On that sex slave trafficking

The other girl said: ‘I wanted to build a future for myself. But when we go here they changed completely.
‘They forced us to do things we did not agree to. I was afraid of the slightest movement.’
The girls were freed a fortnight after being brought to the UK when police received a tip-off from a member of the public on Twitter and raided the brothel.

As ever, it undoubtedly happens. But not to any large extent as pretty quickly one or other of the punters will realise what is happening and dob the traffickers in. Being forced into prostitution is vile, it’s rape. The bastards also got 53 years for doing it, good. But it’s not going to happen very often and it’s not going to last very long when it does.

As BiS tells us, the economics don’t work either:

A few days after meeting Matei and Petre the men became their ‘boyfriends’ and enticed them with the dream of moving to the UK.
They left Romania, travelling across Europe and catching the ferry to Dover.
From there they were driven to a rented three-bedroom terrace in Preston, Lancashire, where they were told they would be expected to work as prostitutes.
Police believe the girls were visited by as many as 10 men a day, and while one of them made £1,000 through prostitution she was not allowed to keep a penny.

Risking 52 years, bringing someone over from Romania, for £1,000? That’s not an economic transaction, is it, that’s just gross stupidity.

  1. “Police believe the girls were visited by as many as 10 men a day, and while one of them made £1,000 through prostitution she was not allowed to keep a penny.”

10 men a day for a fortnight for £1,000? That’s £7 a time. Surely it’s not that cheap, even in Preston?

Presumably “as many as” is Plod exaggerating again, but even if the average is 5 a day and she only worked 10 days, that’s only £20 a time. If sex is really that cheap, it looks like the bottom has dropped out of the market (so to speak) and sex trafficking is going to die away because it simply isn’t worth it.

  2. Unless both perpetrators and victims are in Rotherham, where they’ve been getting away with it for decades.

In Rotherham the clients were knowingly breaking the law, and quite pleased to be doing so.

  3. Yes. And there’s nothing more you can do than that. People murder their wives or business partners despite massive disincentives and high chance of going to jail. They do it out of stupidity – they think they can defeat the police. And that’s as good as it’s ever going to get.

Sex slavery doesn’t work as crime needs small numbers of trusted co-conspirators. If you’re pulling in 10 people a day that you don’t know, that’s a huge risk. A lot of punters disapprove of slavery, probably most. A lot of those won’t go back just because a girl who hates it is crap at it. A lot will twig what’s going on and just not go back, but be scared to go to the police. But there’s enough that will report it.

TBH I can’t understand why anyone would use a brothel today. It’s all Internet now. Find a woman working from a flat or doing out calls.

  4. You are assuming that the story is true Tim.It is boiler-plate bog-standard trafficking bullshit.

Ordinary prostitutes come here from Eastern Europe because the punters are richer and –sometimes–because they can tell the folks back home they are coining it as au pair girls and return home enriched without any local stigma of being a known lady of the night.

Plod catches them in action. Plod can harass punters but not arrest the girls for what is not illegal. But Plod has been told to make a big song-and-dance about the feminist narrative so they will suggest to the girls that they might be arrested and deported as prossies unless they say they were brought here against their will. Now the rozzers can arrest anyone for anything these days :

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO8EpfyCG2Y

but working as a pro is not illegal and they can’t deport EU crew for anything much. However the girls will likely not know this. And when PC PC mentions possible compo after their “ordeal” as well –Bob’s yer Unkle. The girls know they can go back on the game as soon as the idiots hove out of view again so it is a nice potential bonus for them. And they will remain anonymous here and abroad.

Now the Rozz have been desperate to score a big hit on trafficking ( to please their femmi-polit masters) since the laughable collapse of their Operation Pentameter farce–573 trafficking arrests get looked at and boil down to exactly zero real cases–and this may be it.

Their media pals are certainly on the job. The “squalid” conditions consist of a room with a bed in it–certainly everything that was in that now bare room will have been taken as evidence by plod–and we are supposed to believe these girls plied their trade on an empty mattress? What an attractive prospect for the punters. And the poor girls Mother had just died a few months ago. How awful for her.

As usual the article is short on details. How were these girls kept prisoner–were they locked up every night? Were these “pimps” -on hand every minute of the day to prevent an escape? That what has to be done with prisoners. If these girls spoke enough English to negotiate with punters they only had to get out of the house one time and say “Plese hep me Mister Policeman” and that would end their captivity.

A tip came in from Twitter. Perhaps they did beg a punter for help. Or perhaps a rival or a dissatisfied customer did the deed.

These girls need to be watched like hawks( they wont be of course). If they are ever found on the game again–the 3 males need to be released.
Fifty years in jail so cops can look good to femminists is unfair even on EE gangsters. And the taxpayer. They should certainly be deported–but the EU won’t let us do that.

  5. “Plod can harass punters but not arrest the girls for what is not illegal.”

That should read “cannot arrest the girls –and have any chance of convicting them–for what is not illegal”

As I say they can arrest you for anything or nothing as a harassment tactic but they can’t-yet–hope to convict you for what is not illegal.

  6. Ecksie.. You’re leaving one thing out of your train of “logic”.. : blackmail..

Romania is most definitely *not* feminazi western europe, and an “operator” who uses the Boyfriend ( Loverboy) approach will know the womans’ family.
The stigma of prostitution over there is…significant, and enough to “chain down” women , and make them cooperate, more effectively than any physical barrier.
This is a country where blood feud is only barely history, and then only formally. Not exactly big on equality between the sexes as well, when it comes to that.

The fact that the criminal element from Bulgaria/Hungary makes even the old mobsters/gangs look like absolute pussies doesn’t help either. Crims from that area don’t play nice, and are positively ruthless.
Trafficking from eastern europe works, because the blokes doing it do not mess about with threats. And do not care about “collateral damage”.

  7. Richard,

Prices have fallen in real terms over 20 years.

Two things: 1) there’s lots of girls doing this on a part-time/on-demand basis. Someone can work 5 days at Tesco and do the odd few clients for an evening. That’s massively increased supply 2) mostly no longer brothels. Instead of someone taking £15 a punt, people are finding girls via internet which had tiny charges and they either visit you or operate from home.

It’s still good money – £50+/hr in cheaper places, but that’s lousy criminal money.

  8. Sex slavery doesn’t work as crime needs small numbers of trusted co-conspirators.

Which is exactly where it does work, even in this modern age – whether it is a solo nutter with a girl in the basement or Rotherham-type tightly bound gangs.

Where is doesn’t work (as discussed mush passim) is “sex slavery as an openly-pimped prostitute”.

  9. Traffickers are indeed required to monitor their victims for extended periods, i.e. until the monetary conditions for releasing the victims are met. These periods can often be very long. In the case of Nigerian trafficking, the amount of money typically requested by exploiters ranges between $40,000 and $70,000 (Okojie et al. 2003: 7 and 68; Prina 2003: 21). This translates into victims being held captive for a minimum of one year to (often) three years or more (Okojie et al. 2003; Prina 2003: 74; Carling 2006: 7). The monitoring problem is exacerbated by the diverging incentives of traffickers/exploiters and victims. The latter still retain some degree of agency and can therefore make decisions, such as whether to declare the full amount earned in a given day. In addition, victims tend to spend part of their time away from the direct control of traffickers, as in the case of sex workers having encounters with clients.

  10. Anon: “Someone can work 5 days at Tesco and do the odd few clients for an evening. “

Really? I’d have thought you needed much better customer skills….

  11. “They left Romania, travelling across Europe and catching the ferry to Dover.”

So a vote to remain in the EU is a vote for modern slavery.

    Good to know.

  12. Tim

I think criminals operate with low expected rents. In fact most criminals have negative expected NPVs on their projects – given prison etc. I think the actual gains numbers are higher in line with the numbers I quote above, but the returns are still pretty low.

  13. Grikath: “The stigma of prostitution over there is…significant, and enough to “chain down” women , and make them cooperate, more effectively than any physical barrier”

So the stigma in the old country of being raped and forced into prostitution is such that two girls who wanted a new life over here anyway co-operate with their captors.

That is not very credible in the cold light of day. One girl says her Mother is dead and no mention of the Father so she continues to be a prossie under blackmail that Uncle Frank and Aunt Mary back in Bucharest might find out –what? That she has been ( such is the coppers claim) raped and held as a unwilling sexual prisoner? She would still be regarded as such damaged goods that– despite not wanting to be in Romania anyway–she continues to co-operate daily with her own degradation and sexual servitude in her new country?

    Errr….No.

SE: Nutters –the Austrian Basement Bloke and In-Group Ethnics (who weren’t using their own women) can happen–but not as a paying cash business–which is what the trafficking crapola claims are all about.

Ken–When you speak of Nigerian sex slavery I assume you mean in Nigeria. Well what goes on in primitive and utterly corrupt shitholes is one thing. The claims made about the West–that wicked white men are happy to force themselves on legions of forcibly imported and held-against-their-will foreign girls–often under age–is a load of evil cobblers. Part of the wicked capitalist white hetero-male whoresshit being propagated by the Marxist femmi-left.

  14. SE,

Yes. But it doesn’t work where the feminazis want it. It’s a pro-legalisation argument – bring it out into the open, investigate brothels that aren’t licensed.

  15. Mr Ecks

Nope the study is of Nigerians brought over to Europe – Italy and the Netherlands. It’s one of the tiny percentage of trafficking cases that is actual prostitution based and not illegal migration. Take a look at the paper.

  16. I would read it Ken–but the Oxford Journal of Whatever won’t let me.

Even so the anti-trafficking crew are more than a gang–they are a multi-million industry. So –unless one of the 12 Apostles wrote the article– I would not be inclined to believe it. You could spend your life reading the deserts of dreary and deceitful drivel spewed by the ton-weight from the anti-traffickers. Very little of it is subtle and much of it is actively risible.

See “The Honest Courtesan” blog for chapter and verse. It will be a long read.

  17. So they kidnapped them and forced them into prostitution IN PRESTON. The evil bastards should be castrated.

  18. Mr Ecks,

There was almost certainly plenty of cash changing hands in Rotherham. Why would the pimps – sorry, the 13 year old girls’ 23 year old boyfriends – give out something for free when they can charge for it?

  19. Andrew M –still think it would be amateur hour cash capers from an in-house crew who mostly knew each other. Probably met at Church so to speak. Some cash may have changed hands but it was not an open business where anyone with the notes could buy what they wanted.

  20. @Ecks

    “Plese hep me Mister Policeman”

BiG is learning magic (Paul Daniels type-stuff, not Harry Potter or Aleister Crowley). It’s hard because it relies on deceit, which requires the credulity and ignorance of your audience, whereas most of the other stand-up BiG does as part of the day job relies only on audience ignorance. Essentially, you have to keep a straight face while pulling a fast one over a group of people that will include many with more raw brainpower than the performer – when it’s obvious to the performer what you are doing.

A lot of people are very credulous. Which is why the con-trick of stage magic works. So if you tell a newly-broken-in Romanian whore in Preston that she’ll go to jail for being a hooker if she says “plese Mr Poliseman help me”, I’ve no doubt you can say that in a very credible manner to someone who has already been talked into being taken to Nowheresville in the UK with the promise of riches.

  21. Mr Ecks

I see the links to the side as “free”. The study is of a small network of actual traffickers – and more about how it works – the problems of negotiation when one cannot access the courts etc. It’s not part of the left wing claptrap about how everyone who is brought illegally across borders is trafficked. Interestingly I’m told that it costs about the same to smuggle someone into the country as it costs the government to deport someone…

  22. BiG: “So if you tell a newly-broken-in Romanian whore in Preston that she’ll go to jail for being a hooker if she says “plese Mr Poliseman help me”, I’ve no doubt you can say that in a very credible manner to someone who has already been talked into being taken to Nowheresville in the UK with the promise of riches.”

Yes–there are some people who are be that dumb. Can’t argue with you there.

But how many? The tens and indeed hundreds of thousands that the anti-traffickers claim?

A woman has been told that she is to have an at least reasonable job and what she gets is raped and a life of sex slavery. Which she has to co-operate with under guard. However three pimps guarding/controlling every two women is not any sort of prosperous lifestyle. At 10 customers a day x 2 at lowish rates for unskilled and coerced labour all of them would be better off on the dole.

As for the policeman point. Well I could believe it of ignorant downtrodden 19th century peasant girls brought in by the Comorra 150 years ago. But are modern East European girls dumb enough to believe that if they have been raped , threatened, possibly beaten and forced to work as a prostitute then British coppers/courts are going to say “Now then, never mind that Missy we are going to see you inside for being forced to do naughty things against your will”. Really? In any case if her ordeal is so bad would she not prefer to be inside rather than being raped 10 times a day?

  23. @TimN requests figures. I was looking at the pay sheets for the xickas as one of our moderately successful cat houses for last week. Typical girl did 5 tricks, 4 1/2h incalls 1 1h outcall for 150€ to her. House takes the other half.
3 hours on the job because that’s how much on the job was required. Few hundred more punters would be gratefully received, anyone of you lads fancies booking Easyjet.

  24. Andrew M- good point. Yes, it should be stipulated that said punters would have to be British.. or European.. or East Asian.. or generally real human beings to give a fuck about the position the women are in.

  25. JuliaM,

I used to shop at Tesco all the time. Switched to Waitrose because of proximity and that I like smaller stores, but in terms of service, I don’t think anyone was much better.

  26. So Much For Subtlety

Girls can be stupid. I suspect the boyfriend who says “We can be together baby, but we need some money, it will only be once” is the most common route to prostitution.

However people are missing the obvious – they survived a whole two weeks in the UK before the plod caught up with them. That is pretty efficient. Almost as good as visiting a car accident. Longer than I would have guessed.

Clearly there is not a lot of forced prostitution going on.

  27. So Much For Subtlety

By the way, 53 years? I hope that is shared out among the three of them. Well actually I don’t care if it is shared out among the three of them. It is not an inappropriate sentence.

What is is the fact they would have got less if they had killed them. 53 years? That is 17 years a piece.

    Our Courts have weird priorities.

  28. So Much For Subtlety

So 17 years apiece. Here is a contrast:

A ‘controlling’ classical musician has been jailed for at least 17 years and 164 days after he was convicted of murdering his world-renowned concert pianist wife.

Norwegian national John Martin, 48, beat and strangled Natalia Strelchenko, 38, on their two year wedding anniversary at their home in Newton Heath, Manchester.

Jailing him at Manchester Crown Court for life, Mrs Justice Laura Cox told the defendant that it had been a ‘brutal, sustained and unprovoked attack’.

Martin, who has served a prison term in Norway for assaulting Ms Strelchenko on two previous occasions, must serve a minimum term of 17 years and 164 days before being released on licence.

Now they are not exactly comparable. But two weeks working as a prostitute. A repeat offender who beat his wife to death with no provocation at all.

I wonder which most women would prefer.

  29. ken

    > In fact most criminals have negative expected NPVs on their projects – given prison etc

What kind of discount rate are you talking about? Genuinely curious.

If crims have very large discount rates (i.e. short time horizons) then e.g. threat of prison (not just uncertain, though they may incorrectly estimate its probability, but also temporally distant) may not be a big factor in their calculation.

  30. A woman has been told that she is to have an at least reasonable job and what she gets is raped and a life of sex slavery. Which she has to co-operate with under guard.

I knew a Kazakh girl who told me she had been brought to Abu Dhabi under the pretence of being a seamstress and was told on arrival she’d actually have to be a hooker. She seemed a bit too enthusiastic in her new role for me to have applied much credibility to the story.

  31. So Much For Subtlety

Tim Newman – “I knew a Kazakh girl who told me she had been brought to Abu Dhabi under the pretence of being a seamstress”

So she either had a lot of British clients or Terry Pratchett has been translated into Russian?
