Proof of Baumol’s Cost Disease

While a Sunday school teacher in his late teens and a disc jockey for a show on local radio playing hymns, Saturday afternoons would find him visiting ‘Kate Nelson’s whorehouse’ in Florence, Alabama, where he would get a discount on the usual $2 fee.

….

With no other source of income than his little studio, and with a family to support, Phillips was heading towards bankruptcy when, in 1953, an 18-year-old local white boy walked in and paid $4 to make a private recording.

The manufactured good of a recording demo is now considerably cheaper than the pure service of a paid quickie.

  1. This is why men should support sex-positive feminism. It’ll increase the supply of nookie and therefore reduce the cost.

So, about £75-100. Assuming you’ve already got a PC, you can pick up a midi slave keyboard, music software and a microphone and have your own mini studio (that’s more sophisticated than the one Elvis was in) for less than a threesome.

Just to add: at these prices, I’m not sure there’s been any inflation in paid sex in about 25 years.

I blame enslaved Vietnamese nail artists.

  4. Studio hire rates are insanely low, in my considered opinion.

    Typical example: http://www.factorystreet.co.uk/recording-studio/
Recording and mixing is £27 per hour inc vat, engineer, tea and coffee.

I suppose there are a lot of people who fancy owning a studio (like all those who fancy owning a pub), which pushes supply higher than it would otherwise be.

  5. Wow. I was going to compare making a recording by yourself in your bedroom to satisfying your other needs by yourself in your bedroom; but professional assistance in the one activity seems four times as expensive as in the other.

  6. So Much For Subtlety: based on some of the people on Adultwork, it’s East Europeans coming over ‘ere, taking our (blow)jobs. There’s also the thing that a lot of girls are working at home, using cellphones and places like AW rather than needing a massage parlour. So, the rent they used to have to pay isn’t being added on like it was.

  7. Good to see disruptive technology once again pushing down the overheads and prices of services allow small independent providers to flourish and compete with larger organisations

Naah, I think I am going to have to go with the nail salon slave thing. In fact I find this blatant nail salon slavery denial very worrying. Is there a hot line I can ring to report such shameless denial to the authorities or something? There should be. Just as Vodaphone should be held liable for the use that these trafficked young women put their products to. If they were truly part of the Courageous Society they would have a special nail salon slave blocking function that prevented people ringing them.

  9. So Much For Subtlety

Anon – “Not bad. You just need a backstory about your feminist nom-de-plume and a stock photograph.”

    Working on it:

    >sob< … and then they didn't believe me when I showed them on the doll where Daddy touched me….
