Err, what?

The Liberal Democrats plan to introduce all-women, gay and disabled shortlists at the next election to reduce the culture of ‘too male and too pale’ MPs.

I thought the Lib Dems already had more than their fair share of interesting sexualities?

  1. Daily Mail getting facts completely wrong shocker.

Conference will vote on a (not brilliantly worded) motion today, Jennie and others are speaking and voting strongly against it anyway, but that summary isn’t even close to what it proposes.

  2. “He also wants it to become the first party to have disabled-only shortlists for candidates in winnable seats.”

So, any Tom Dick or Harriet can’t possibly represent the interests of the disabled properly, but Jake The Peg can totally fully represent his majority bipedal constituents because … errr…. help me out, someone….

  3. LOL.

The Liberal Democrats plan to introduce all-women, gay and disabled shortlists at the next election to reduce the culture of ‘too male and too pale’ MPs.

Because women, gays and the handi-capable can be useless cunts, too.

Potential seats will also be earmarked for Asians, blacks and other ethnic minorities, as part of sweeping changes to the social make up of the party.

I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing how this works out for them.

Under the proposals, local parties will be able to reserve places on their shortlists for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexuals and ethnic minorities, including Asians and blacks.

No word yet on when they’re going to boost representation for squirrel-suited pansexual otherkin though.

  4. Mat – you seem to have your finger on the Lib Demseses’ thready pulse.

What is their position on adult men who dress up as squirrels?

    Asking for a friend.

  5. “Under the proposals, local parties will be able to reserve places on their shortlists for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexuals and ethnic minorities, including Asians and blacks.”

    My predictions:

    The number of gay, lesbian etched members will increase;
There will be a startling number of current members who suddenly discover they are gay.

How do they prove it anyway? If Liarwatha turned up and demanded a seat be reserved for “native Indians”, are they going to say “you aren’t one”?

Do people with two black parents trump someone with only one? The ‘Asian’ category: who wins between a Pakistani, an Indian and a Korean?

What if you are gay and black? Are you allowed to sign up for both? Can you win both? Double your money!

  6. As (Number of MPs) divided by (Number of seats in the HoC) tends towards 0, the loopier the policies become.

I hope Ecksy turns up soon to tell us how he would feel about being represented by a black bugger in a mobility scooter.

  7. The Mail must be making it up. Why would a Left-wing, painfully Progressive and self-hating party want to exclude white men anyway? It makes no sense.

  8. It’s definitely the lack of wheelchair-bound Pakistani lesbians that’s making the LibDems unelectable. Nothing to do with how their voters were disappointed in them once they saw what they did with a sniff of power.

  9. > Potential seats will also be earmarked for Asians, blacks and other ethnic minorities …
In majority-BME constituencies does whitey get a quota too?

  10. As in the old political truism

    Tory scandals are about sex
    Labour scandals are about money
Liberal scandals are about shooting dogs and shitting in handbags

  11. ummmm… whichever way you look at it.. the mind boggles..

Not that the Dutch don’t have parties that use the Special Interest/minority angle, but the “education and capability” requirement still trumps everything else. It’s more of a bonus if any Special Interest is part of the package.

Making any Special Interest the prime requirement is…stupid..

Besides that.. “Positive discrimination” is still discrimination, and can be attacked and prosecuted as such.
There’s a fine line between selecting on secondary characteristics for equal proven capability, and selecting on secondary characteristics off the bat.

And I don’t think any capable woman ( or any other [insert here]) would like to be associated with something like this. It’s… insulting..

  12. I always wonder about the real level of belief in this sort of system when the statement doesn’t end with “…and that’s why I am resigning my position to allow a selection between these three minority (possibly squirrel-suited) candidates.”

  13. I remember being shocked to the core at the reports of Lord Rennard’s behaviour.

It was such a change to hear of a male Liberal Democrat interested in girls…

  14. Bloke in Costa Rica

Given the trajectory of their Parliamentary representation I assume this ‘conference’ will be held in a booth at Nando’s. It would appear that they have hired as a political consultant Mr. Eric ‘Otter’ Stratton: “I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part! “

  15. “I hope Ecksy turns up soon to tell us how he would feel about being represented by a black bugger in a mobility scooter.”

The only problem I see with the above is an issue of height.

The scooter squad will divide the aim of a mass firing squad. All 650 of them need to be roughly at the same height (I was going to say on the same level but they are already there).

They could up the mobility squad on blocks I suppose.

Hopefully old 1-2-3 “winner” blocks to add well-deserved mocking irony to an already wonderful event.

  16. The soft twats went and passed the motion. So there will be all-women shortlists and at least one all-disabled shortlist. Discrimination on something unrelated to ability to represent.

Maybe they saw the top two politicians in Germany, one a woman, and one in a wheelchair, and thought we want some of that, while ignoring how it happened.

The Lib Dem world has gone mad. Diversity used to mean being on either side of a debate on whether farm subsidies are good, technicians versus generalists, talented lazy people versus untalented grafters, that sort of thing. Not now. Won’t be renewing my membership now – that’ll show them.

  17. They’ve got 8 MPs; on those numbers you can’t get proportionate representation of any minority until it has around 12.5% of the population.

That would be 1 moxed representation ethnic minority MP, preferably with 3 asian and one black grandparents.

The gays don’t come close to 12.5%.

Disabled, depends on classification and which statistics you use.

Or perhaps the LibDems could wait until they’re relevant before worrying about this sort of thing.
