The Left in the UK don’t want to actually solve the problem. They’d lose voters, given as people become less dependent on the state, they are less likely to vote for them. They just want to be seen to be doing something *perceived* as progressive, but which is actually at best ineffective and at worst counter-productive, hence locking in their support.
