Not a redneck death

A father-of-three choked to death on a McDonald’s cheeseburger after trying to eat it in one mouthful, an inquest heard.

Cardiff Coroner’s Court was told Darren Bray, 29, told friends “Watch this,” before cramming the entire burger into his mouth last October.

He passed out at his friend’s house in Barry after a large ball of food became lodged in his airway, the court heard.

The inquest was told that, although Mr Bray had been drinking, it was not enough to impair his judgement.

To be a redneck death “Watch this” and drinking are not enough. It must be “Hold my beer and watch this”.

  1. What’s that rule that any post correcting someone else’s grammer will itself contain a grammatical error?

  2. Muphry’s Law. And one serious delight of my using that at Forbes one time was that the dim bint journo I was attacking derided me for mis spelling Murphy’s Law. and then the subeditor and I had a three times around to and fro my getting it back to Muphry’s and he correcting it to Murphy’s.

Just had to be that one that sparked that.

Isn’t the latest medical opinion that it doesn’t actually work?

  4. SMFS – as a former military medic, yes it does. As long as you can get your arms around the person from behind.

  5. SMFS – what I heard was that they now recommend a combination of back slaps and Heimlich belly squeezes. Previously back slaps had been a no-no, in case the blockage went the wrong way.

Are you sure? The nice people at Wikipedia don’t seem so sure. Nor do the medical authorities of some …. fairly competent countries:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdominal_thrusts

In some areas, such as Australia, authorities believe that there is not enough scientific evidence to support the use of abdominal thrusts and their use is not recommended in first aid. Instead, chest thrusts are recommended.

    Well …. Australia.

I like two things about that page. One is the idea that he recommended it for asthma attacks. The other is teaching it to Afghans. If there is one population I would not ever encourage you to snuggle up from behind with your arms around the waist ….

But I don’t know. I am willing to be convinced.

  7. I seem to have a different definition of redneck than most. Where I grew up you could call the normal country boys yokels, hicks, hell just about anything but redneck. Redneck was saved for the more vocal racists, the ones that would openly admit to lighting crosses. Has anyone else noticed this change or is it just the vernacular that was used in one small town?

“Nobody knew the Heimlich Manouever, apparently.,”

They misunderstood it and thought it was “Harlech Maneuver” so they formed a choir and sang Bread of Heaven.

As to the Heimlich Maneuvre and back slapping I was taught it (again) on a recent sailing first aid course on the basis that its better than letting them die.

  9. The key to the Heimlich manoeuver is to get the thumb knuckles right under the sternum and then thrust upwards into the diaphragm. If whatever is causing the choking has not been dislodged then it’s fingers down the throat time.

  10. abacab thank you. Open bigotries of any type are far easier to identify and avoid that the PC type we have now.

  11. My first thought on reading this story was that we now have one less thick unemployed individual. But then I remembered he’s left us his ‘partner’ and their sprogs. His genes will ripple on…

I always assumed that Australian first aid advice began with the words
“Remove the creature that has just bitten / stung / removed a limb before assisting the victim”

  13. Tinman’ll be along soon to complain about racist jokes.

I don’t see how vomiting all over the patient is going to help much.

That made me smile! You do humour better than you do your ‘theorizing’. 😉

    why not?”

Its a riff on evolution benefitting from the stupid being weeded out of the gene pool by their own actions.

In this case, the dead guy had three kids i.e. his genes live on…
