Cory Wells, who has died aged 74, was a founding member of the band Three Dog Night, who had a worldwide hit with their 1970 cover of Randy Newman’s Mama Told Me (Not to Come); in later life he became a renowned fishing correspondent.
Blinder of a version of that song though.
The English have long expressed a preference for killing foxes from horseback if they are upper class, or torturing fish with hooks (the type of fish depending on class) if they can afford to do so.
It doesn’t surprise me that a musician who has made some money would spend so much time done one or the other that they would become a correspondent. The key point being that there are so many people willing to do it that I doubt it pays in any meaningful sense.
In the case of fishing the only thing to be grateful for is that they were never able to televise it. Unlike the equally boring and pointless horse-racing (betting aside–and how many made any money at that?) that used to be the ultimate torment of Grandstand/World of (boring) Sport on Saturday afternoons of old. Until the wrestling arrived –even comedy violence was a welcome change from the crapola that is labelled “sport”.
In the case of fishing the only thing to be grateful for is that they were never able to televise it.
In Australia and Russia they do. In Australia, one of the most popular shows is fronted by Andrew Ettingshausen, a rugby league legend.
Do they not do angling programmes on Brit TV, now? When did that stop? Shame.
Got to be more interesting, watching a bloke staring at a motionless carp float, for 3 hours, whilst a fondling handful of maggots than f***ing Strictly.
In my opinion fishing is like sex because it’s participatory activity rather than an activity you watch
Before you ask I spend more time on the former than latter activity
“fishing is like sex because it’s participatory activity rather than an activity you watch”
Dumbstruck!
Angling pr0n? Big anglingpr0n industry, is there? The mind boggles.
“Before you ask I spend more time on the former than latter activity”
That’s entirely believable.
bloke in spain – “Angling pr0n? Big anglingpr0n industry, is there? The mind boggles.”
We have been here with Troy McClure, surely? He, after all, sleeps with the fishes.
Since Three Dog Night were an American band, SMFS’s comment about the English fondness for huntin’ and fishin’ is pretty much irrelevant.
And Mr Ecks is severely out of touch with modern British telly if he thinks fishing is not broadcast-able. Has he not heard of Robson Green?
Anyway, the best track Three Dog Night ever did is Shambala.
Dig all that layer-cut hair. And oh, dear God, those trousers. You can practically tell their religion. It’s a wonder any guy in the ’70s ever managed to reproduce.
