These people are fucking mad

The American womens’ soccer team gets paid less than the mens’. This is, of course, an outrage. So, why does it happen?

Or, take the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), the US’s professional women’s soccer league. The Washington Spirit, DC’s NWSL team, plays its games at the Maryland SoccerPlex in tiny Boyds, Maryland, on the rural northern edge of Montgomery County. The population density in Boyds is 408 people per square mile, compared to about 10,000 people per square mile in Washington, DC.

Maryland SoccerPlex is over forty miles from RFK Stadium, home of the men’s Major League Soccer team DC United, and over ten miles away from the closest Metro station (RFK has its own Metro stop). Getting to Spirit games from RFK, which is centrally located in DC, would take about two hours on public transit. In other words, for your typical DC soccer fan, it is infinitely easier to buy tickets for DC United than it is for the Spirit.

Because the public transit system is sexist apparently.

  1. Ha. Have often wondered when there will be serious calls for have Arsenal’s ‘Ladies’ paid the same as Arsenal’s ‘Men’? I’m betting on 2017, but I may be way over there.

  2. So Much For Subtlety

BC – “The only reason to watch women’s football has nothing to do with the quality of play.”

Well I do like a little lesbian-on-lesbian action but not on the pitch. Not those lesbians. The only reason to watch the US football team is Hope Solo – and she is more to be pitied these days than lusted after.

  3. So Much For Subtlety

The article is more insane that TW gives it credit for. It works by a series of unstated assumptions that are incredibly dubious – like the idea people will watch two teams of lesbians flailing around at a skill level on par with some High School boys teams. But this:

Ferro concludes her piece with this gem: “You, dear reader, can do only one thing and it’s not complaining about prize money on social media. If you want to fix the income disparity in women’s sports, go buy a jersey or tickets for a game.”

Seems reasonable. It is a cart and horse approach. The way to get advertising is to get people to watch the game. But no, that is not on with the Right On Marxists:

This argument deflects blame for the financial woes of women’s soccer’s onto ordinary fans, which is something like blaming restaurant customers for the low pay, frequent wage theft, and terrible sick leave policies in the restaurant industry.

That seems reasonable to me. If the industry abuses it workers and their customers don’t mind, they will abuse their workers. But it is also besides the point. It is like blaming the lack of Shetland restaurants on the customers. Because they prefer to each French food, they do not go to Shetland ones and hence we have no Shetland ones. Which is not odd considering how unpalatable seal blubber, kippers and swedes are. But he thinks we need massive investment to make the customers aware of the joys of rancid cod. Like that will work.

Following Ferro’s advice goes a long way toward showing how nonsensical this argument is. I tried to buy a Marta jersey in the emblematic yellow and green of Brazil’s Seleção. The problem is, it can’t be done. Nobody produces men’s-size jerseys of the sport’s most talented female player, who holds the World Cup goal-scoring record and was a five-time Player of the Year.

Because no one else wants to buy one, no one buys one.

In fact, prior to April of this year you would have been hard-pressed to find a men’s-size jersey even for perennially popular US players like Alex Morgan or Abby Wambach — Nike didn’t start making and selling USWNT jerseys for men until this spring.

See? The US team won, demand surged, Nike met the demand. The demand must come first. There is no point printing them and hoping people will buy them.

His argument is simply asinine. Three times they have tried to set up a professional women’s league since 1999. They keep failing. Because no one wants to see unathletic, talentless lesbians kicking a ball around. Hence the investment has taken place. It failed because the demand was not there.

This is simply a Clause Four moment. The men’s players have made their money by the sweat of their brow. They are entitled to it. The female players have not. They are not entitled to take half the men’s money.

The US women’s team has been beaten by High School teams before. They will, no doubt, be again. No one suggests equal pay for those boys.

  4. The sobering news hit even before the confetti had finished falling on the US Women’s National Team’s (USWNT) victory parade.

Sobering? Damn, I hate sobriety. What’s the news?

While millions still basked in the afterglow of the team’s thrilling 5-2 World Cup Finals win over Japan, a disturbing report started making the rounds on the Internet:

Sobering and disturbing? This sounds bad. Maybe spiders have learned how to fly. Or Jimmy Savile is haunting a playground.

Just tell us, the suspense is killing me.

the US women’s squad would take home only $2 million in prize money after winning their third Cup, compared to the $35 million awarded to the German men’s team

This is the sobering and disturbing news? \_(ツ)_/

Man, I’d hate to see his reaction if he found blood in his poo, or something.

While this sudden interest in the wages of women’s soccer players is certainly born out of a degree of nationalism,

    Booo!

it offers a welcome opportunity to discuss a basic worker fairness issue and raise bigger questions about the value of female labor in our society.

Football players are “workers” now, and kicking a (lightweight, modern) ball is “labour”?

    Marx wept.

How can a sport with such obvious popular appeal — 26.7 million people watched the final match in the US — attract so little in the way of investment?

$2m prize money is nothing to be sneezed at. A lot of sports don’t make that kind of cash.

But yes, it’s less than the World Cup (global audience of a billion people) or the Champions League final (about 200 million watched the final). For the same reason Dagenham & Redbridge players earn less than the USNWT.

How can proponents of gender equality counter the arguments being made by defenders of this massive pay gap, who cite the far smaller revenues brought in by women’s soccer?

    You can’t. Next!

And, most importantly, how do we fix the problem?

Obviously it isn’t a problem, or the ladies’ sides would have trouble finding enough players to field a team.

But they’re seemingly content with their lot, or they’d do something else. I’m sure they’d like a pay rise – who wouldn’t? But revealed preferences and all that.

I tried to buy a Marta jersey in the emblematic yellow and green of Brazil’s Seleção.

Why not just buy a nice dress and call yourself Caitlyn?

Nike didn’t start making and selling USWNT jerseys for men until this spring.

    So brave.

Then he goes off on thousands of words of blah blah blah, I’m a male feminist… bitches love male feminists, right? which I couldn’t be arsed fisking.

    But the punchline was fun:

Zach Zill is a socialist living in New York City.

    Of course.

  5. When you see a name like ‘Zach Zill’, immediately I’m put on my guard – yeah OK it is a Yank article but puhleeze….. you cannot be serious.

Zach, obviously has some nether regions dysfunctionality as our cousins might invent a word – but by trying to score Brownie points with the Amazons, he’s got the wrong team. And btw, to say the least his reasoning if one may name it so, is, off the scale and bizarrely so.

The other thing is, say you get tickets to a major tennis tournament and think wow a big match hopefully! But you don’t know who or, what is, the actual day, you turn up all anticipation but because of bad luck and delayed schedule instead of a men’s clash of the big boys …………is a sedate snooze time afternoon of women’s tennis.
One last thing, have you ever been to a girl footie team match? Heavens, it’s not good, unless you turned up for reasons other than to watch ladies kicking chunks out of each other and not because they necessarily require to – and competitive sport ain’t one of them.

  6. But you don’t know who or, what is, the actual day, you turn up all anticipation but because of bad luck and delayed schedule instead of a men’s clash of the big boys …………is a sedate snooze time afternoon of women’s tennis.

I’d rather watch Maria Sharapova than any of the men play. Hell, I wouldn’t even care if she didn’t pick up her racket.

  7. Well the obvious answer to to get rid of all gender segregation in sports and let the women compete with the blokes; that will end well for the SJWs.

They can share a bath after the game too.

  8. Bloke no Longer in Austria

I think Tim and Samuelbuca are onto something.

What seems to happen a lot in Ladies’ Football is a phenomenon known as “picking the ball up out of the net”.

With a few small changes in kit, this could be the major attraction for the game.

I was talking to a chap recently who attended a reception for a successful British womens’ sporting team. He gave an hilarious description of the girls who “looked pretty feminine on the field, because they were all made-up, when you got close to them they all looked like a bunch of bulldogs.”

Having said that, at Vienna airport I once encountered an Hungarian ladies volleyball team who were without exception utterly gorgeous.

  9. So Much For Subtlety

Bloke no Longer in Austria – “With a few small changes in kit, this could be the major attraction for the game.”

Sepp Blatter was there way ahead of you.

  10. Both Steve and SMFS have nailed it. The article is an embarrassment both to the author and the publication that commissioned it. Anything which contains the term ‘The patriarchy’ is for my mind automatically a candidate for the fiction section of a newsagent’s magazine rack.

Incidentally, the author ought to be careful using Tennis as an example – after all, one might look at the fact the male competitors at times have to play nearly double the amount of time at certain times for the same money as their female counterparts and wonder if that is intrinsically fair – never mind that from a sporting perspective the women’s game is usually the televisual equivalent of Mogadon in comparison with the men’s……

  11. The USA Women’s football team is not as good as Real Madrid, partly because they lack the physical size and strength and partly because it’s Real Madrid and every non-Catalan in the world thinks “Real Madrid!!” and trains to be world-class before applying for a place in the reserves. The world Flyweight champion gets paid less than the world heavweight champion even if he is a better boxer. You are confounding quality of performance due to inherent aptitude with that due to acquired skill with that due to physical strength with the popularity of the spectacle which brings in the paying customers.
None of them justify paying women less for equal performance.
OTOH the Grauniad isn’t interested in performance (otherwise it would try to outsell the UKIPegraph).
