This racism tripe is becoming tedious:
Bernie Sanders’ revolutionary vision is good at detecting the ills of Wall Street – but it clearly does not perceive racism. The senator regularly conflates race and class issues, but addressing class oppression won’t magically erase white supremacy. By insisting that it will, Sanders reveals a longing for a post-racial society that (commendably) cares deeply about the poor but does nothing to address how economies are racialized, gendered and made to benefit the able-bodied.
Racism evolves over time. Take how it has impacted what reparations would mean. Originally proposed to cover the debts owed to black people for slavery, any true solution must also address the new ways of systematically damaging black communities that followed, from Jim Crow, redlining and beyond. Well-meaning white people and their failures to seriously confront a racist system from which they benefit have not escaped this evolution either – a product of white supremacy, they find new ways of perpetuating inequality.
Look, the only way to deal with “race” is to stop distinguishing upon the basis of race. For example, I’ve heard that the marrying out rate for Afro-Caribbeans in the UK is some 30%. At that sort of rate a couple of generations and there is no Afro-Caribbean to get worried about either way, as the threat or the threatened. There’s simply a tad more coffee in the complexion of the nation and a few interesting distant cousins to visit on holiday.
Last time this subject came up here one commenter said that she and some friends were discussing (perhaps the others were agonising) over how their variously mixed race children were going to do in a racist society like the UK of today. Our commenter had to point out that of all the children of the entire group discussing this only those of herself and her partner would not be mixed race. The society those children grew up in just wouldn’t have the same conception of race: even barring my usual insistence that the UK of today is one of the least racist societies humans have ever constructed.
And it’s not as if we don’t have historical examples of this. Britain has been variously invaded by Celts, Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, waves of immigration of Hugenots, Irish and blah blah blah. Immediately after such waves the distinctions were important. Two generations later pretty much none of them were. Why? Because we all fucked.
That the US is more racially polarised is indeed a problem. But the solution is the same as the solution has always been. Americans simply need to fuck each other more.
To misquote Tom Lehrer “Get down upon your knees and miscegenate, miscegenate, miscegenate”, that’s the solution.
