Slightly a bit odd

Keira’s thing is to hide who you are and I don’t think you can be an actor and do that.

Thought that was being what an actor did sorta thing. Not being yourself, pretending to be someone else?

    Well, yes and no.
There is always the thing that it breaks the spell if it looks like “someone is acting”.

That’s what was wrong with Top Gear on Sunday. It was too obviously people parroting lines.

  2. So Much For Subtlety

Come on, P-G. No one here is going to defend the new Top Gear.

I suspect, perhaps unfairly, that what he means is that she was not open to the idea of sleeping with him.

  3. “Keira Knightley is a supermodel, not an actor”

Hmmm… the Oscars, SAG and Golden Globes disagree. You can write off the GGs if you like, but the others are nominated by her peers. They think she’s an actress. And frankly, John Carney has made one low budget film that was successful.

“I learned I’ll never make a film with supermodels again.”

Or anyone with a name, either. You’ll be doing more low budget movies like Once for the rest of your life because no A or B list actress wants to be called that. Most directors don’t even talk about this stuff. If they worked with someone and it didn’t work, they just don’t use them again.

  4. JuliaM,

Jason Statham is a very talented and versatile actor. He has performed roles requiring him to punch people, take his shirt off and drive cars really fast: he has driven cars really fast, punched people and taken his shirt off: and recently he took his shirt off and punched someone while driving a car really fast.

(Though I like a surprising amount of the stuff he appears in, because he does what he does pretty well, seems to be having fun while doing it, and appears to take it only seriously enough)

  5. Jason/Julia,

The Stath is a movie icon, like Arnie, Cary Grant, John Wayne. People went to see John Wayne movies for John Wayne to be John Wayne.

That said, he played a broader role in The Bank Job and was really good. Of his “Stath” films, I particularly love the madness of Crank.

Same here. There is little by way of pretension or earnestness.

  7. People say that M Streep is a good actress, but I find her annoying. She always has an air of “Look at me, am I not a fine actress? Observe me acting!”

I wish she did have a ruddy farm in Africa, and stayed there.

  8. Statham was a diver in the 1988 British Olympics team and came 12th in the 1992 diving world championship.

As far as I know, not a lot of people know that.

  9. And on Keira Knightley: irrespective of her acting talent, or lack, and onto the important aspects of her.

She doesn’t have enough up top for me to want to watch her perform. Shallow that may be, but I’m the one paying, or not, for the tickets.

  10. One learns something every day on Big Tim’s blog!

Today I learn that giving up about 15 minutes into Crank was perhaps ill-judged.

Will have to try again. Perhaps more wine…

  11. Did enjoy the way statham played up the piss take of his character in the recent Spy movie and the phone advert where everyone in it has his face photoshopped on them including a baby

  12. Bloke in Costa Rica

Statham’s excellent. He can do drama as well. Redemption was a pretty good movie.

There’s a new film out called Hardcore Henry that looks to capture some of the manic energy of Crank. It is Statham-less, though.

  13. I am not a great movie buff but I have watched a few films involving Keira Knightly and am convinced that she can act.
Incidentally, most models are a bit more bulgy because people like BraveFart like bulges.
