Idiot scaremongering

The UK will find it harder to keep terrorists out of the country and to deport them after arrest if it leaves the European Union, the former chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland says.

If we leave then we get to write the rules about how we do that. Why would we write rules for ourselves that make those things more difficult?

  1. He might be referring to the fact that before the EU we were unable to stop terrorists from a country wandering willy-nilly over the border into Northern Ireland. Although why he thinks the EU made this easier I don’t know, unless he thinks the EU hosing money at Ireland made the terrorists quit bombing and go instead into property speculation.

  2. In the article he presupposes the UK steps aside from EU intelligence sharing.

If the UK is not in Europol (and why leave if it suits all sides for the UK to remain) then why not share intelligence under the aegis of Interpol?

As always with a scare like this one, the question has to be: what is the EU funding that the writer has an interest in? There seems to be a pervasive web of propaganda and corruption surrounding the EU.

Steve – “When we leave the EU we will no longer be able to stop terrorists, global warming, and Cthulhu.”

At this point I am an optimist. I am hoping for Cthulhu.

  4. ‘The UK will find it harder to keep terrorists out of the country and to deport them after arrest’

Is terrorism a misdemeanor over there? Deportation seems a casual response.

  5. I read this earlier and was amazed by the utter bollocks. We share inteligence with Saudi Arabia for fucks sake.

“As always with a scare like this one, the question has to be: what is the EU funding that the writer has an interest in?”

I can only find that he’s a member of Common Purpose, a secretive group given an office in a governmental department by David Blunkett. From what I gather its a European venture. Oh and you’ll be surprised to learn all his previous predictions have ended up as complete BS.

  7. And if we left the EU, we could still (if we wanted to, but heaven alone knows why we would) join Schengen, just like Switzerland.

As TimN points out above, Schengen is simply the recognition of the reality that it’s almost* impossible to close a land border to prevent small groups of bad people being able to cross it.

    * WW1 was quite effective, the Soviet Block managed it at the 99% level, and the Israelis are currently giving it a damn good try. But no-one’s seriously proposing any such solution within continental Europe.

  8. “Why would we write rules for ourselves that make those things more difficult?”

Because he’s afraid that if you leave the EU you guys might remember that you’re a free people and might start holding your government accountable again and (horror!) start limiting the whims of senior apparatchiks?

Dongguan John – “I read this earlier and was amazed by the utter bollocks. We share inteligence with Saudi Arabia for fucks sake.”

Well, “share”. They would have to have some to start with. We may provide them with intelligence but I expect all they do with it is torture anyone who gives us any.

    Steve – “I don’t like Cthulhu’s people-devouring policy. But I do like his EU-devouring policy.”

Well, you know, I am relaxed about his people-devouring policy these days. I am more concerned about the effects of releasing unspeakable (and come to think of it, black) demons from another dimension on the local biosphere. I mean, what if they eat some condors?

  10. there are times when I speculate that a zero-base approach to government and the law might be a good thing. meanwhil I go with Steve and suggest we should outsource it, in the true spirit of neo-liberal globalisation, to Cthulhu

  11. Quite staggering bare-faced bollocks here. It’s EU laws that prevent us from deporting people. A country run by genocidal murderers sends one of its bastards to the UK to spread their message of genocidal murder, and the EU rule we can’t send the bastard back to his country because it’s run by genocidal murderers and might be dangerous for the poor dear.

    Chris,

    > no-one’s seriously proposing any such solution within continental Europe.

    Until a few weeks ago.

  12. Senior plod spend so much time being kow-towed to by morons (junior plod) that they forget that they are more stupid than the average.
