A stunning 78.2 percent of the models in the Spring 2016 ads are white. That’s a slight dip from last season, when white models constituted 84.7 of the total. The next-largest piece of the pie is very, very small: Black models make up 8.3 percent, followed by Asian models at 4 percent and Latina models at 3.8 percent.
White Americans are the racial majority. African Americans are the largest racial minority, amounting to 13.3% of the population. Hispanic and Latino Americans amount to 17% of the population, making up the largest ethnic minority. The White, non-Hispanic or Latino population make up 62.5%of the nation’s total, with the total White population (including White Hispanics and Latinos) being 77%.
There were 422 model appearances in 236 campaigns.
There are 340 million Americans.
We are how many standard deviations away from equality here then? Or, to put it the other way around, what are the odds that this is just random variation rather than “wacism”? Are we at the 95% confidence level?
