tunes passed away in the early hours of Boxing Day morning after attracting warmth and well-wishers from all across America.

On the Saturday before Christmas, some 10,000 people had spontaneously gathered beneath the window of Delaney Brown in the tiny of town West Reading, Pennsylvania to sing Christmas favourites, such Good King Wenceslas and Come All Ye Faithful.

I am a hopeless cynic but just occasionally something happens to make me think that it’s worth having humans around.

That is, just to note it, two and a half times the entire population of that small town of West Reading. Lashings of ginger beer all round I think and that isn’t something that is easy to deserve.

  1. While I’m a cynic with regard to politicians, greenies, pimps, real estate agents, the Welsh and celery (same IQ as aforementioned but fouler taste), I am generally an optimist as to the wonderful generosity and common decency of ordinary folk so this story doesn’t greatly surprise me. Who wouldn’t drive a few miles to make a dying little girl’s last hours a little happier?

  2. The very absence of Mr Wardman’s “counter-demonstration” by atheists rather undermines his intolerant prejudice against those who don’t share his religious beliefs.

“I am generally an optimist as to the wonderful generosity and common decency of ordinary folk”.

    Me too.

I could drone on with examples in my community here in Sussex but I should let the lovely report stand on its own.

@James. Pull your head in and give it a shake.

DocBud – “Who wouldn’t drive a few miles to make a dying little girl’s last hours a little happier?”

I don’t like to be miserable at this time of year, but really you can’t believe that can you? Because the answer is surely everybody.

    Except those doing it.

The rest of the world is simply proof of Robert Putnam’s claim that racial and ethnic diversity destroys social capital. In societies with a high degree of social diversity, this sort of thing does not happen. I mean, seriously, can you see the Egyptian public doing this? The Italian – as nice as they are in many other ways? The Nigerians? Basically if armies regularly pass through your territory raping all and sundry, you don’t give a damn about dying girls.

This is a specifically American (perhaps to a lesser extent, Northern European) event. And specifically North-Eastern. By which I mean White. More or less Anglo-Saxon or their near relatives. Protestant. Look at the photo. You would see more racial diversity at a Ku Klux Klan rally. If you list all the nations where this is remotely plausible you will see my point. Sweden may be socialist but they might do it. Hong Kong is capitalist but they wouldn’t.

This is just a measure of the Britain we have lost. A country that used to be coherent with high social capital. But chose instead to be Lebanon.

Given that neither of us have a prejudiced intolerence of those who don’t share our view, religious or otherwise, (your intolerence of idiots is noted) I would like to extend an invitation to a carol service in my parish church on Sunday evening. The choir is enjoying critical acclaim at the moment, so it should be great.

  6. Tsk. Sounds dangerous to me. Were the council informed? Who filled out the risk assessment forms? What about insurance? An impromptu gathering like this, somebody could have been hurt. Better to let the state take care of this sort of thing. Ban it, I say.

  7. @Ironman, I’d be delighted though location may force me to decline. Seems the militant atheibots are indeed as mythical as some other mythical beings.
