You say it Dame Edna!

Or Barry rather:

Humphries is supportive of Greer in the controversy. “I agree with Germaine! You’re a mutilated man, that’s all,” he says. “Self-mutilation, what’s all this carry on? Caitlyn Jenner – what a publicity-seeking ratbag. It’s all given the stamp – not of respectability, but authenticity or something. If you criticise anything you’re racist or sexist or homophobic.”

I have to admit, as with the Lamar Odom thing, this particular case strikes me as more of an audition for a part in the TV show(s) than anything else.

It is an odd question – because Barry has been turning into his mother for decades now. Slowly. Given that Dame Edna started out as a satire of his mother, and in real life BH has moved closer and closer to his mother’s views, is Dame Edna still satire? If so, of his mother or of his paying audience?

  2. Barry Humphries is a considerably more credible female than that Caitlin Jenner is, or ever will be.

I like the French word for them – travesty/travesti. Seems entirely appropriate to me

  3. Breaking news, octogenarian holds old fashioned views.

Entitled to hold them of course, but unremarkable for the age group.

  4. You’re sort of right here, Tim, but still missing the basic point. We’re English, so as a matter of basic politeness if someone asks us to call them a goat, we will abide by their wishes rather than querying it.

I’m english & if anyone asks me to call them a goat I’ll call them an ass. That’s being polite. I’d prefer cunt.

Aren’t you an emigrant? I guess we can see why, if you have that much trouble with the social mores of this country.

  7. I’ll call somebody whatever they prefer to be called. What I object to is being told I have to believe they are whatever they declare they believe themselves to be.

  8. Soory Ian, but what I call people is what I choose to call them. If they wish to intersect my space I get to write the labels
    , not them.

Well, the original Dame Edna was a very different character to the one that became famous (originally she was a timid little mouse). It was never very clear to what extent she was a pisstake on his Mum, and he gradually lost interest in doing that anyway.

He definitely takes the piss out of the audience. There was a famous moment in the 70’s when he introduced this satirical character who was a left-wing Uni lecturer and an asshole. This greatly and visibly disturbed the audience, who up until that point were mostly left-wing Uni types themselves, and overnight he became unfashionable.

Ian B is right: asking me to share your hallucination is just fucking rude. It really is akin to forcing someone to profess a religious creed in which they do not believe. So I’m a heretic. Fuck you.
