But why target a nuclear power plant?

The Brussels terrorists may have been plotting to make a radioactive bomb after it emerged 11 nuclear power plant workers have had their site access revoked amid fears of ‘insider help’.
Jihadi brothers Khalid and Ibrahim el-Bakraoui had secretly filmed the daily routine of Belgium’s nuclear programme chief, before they blew themselves up at Brussels airport and on a Metro train.
It is thought the brothers’ spying operation was possible preparation for a kidnap plot to force him to let them into one of Belgium’s two atomic facilities. However, it is likely they switched targets to the less well-guarded airport and Maelbeek Metro station after authorities became suspicious.

Yes, yes, yes, dirty bomb and all that. But you wouldn’t get the material for a dirty bomb from a nuclear power plant anyway. Just wouldn’t work.

I’ll not write a guide to where you would get something useful but the power station ain’t it.

  1. Remember Fukushima, and the German reaction to it.

If the jihadis could get a tiny bomb into the car park of a nuclear plant, a quarter mile from the nearest radioactive stuff, they could induce a lily-livered government to shut down all its nuclear stations.

    Jihad meets gesture politics.

  2. “For a great many people, rational thought stops the moment they hear the word ‘nuclear’.”

And ‘Islam’, though the reaction is the complete opposite to the one for ‘nuclear’.

  3. Rob: you mean people fear ‘nuclear’ but love ‘Islam’?

Those people who reflexively dislike nuclear tend to favour Islam in the same vague, unthinking way.

  4. If its simply radioactive material they want its relatively easy.
Getting highly radioactive material – much harder but not impossible for a sufficient force with the technical knowledge and ability to handle the stuff.
Doing that without the authorities responding would be a neat trick.

Its simply easier to buy an old nuke and at least set it off as a dirty bomb rather than a nuke.
More than one unaccounted for in the last 60 years.

  5. Blowing up a bucket of radium paint should cause wide spread panic.

Oh, Tim said ‘’ll not write a guide to where you would get something useful.’ I’ve gone and done it now.

  6. Mate used to work at one of these places reckoned the newspaper he brought to work became classified as “nuclear waste” when he’d binned it. Given the intellectual capacity of some of our politicians, they’d probably go into panic mode over a “dirty bomb” made of discarded canteen serviettes.

  7. “For a great many people, rational thought stops the moment they hear the word ‘nuclear’.”

Because lying leftist “experts” and the lying leftist hyenas in the media who parrot their garbage endlessly have conditioned the public.

At which point the retaliation would be so over the top that no person supporting ISIS would be left alive. I’m not sure that is quite what the terrorists want.

Seriously, having had a nuclear bomb let off do you think the bed-wetter types would have any chance of stopping the reaction?

  9. Chester,

    Do you think so?
In the thought experiment I run I really can’t imagine Western govt being capable of the moral will to destroy an enemy, even if there was overwhelming support from their populations.

The intelligensia, media, and our betters wouldn’t let them. We currently live in a world where our ruler’s fear of being called ‘racist’ is greater than their fear of an enemy blowing large numbers of their population up*

*see European reactions to every Islamic terror attack.

Chester Draws – “At which point the retaliation would be so over the top that no person supporting ISIS would be left alive. I’m not sure that is quite what the terrorists want.”

We have accepted the gang rape of young girls. Even here people like Rusty and BiG have defended the rapists and attacked people criticising them.

So yes, the Left would be able to hold back retaliation. Not that there would be any. Because they hate us.

  11. There wouldn’t be any retaliation because everyone would agree that it’s not about Islam, the (nuclear) bombers were bad individuals who just happened to be Muslim. The vast majority are peace-loving people, who just happen to have a guerilla army in their midst. Under no circumstances must civilians be blamed for the actions of soldiers hiding amongst them.
The USA interned Japanese-Americans in WWII; no country in the west could get away with it today.

It’s not a perfect parallel, but I f during WW2 three million Germans had been living in Britain, and more were stowing away in lorries or claiming asylum to reach the country, and we knew that some percentage of them were SS assassins or supporters thereof (say 10%), but we could not identify the SS from the non SS, what would have been your preferred method of dealing with this undoubted problem?

    @SMFS,

That’s basically libellous and a retraction would be appreciated.
