Hmm

Cecil Rhodes was a man responsible for untold, unending devastation and violence. An architect of South African apartheid

They might want to have a little look at that history curriculum in Oxford really.

  1. Perhaps they should replace the statue with one of Nongqawuse, the Xhosa prophetess who persuaded the tribe to destroy all their cattle and crops as a sacrifice to the gods, resulting in most of them starving to death, and the rest to seek employment from the White Man.

  2. The article is one of the most stupid I have ever seen – the level of historical ignorance and lack of contextual understanding not only stupefying but profoundly depressing, especially given the author is allegedly a recent graduate of one of the top ten universities in the UK (Warwick)

Looking at the Linkedin profilke of the author is like a mirror into a myriad of issues plaguing the country. I am coming to the conclusion that the totalitarian regimes to which extraordinary rendition could be used as a policy option might have insufficient capacity to ‘process’ all the stupid people in Britain – certainly the article should act as a wake up call for anyone wondering how pervasive Leftist PC rule is in the country.

  3. As the glorious infrastucture of great roads, cheap electricity, good state hospitals crumbles, under postcolonial rule, even the Zulu king gets nostalgic for apartheid http://www.timeslive.co.za/politics/2015/12/07/King-Goodwill-Zwelithini-praises-Apartheid-slams-black-people-who-love-to-use-matches
Of course it was Rhodes who started the ball rolling with his dream of a Cape to Cairo railway. Before the discovery first of diamonds, then gold, South Africa was a backward, drought frequented agricultural hole.

  4. Of course the writer might like to compare and contrast the modest thatched cottage on the False Bay coast to which the celibate Rhodes retreated and where he died in a single castiron bed, bequeathing his entire estate to the people of South Africa, two of its universities in addition to the Rhodes scholarships and Oriel college, with his successor, the jilliterate Zuma with his sprawling kraal at Nkandla, equipped from looting the state coffers for his umpteen wives, girlfriends and tribe of children all growing fat on the proceeds of corruption. Rhodes created wealth for the whole of Southern Africa which the locusts are now consuming.

  5. I’d be far less angry about this if they had jailed Bahar Mustafa.

Discriminating against white males and urging people to kill them in the present is just fine.

Getting upset about fictional sins of white men hundreds of years ago is a real concern.

One law for all? Obviously not.

  6. On this basis we should be destroying mosques as the evils perpetrated by Mohammed are far greater than those of Rhodes. Mohammed believed in slavery and did far more to propagate it than Rhodes did. We should ban Islamic studies for the same reason – indeed Islam itself is obviously evil as it condones slavery etc. Oddly the likes of this cretin dont seem to be pushing this line.

  7. Indeed, ken. And the fact that this cretin is not taking that line shows that the motivation is to get whitey.

  8. Dongguan John has it. A Rhides ‘compare and contrast’ with the Zulu empire should put this write right. It won’t though, these bastards have their narrative and no mere fact is ever going to shift that.
    Fact schmact.

  9. There has been a strong tendency towards colonisation and empire building throughout history. The Bantu did quite a lot of it as they migrated throughout much of Africa. What we British are being asked to apologise for is that our forebears were particularly good at it and were, mainly, white.

They have an interesting article on Jacob Malema who is accusing Mandela of being betraying poor Blacks and being bought off by …… the Oppenheimers!

Who are actually Anglicans I believe.

DocBud – “What we British are being asked to apologise for is that our forebears were particularly good at it and were, mainly, white.”

No, we are being asked to apologise for it because we feel shame. We are ashamed of what our ancestors do. When sharks smell blood they go into a feeding frenzy. There is no point asking the Russians or the Chinese to apologise for their colonialism – on going in several cases. They feel no shame. There is no money or political advantage to be wrung from those stony hearts. So no one bothers.

Again, the solution is not even to engage in these disputes. White males, specifically White British males, were the best thing to ever happen to this planet. Billions are alive today because of White English-speaking males. They don’t need to thank us. But they should reflect on their own failings.

  11. untold, unending devastation and violence.

So this devastation and violence is still going on, but nobody has heard of it? Or are these just random adjectives pulled out of a hat?

South Africa is in the running for the highest rape and murder rate in the world. Everywhere there are populations of people of African descent, they have rape and murder rates on the order of eight to ten times higher than comparable White populations.

As this cannot be their fault, it must be all down to Rhodes.

  13. Ian B,

Zimbabwe is certainly suffering devastation and violence, but can we trace these problems back to the rather remarkable Cecil Rhodes or are there more immediate and recent causes?

  14. Oxford’s got a statue of Rhodes, but what about Greece – they named an entire city after this evil colonial oppressor. Surely that needs to be changed?

(well, it’s not much more inaccurate than the original article)

DocBud – “Zimbabwe is certainly suffering devastation and violence, but can we trace these problems back to the rather remarkable Cecil Rhodes or are there more immediate and recent causes?”

Are there even less recent, even older causes that Rhodes? It is well known that bad historical events only start happening when White people turn up, but what was Rhodesia like before Rhodes turned up? A garden of democratic and peaceful Eden no doubt.

I put it forward as a suggestion that Africans kidnap children and force them to be soldiers in areas where, before White people turned up, Africans kidnapped children and forced them to be soldiers. There was an African tribe that (and I stress this next word) allegedly killed all their own children and survive not only by plundering others, but by taking their children to be raised as the next generation.

So what was Zimbabwe like before the present system of autocratic, brutal, incompetent, corrupt, personal rule?

  16. SMFS,

There were a few empires and kingdoms knocking around before Whitey arrived (firstly in the form of the Portuguese who found themselves unable to conquer them). When Shaka started expanding the Zulu nation, he precipitated a period of devastation known as the Mfecane which involved a series of wars, conquests and new nations being born, and a considerable number of deaths. This affected Zimbabwe, chiefly through King Mzilikazi.

All these empires and kingdoms, brutal though they were, were just fine and dandy, being as they involved black kings lording it over blacks. Empires only become evil when whites lord it over blacks.
