This comment was made by US Senator Orrin Hatch – the chair of the Senate finance committee – on 1 December when talking about the OECD Base Erosion and Profits Shifting process that is trying to crack down on international tax abuse:

At the same time, while international efforts to align tax systems are worth exploring, we shouldn’t be negotiating agreements that undermine our own interests for the sake of some supposedly higher or nobler cause. The interests of the United States – our own economy, our own workers, and our own job creators – should be our sole focus.

No wonder there is tax abuse in the world. It is too often state sponsored, not least by the USA.

Elected politician thinks his job is to look out for his electors. Whatever next, eh?

The man is an idiot. The US may not look out for the interests of other nations, but it is the last country to encourage tax abuse or even tax competition.

Depends how you look at it – there’s a lot of issues around taxation of imported sugar and HFCS for example.

Donald Trump is the only politician supporting immigration policies that look out for his electors. And he is not even a politician.

I don’t know how we end up with such a corrupt, incompetent, treasonous ruling class but good for Hatch. We need less co-operation among our treasonous cosmopolitan elites and more competition.

  4. If he seriously thought the US would sign up to any tax treaty just on the principle of the greater global good then he is truly deranged

  5. I used to have arguments with elected memebrs who said “I am here to do the best for the people who voted for me!” No! You’re here to do the best for *all* the people, whether they voted for you or not, hell, whether they even bothered to get off their arse and drag themselves to the polling booth or not.

  6. One of my (UK based) share dealing accounts hit me with a FATCA self-certification request the other week – asking that I provide proof of residence, tax identification and all places where I pay tax – to make sure I wasn’t a US citizen (and some other other bollocks around Crown Dependencies, which involved HMRC). I told them to tell HMRC and the US to go fuck themselves, and close my account while they are it.
