Looks like Mormonism is growing up as a religion

Members of the Church of Latter Day Saints are planning a “mass resignation” in Salt Lake City on Saturday in response to a leaked church policy that punishes the children of same-sex couples who don’t renounce their parents’ relationship.

The event, which is expected to draw close to 1,000 people, seems unprecedented in the church’s 185-year history, according to several experts.

Their first schism.

Wouldn’t any parent be proud at such a demonstration of maturity?

  1. They’re tearing themselves apart over a question of how many angels can dance on a pinhead. How many children of same-sex couples can there be in the LDS?

  2. I thought they’d had schisms ages ago – didn’t a fundamentalist group split off, still practising polygamy, when the main group banned it? That was late 19th or early 20th century but it’s still going.

Think there have also been liberal break-away groups before, but they don’t seem to have as much success as the fundamentalists.

  3. Jeez, Mormons have had schisms right from the outset: it’s the downside to allowing each adherent to have their own revelations directly, instead of requiring them to be passed through some sort of humanly conduit.

  4. children of same-sex couples who don’t renounce their parents’ relationship

I hear Mormons believe some odd things, but I’d have thought they already understood where babies come from.

  5. There’s an old Dutch saying that goes (roughly):
Wherever three Dutchmen are gathered together, they will found a church. If a fourth Dutchman joins them, they will have a schism.

  6. We must all pray that someday the Roman Catholic Church admits the errors of its way and rejoins orthodox Christianity.

  7. @dearieme,

Which raises the interesting question of which of the dozens of national (and largely nationalist) variants of orthodox Christianity the church of Rome would apply to rejoin.

  8. It will wait until the Copts are annihilated and then join them – no dilution of control and it won’t take long.

  9. “which of the dozens of national … variants of orthodox Christianity the church of Rome would apply to rejoin.” With any luck there will be a little orthodox sect somewhere in Italy that it could be absorbed by. Which failing, it could join the Russian Orthodox variant: it’s used to close relations with …. oh, oh, I almost mentioned Communists and Nazis there.

  10. There are literally dozens of different Mormon sects, all claiming to be the One True Faith.
The ‘mainstream’ (Utah) branch of the LDS formally renounced polygamy so Utah could be admitted as a state, in 1896.

No they aren’t because this is entryism. The radicals hope to slowly boil the frog, and step by step force the LDS to accept Gay marriage. They are simply exploiting the children of these non-existent single sex couples as the thin edge of the wedge because it makes the Church look bad. But the inevitable aim is the same.

It is better to fight early than fight late.
