Difficult to tell

The civil rights activist who was “outed” as white after years of presenting herself professionally and socially as a black woman has called into question her parentage, saying she has no proof that her white mother and father are her biological parents.

Is this just blowin’ smoke and desperately inventing whatever? Or an actual delusion?

Has anyone suggested she try for the US presidential nomination? Sounds like she’d be a shoo-in.

I denounce you! Racists! Thick.Racist.Pricks, to be specific.

And all this time, they were just #WrongSkin

  11. I feel quite sorry for Dolezal, who is clearly disturbed. But say what you like about her response, delusional though she is, she’s still responding to things that have actually been said. Unlike Interested, whose tiresome obsession with Ironman has progressed to screeching at him when he is not there.

  12. This little skirmish in the culture wars is getting far more play than it deserves, surely?

Was she doing a good job at NAACP? Do they have good performance metrics to be able to tell? Do you have to be black to work there? Do you have to be under age to work at Save the Children?

  13. bloke in france – Was she doing a good job at NAACP?

She appears to have busied herself manufacturing a number of fake “hate crimes”, because those dang lazy white men weren’t committing any real “hate crimes” in her neighbourhood.

    So… yes?

  14. Every time I hear this woman’s name mentioned, I flash on that scene from ‘The Commitments’ where the pasty-faced Oirish teen is exhorting his equally pasty-faced group ‘Say it loud! O’im black and o’im proud!’

For me it’s the classic NTNOCN “stout” sketch.
When Rowan Atkinson says “So you have to be fat now to be stout?”

    Leading inevitably to

“So you have to have a front bottom now to be a woman?”

“So you have to have dark skin now to be black?”

  17. Dolezal is a member of a type known, unaffectionately, as ‘wiggers.’ Whites ‘identifying,’ as Ms Dolezal puts it, as black. They aren’t rare here in the U.S.

What I find striking is her eye color – NFW is she black. You have to be willfully blind to not notice.

  18. I’m with Roue Le Jour here, I reckon the parents have a great deal of responsibility for this young lady’s mental problems. I have a bit of experience of the evangelical Christian types (having grown in an evangelical Christian family, and met lots of missionary and evangelical preachers) that they appear to be (missionaries to Africa etc) and in my experience these sort of parents can produce some right f*cked up kids, particularly if the children refuse to toe the religious line of the parents. Not all of course, I’ve met a lot of very genuine decent Christian folk too, but there’s definitely a type in that evangelical category that are capable of writing off their own flesh and blood because they are ‘in league with the Devil’, as they would see it.

Its pure speculation on my part, but I can really see that there are a type of people would quite happily bin off their daughter and replace her with some nice religiously compliant African orphans if the daughter was proving to be a troublesome teen who wouldn’t agree with their religious views. Its interesting that at least one of the orphans lives/lived with Dolezal rather than his adoptive parents – quite possibly because he fell foul of the same religious hardline.

  19. > You have to be willfully blind to not notice.

Or just go through life without assuming everyone else is a spy. I would have just thought, “Oh, what an unusual eye colour for that skin tone.” I wouldn’t think, “Aha! An imposter!” Who does?

The fascinating thing was Dolezal’s advice to black people about how to go and see 12 Years A Slave, which was all about avoiding having all the white people in the cinema staring at you to see how you react — which made it clear that that is how she sees other people: constantly watching them and their reactions, in case they’re spies.

  20. Employee has faked her c.v.
    Shitstorm happens.

Truly, the silly season is starting early this year. Must be due to CAGW.

  21. Jim –

The backstory is actually quite sad (well, all of it is in different ways). This whole thing came out when her mother went to the press about her. This happened after her brother was arrested for kiddy-fiddling with a black child (under-age, anyway). The child’s side was taken by Rachel Dolezal herself as part of her job. I don’t think it’s ever been said by any involved that that taking side prompted the mother’s approach to the press, but it just seems too likely…

  22. S2: or no one cared that she’s not black. I’m not sure the racists at NAACP cared, either. She wasn’t fired, she quit. That she wasn’t fired makes me think better of NAACP.

  23. Rachel is getting rather a battering here in the US.

The first picture I saw very clearly showed a WAG who had spent too long in tanning salons (but would be going back).

In others, she could be black, or at least a mixture.

    Baffling.

  24. Alexei Sayle had it right 30 years ago:
“They’re all weekend white Rastafarians, yeah? Living On The Frontline in Hemel Hempstead”

  25. Gamecock,

    > That she wasn’t fired makes me think better of NAACP.

Yeah, they seem to have decided to care about nothing but the quality of her work, which was apparently very good. I couldn’t care less what she does to her skin and hair, but she also claimed black and Native American heritage on some application form or other (not her job app for the NAACP), went to the trouble of finding a black man to pretend to be her father in photos, and posted selfies of her heavily made-up self with her died and curled hair, captioning them “the natural look”. I’d have a lot more respect for her if she’d said, “You know what? I just think darker skin and black curly hair suit me better. I like the way black people look, so am going to look like that. If black people can straighten their hair, why not?” Instead, she’s done a lot of lying. And I think the lying would have made her position at the NAACP untenable sooner or later, and they would have realised that.

  26. Transgender is ok in SJW circles. Have the operations, take the hormones and you’ll have successfully changed your gender and have the right to be treated as whatever gender you chose.

Is being black person trapped in a white body also a ‘condition’? Should someone who changes their skin colour or other racial characteristics be considered to have switched race?

  27. Yeah, they seem to have decided to care about nothing but the quality of her work, which was apparently very good.

    Indeed, she was quite industrious:

Miss Dolezal also complained to the police of being the victim of hate crimes by white racists, who she said had even left a noose in her garage.

She might yet also face trouble from police, who have dropped investigations into all nine of the alleged race hate crimes she suffered amid allegations she invented them.

I’m sure we’ve all spread blood libels once or twice, but Miss Dolezal did it at least nine times.

  28. So, “white racists” are now gone by after Caucasians with an annual subscription to the local tanning salon. Dem stoopid white racists, there!

  29. To be fair, it’s not as if racist thugs do a DNA test, is it? They just attack people who look like the kind of people they want to attack.

Are her complaints now alleged to be made-up because we now know she was pretending to be black? Or is that allegation a separate thing? If someone’s saying, “She wasn’t really black, therefore she can’t really have been a victim of racists,” that’s shite logic.

Interesting legal problem for the justice system, isn’t it? If someone commits a race hate crime but then it turns out their victim was only pretending to be the target race, is it still a race hate crime? Surely the crime and the motive were still the same. But the statute might well contain clauses regarding the victim’s actual, rather than purported, race.

  30. S2 – Nah, her hate crimes allegations were already being treated with suspicion before it turned out she’s no blacker than Al Jolson:

[Human Rights Education Institute board member Karl] Neumaier said he was suspicious of several incidents Dolezal reported in Coeur d’Alene, including her discovery of a swastika on the door of the Human Rights Education Institute when the organization’s security camera was “mysteriously turned off.”

“None of them passed the smell test … In all of these incidents (she reported in Coeur d’Alene), she was the sole witness to events that, when put under scrutiny, don’t hold up,” he said.

    And:

A police report raises questions about reports of threatening hate mail sent to Spokane’s NAACP president. Major Crimes detectives have concluded that the mail was never processed, despite showing up in the organization’s post office box.

Rachel Dolezal, president of Spokane’s NAACP chapter, said she found an envelope containing threatening mail in the post office box on North Monroe in February. […]

Postal workers told detectives the envelope had not been canceled, time stamped or imprinted with the bar code that directs mail to the right destination. According to the police report, the postal inspector told detectives, “The only way this letter could have ended up in this P.O. box would be if it was placed there by someone with a key to that box or a USPS employee.”

Police then interviewed the three postal employees who put mail in post office boxes and none of them remember seeing the envelope. They all said they’ve never seen mail end up in a box without the barcode. All three said, at the very least, they would have canceled the stamps.

The detective wrote, “I have no reason to believe any of these employees were involved in putting the letters in this post office box.”

Fake white-on-black hate crimes in the US outnumber real incidents by a considerable margin. The accusers are usually women, which indicates a desire for sympathy and attention is a motivating factor.

With the long history of fake hate crimes reported by the likes of Tawana Brawley and Crystal Mangum, inventing imaginary white devils is practically an American tradition now. The phenomenon deserves its own commemorative stamp and tastefully designed Franklin Mint plates.

  31. “Fake white-on-black hate crimes in the US outnumber real incidents by a considerable margin.” – Steve

The one that cracks me up is the ignorant ( perhaps racist) blacks around here who spray paint swastikas on their churches and burn them down.

Fire investigators know that 85% of arsons involve the property owners. So when the cops get to the scene, and find evidence of arson, they instantly suspect the church owners, swastikas be damned. A little investigation into the church’s finances is usually all it takes then to convict the church members.

But as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, it’s going to be done again soon.

  32. Gamecock – some of my favourites:

Nobody expects the Bias Incident Response Team
Last fall Vassar College was struck by a string of hateful remarks spray-painted on student residences, including “Fuck N*ggers” and “Hey Tranny, Know Your Place.” A few days after the university’s Bias Incident Response Team reported that multiple offenses had occurred on campus, the university announced that the perpetrators were actually two members of the Bias Incident Response Team.

    Spelling Boo-boo
It began on a Wednesday when a group of students found a bunch of rubber bands tied together. Some people said the rubber bands looked like they formed the shape of a noose. The next morning, Aubriana Banks received a second “noose” made of plastic string. Later that night, students came across fliers that said, “N——rs will die in 2 days. No n——rs wanted.” At the bottoms of the fliers, the perpetrator had written 13 names of black students.

It ended up being Khalilah Ford, a black student, who created the list.

How did the detectives realize Ford was behind the hoax? Her name was the only name correctly spelled on the list.

    “Mein Fuhrer… I can walk!”
Azalea Cooley was a disabled black lesbian suffering from brain cancer, and she claimed to be a victim of a rash of harassment. Someone painted a swastika on her house along with the phrase, “Burn, N——r, Burn.” Later, there were more painted swastikas, demeaning letters, burning crosses, and even a black baby doll with a .38-caliber bullet lodged in it. Because of the extreme nature of the harassment, multiple community activists and the police jumped to Cooley’s defense.

In September, the harassment continued, and the community activists still rallied around Cooley; they had hosted multiple vigils throughout the summer. The police, however, became suspicious about the attacks. Without telling the police chief, investigators set up a hidden camera to see who was continually trespassing on the residence to intimidate Cooley. The footage showed Cooley walking past her wheelchair to plant a cross on the lawn to light. When the police showed her the evidence, she slit her wrists. In the hospital, she admitted that not only had she committed the hate crimes, but she also revealed she was neither disabled nor suffering from cancer.

  33. “How did the detectives realize Ford was behind the hoax? Her name was the only name correctly spelled on the list.”

    Holy shit, that’s a classic…..

  34. @steve Fake white-on-black hate crimes in the US outnumber real incidents by a considerable margin

U r a great blogger, but i’d like to see some evidence of that.

It remains true that black people get the thin end of most of what’s on offer.

  35. So Much for Subtlety

Squander Two – “I feel quite sorry for Dolezal, who is clearly disturbed.”

That is undoubtedly true. She looks more deluded than malicious. The question is what lead her to this point.

“But say what you like about her response, delusional though she is, she’s still responding to things that have actually been said.”

Has she? It looks to me like her responses have some connection to what is being said, but she is not actually listening, understanding and processing what is being said.

“Unlike Interested, whose tiresome obsession with Ironman has progressed to screeching at him when he is not there.”

And we are all very grateful to Interested for it. Sometimes Tiger Repelling Rocks really do work to repel Tigers. Whatever he is doing is producing an absence of note.

  36. So Much for Subtlety

johnny bonk – “It remains true that black people get the thin end of most of what’s on offer.”

Do they? Offered by whom precisely? I would think that Blacks do get the thin end of most of life but that is because they refuse to take advantage of all the opportunities on offer. It is not that Whites are holding them back, or even actually discriminating against them in any meaningful way. It is that most do not want to “act White”. There is a want to be authentically Black. It is very sad that so many of them interpret that to mean choosing failure nine times out of ten. No one is forcing anyone to have twelve children by ten Baby Mommas.

  37. Johnnydub – and the best part?

    This was at a university.

    Erasmus wept.

    johnny bonk – U r a great blogger

    Thank you.

but i’d like to see some evidence of that

I’d like to see cold, hard statistics, but as far as I’m aware there aren’t any. “Fake hate crimes” isn’t a category in the FBI’s stats.

That’s understandable: the FBI is more interested in collating numbers on murders, rapes and so on. They categorise “hate crimes”, but not “hate crime allegations that turn out to be bullshit”.

And tellingly – despite the noise made on university campuses about “hate crimes” and the many, many incidents reported every year that turn out to be hoaxes (especially on campus) – there also seems to be a curious lack of academic interest in actually researching the subject in a rigorous and non-partisan manner.

The only “academic” research into the subject is partis pris guff of the sort that leads to absurd claims like US colleges having a worse rape climate than Soweto.

So why do I believe there are more fake white-on-black hate crimes than real ones in America?

Simple: inference from reading news reports.

The US media is obsessed with race. A white-on-black crime story is automatically huge news in the States, with the racial angle prominently displayed.

So… where are all the horrible true stories of evil hatey white men doing evil hatey things?

    They’re remarkably hard to find.

The most publicised white-on-black American “hate crime” of the past decade was the murder of Trayvon Martin.

Only it turned out not to be a murder, and the accused wasn’t a white man.

Then there is the sad story of gentle giant Michael Brown, coldly executed – while he had his hands in the air and was trying to surrender, no less – by a white policeman who gunned him down just because he was black.

Except Michael Brown, it turns out, was a thug who had just robbed a convenience store, was on drugs, didn’t have his hands up, didn’t offer to surrender, and foolishly tried to first beat up and then wrestle a loaded gun off a cop.

And for every one of these undoubtedly sad but also hideously mis-reported incidents – because the first instinct of the American media in each case is to present the story as white bad, black good until overwhelming evidence forces them to move on – there are literally dozens of faintly comical ones like those above of out-and-out hate crime hoaxes.

Where is the great white defendant? Alas, they still haven’t found him. He’s more elusive than the Scarlet Pimpernel riding Shergar through the mists of Brigadoon.

It remains true that black people get the thin end of most of what’s on offer.

    They do and they don’t.

Black people in the US are more likely to be born into poverty than other races. But equally, nobody’s stopping a black man from making a success of himself in America just because he’s a black man.

So a black person in America can become a billionaire media mogul like Oprah, a global movie megastar like Will Smith, a fabulously rich music industry legend like Jay Z or Beyonce, a multi-millionaire sports icon like LeBron James, a famous intellectual like Thomas Sowell, a Supreme Court judge like Clarence Thomas, a celebrated scientist like Neil deGrasse Tyson, or President of the United States.

Is there racism in America? Of course. But there’s more opportunity.

  38. So Much for Subtlety

Incidentally, she has a sex tape. I think we need someone to take one for the team and watch it.

    Any volunteers?

  39. So Much for Subtlety

Steve – “Is there racism in America? Of course. But there’s more opportunity.”

To support what you have said, does anyone here actually know a racist in a position of any authority? All my life I have been surrounded by people who are pathetically eager to help and encourage BMEs. Who always assume the White person is in the wrong and that the BME is the victim. Who always spare no time and effort to help BMEs if they struggle. Who feel guilty about racism.

We are constantly told that we are all surrounded, tainted, by racism and yet the evidence of it is remarkably weak. When was the last time you saw someone being adversely impacted, so to speak, by racism?

  40. SMFS – When was the last time you saw someone being adversely impacted, so to speak, by racism?

In the UK corporate world, I’ve never come across it. And we do get the odd HR complaint – but I’ve never seen one about racism. Girls complaining about their treatment at the hands of other women – yes. Drunken altercations at Christmas parties – of course. Racism, no.

We have people from all over the world working for us. We want to keep good employees, and we don’t give a shit what colour or religion they are. It really is hard to find good, consistent workers who don’t throw lots of sickies or fiddle their expenses or immediately swan off to the competition as soon as there’s an extra fiver on the table.

Some of our most reliable, consistent, good-natured and hardworking staff are Asian or African immigrants.

  41. F*ck me, this story just keeps giving. There’s a alleged sex tape, and an actual (not adopted) brother who is being prosecuted for sexually assaulting one of the adopted African orphans. Well that explains why the parents are so keen on throwing Rachel under the bus of the worlds media, to try and paint the allegations of sexual abuse as the ravings of a fantasist.

This is one f*cked up family!!! I’m sticking with my first thought – the whole thing is the result of the practical application of some good old hardline US evangelical Christian religious dogma. The whole Duggar family thing going on shows that such things aren’t unknown.

  42. So Much for Subtlety

Jim – “I’m sticking with my first thought – the whole thing is the result of the practical application of some good old hardline US evangelical Christian religious dogma. The whole Duggar family thing going on shows that such things aren’t unknown.”

Evangelicals just can’t win can they? Usually the likes of BiG and Ironman accuse them of racism. If they go out of their way to be nice to Africans, volunteering to serve in Africa, adopting African children, they are still at fault.

It would be simpler and probably more true to say that crazy tends to run in families. They f**k you up, I am told.

  43. So Much for Subtlety

Gamecock – “What I find striking is her eye color – NFW is she black. You have to be willfully blind to not notice.”

You do you mean? You need to have dark eyes to be Black? Why can’t a BME have green eyes? I mean if they can’t, that is pretty much the entire plot of Big Trouble in Little China out the window.

And we know what sticklers for racial accuracy Hollywood is.

  44. Gamecock – “What I find striking is her eye color – NFW is she black. You have to be willfully blind to not notice.”

    Ahem.

  45. “Evangelicals just can’t win can they? Usually the likes of BiG and Ironman accuse them of racism. If they go out of their way to be nice to Africans, volunteering to serve in Africa, adopting African children, they are still at fault.”

Its nothing to do with race per se, and has everything to do with the hardline imposition of religious views, and the way the evangelicals see everything in black and white (no pun intended!). You are either for us or against us, you are either saved or the spawn of the Satan, regardless of who you are, family or not.

There is a certain type of person, inevitably male, who is very attracted to evangelical Christianity, very controlling men find such an environment the perfect home for their personal predilections. One of the tenets of evangelical living is that the man is the head of the household and his word is law. This means when someone (possibly in this case a teenage Rachel Dolezal) defies his control, things can get very nasty very quickly. I have personally seen how so-called Christian folk can behave towards members of their own family in such circumstances. They of course consider they are doing Gods work, so its all totally justified.

My guess (and thats all it is) is that a young misbehaving Rachel Dolezal was constantly given her adoptive siblings as examples of how ‘good Christian children’ should behave though out her formative years. When you’ve been told ‘Why can’t you be more like your younger brothers and sisters?’ for the millionth time, one suspects it begins to have a psychological effect, especially when allied to all the guilt that such parents are quite adept at laying on too.

  46. …where are all the horrible true stories of evil hatey white men doing evil hatey things?
    They’re remarkably hard to find.

    Not right now, apparently.

…these undoubtedly sad but also hideously mis-reported incidents…
Fortunately for the police, nowadays there’s often video evidence. Here‘s a video of a policeman defending himself from attack by a man he suspected of having a faulty tail light.

When was the last time you saw someone being adversely impacted, so to speak, by racism?
Overt racism isn’t usually public any more. But, to answer your question: at football matches. Serbia v England Under-21 a couple of years ago was particularly nasty.

Black people in the US are more likely to be born into poverty than other races. But equally, nobody’s stopping a black man from making a success of himself in America just because he’s a black man.
That’s true – three cheers for the Civil Rights Act. But it’s so much harder if you start from the bottom – what would GW Bush or Al Gore Jr have achieved if they’d chosen their parents less fortunately?

  47. “It remains true that black people get the thin end of most of what’s on offer.”

As Dr. Martin Luther King said, Negros (sic) are just people.

Blacks go through life as individuals. Libtards want to treat them as a group.

  48. So Much for Subtlety

Social Justice Warrior – “Not right now, apparently.”

We will have to see. No matter how you decide to exploit this incident, these sorts of things are extremely rare. Whole years go by without one taking place. In the meantime, some 300 White women are raped every day by Black men – often with explicitly racist agendas. Perhaps more than that are raped in prison. Yet there is no violence in response.

“Fortunately for the police, nowadays there’s often video evidence. Here‘s a video of a policeman defending himself from attack by a man he suspected of having a faulty tail light.”

A policeman beating up a suspect is not necessarily about race. After all, Detroit has a much worse police brutality record now it is run by Blacks with a mostly Black police force than it had back in the day under The Man. On average police are more likely to shoot Whites in gun confrontations.

“Overt racism isn’t usually public any more. But, to answer your question: at football matches. Serbia v England Under-21 a couple of years ago was particularly nasty.”

That does not answer my question because you have no evidence of any adverse impact. Rather it looks like small children acting out.

“That’s true – three cheers for the Civil Rights Act.”

Nothing to do with the Civil Rights Act.

“But it’s so much harder if you start from the bottom – what would GW Bush or Al Gore Jr have achieved if they’d chosen their parents less fortunately?”

That is an interesting question. What is also an interesting question is what G. W. Bush and Al Gore left as a legacy for their own children. Are their children likely to do better because Bush remained married? Because he made them do their homework?

Bush’s children benefit from being Bushes, but the Bushes make them Bushes.

  49. SJW – Not right now, apparently.

We’ll see. So far the only evidence that the SC shooting was a “hate crime” is that the suspect is white.

Of course, it might turn out that he was motivated by hatred of blacks, rather than hatred of Christians or some personal vendetta against one or more people in the congregation.

But it’s so much harder if you start from the bottom – what would GW Bush or Al Gore Jr have achieved if they’d chosen their parents less fortunately?

Or Obama or Ed Miliband or Polly Toynbee…

Sure. But so what? Life is a lottery. The world doesn’t owe us anything. We’re lucky not to have been born in some poverty-stricken village in Africa.

  50. “Of course, it might turn out that he was motivated by hatred of blacks, rather than hatred of Christians or some personal vendetta against one or more people in the congregation.”

Murder is irrational behavior. People will try to attach some meaning to the murderer’s irrationality. It is a fallacy. And a business.

  51. Jim:
“One of the tenets of evangelical living is that the man is the head of the household and his word is law.”

Actually, this is straightforward Christianity; the Evangelicals are simply true believers.

Mainstream European Christianity is watered down to a really quite astonishing degree.

  52. So Much for Subtlety

Jim – “Its nothing to do with race per se, and has everything to do with the hardline imposition of religious views, and the way the evangelicals see everything in black and white (no pun intended!). You are either for us or against us, you are either saved or the spawn of the Satan, regardless of who you are, family or not.”

It is amazing how far some people can go with the arm chair psychobabble when all they know about Evangelicals seems to come from the TV set. Even if any of that was true of Evangelicals in general, and I doubt it, how much of that was true of this family? People who volunteer to work in Africa are unlikely to be thinking in simplistic Black and White terms – or insist on rigid control of their lives as that is a little hard to come by in Africa.

“One of the tenets of evangelical living is that the man is the head of the household and his word is law.”

Vatican I said that a woman was not allowed to leave the home without permission of her husband. Even to go shopping.

“They of course consider they are doing Gods work, so its all totally justified.”

Says the CCN version of Christianity.

“My guess (and thats all it is) is that a young misbehaving Rachel Dolezal was constantly given her adoptive siblings as examples of how ‘good Christian children’ should behave though out her formative years.”

So you are assuming the adopted African children are the well behaved ones? My guess would be that Rachel continually behaved properly but yet her parents spent a lot more time on the Special Needs adoptees. So she got the wrong message – loud and clear.

  53. “It is amazing how far some people can go with the arm chair psychobabble when all they know about Evangelicals seems to come from the TV set.”

I grew up in an evangelical christian household. My sister attended an evangelical christian school (I escaped being older and such things didn’t exist when I was of school age). I know many people who home school their children. I have personally known many evangelical ministers, missionaries and church members, and heard about all the shenanigans that have gone on in such families. I know the public face, and I also know what goes on underneath. It ain’t always pretty.
