How gorgeous from the Grnaudain

If referendums are the answer, we’re asking the wrong question
Martin Kettle

Don’t whatever you do, ask the people to speak. Because they might not agree with us enlightened ones.

  1. Yes they bloody are. A party stood on this ticket, got enough votes to scare another, who then made the same promise and had to deliver when elected.

Whether you like the result or not, that’s democracy in action.

  2. Alistair Campbell was on the BBC last night explaining that people don’t like choices and want their MPs to make decisions for them, and it was wrong and unfair to confuse people with this choice to make.

    Because he’s a twat.

  3. Representative ‘democracy’ is a historic relic which should have be put out of our misery already.

It’s only the best system where you can’t get to London to represent yourself on a regular basis.

I envy the Swiss with their regular turnstile count votes.

  4. Bloke in North Dorset

If we hadn’t had a referendum UKIP would have had a landslide at the next GE.

Labour would have been wiped out and the Tories would have been a rump, with only their more EU sceptic MPs and possibly a couple of others having any chance.

  5. The Other Bloke in Italy

Ian, I had vaguely assumed that by now, Campbell had drunk himself to death.

You were missing for a while. Nothing serious I hope.

My dear Ecks, your observations today are excellent, but what is this “CM” of which you have been speaking recently?

  6. “Alistair Campbell was on the BBC last night explaining that people don’t like choices and want their MPs to make decisions for them, and it was wrong and unfair to confuse people with this choice to make.”

We need him on TV more.

  7. It’s wonderful. We have major figures on the Left saying in public that their supporters are thick and cannot be trusted to make decisions about their own lives.

The next General Election will be interesting.

  8. Rob,

The bien-pensant left “intellectuals” have always been like that – look at the Fabians, who actually wanted eugenics. It’s just with the shift in Labour from making approving noises about workers to shoring up the core vote (most of whom share their authoritarian and faux-benevolent tendencies), it’s more obvious.

  9. All that has happened here is that the British have finally noticed the water being sucked away from the shore and have realised this means a tidal wave of geopolitical and economic disasters is soon to arrive.

That we have set off running for higher ground may give us a better chance of survival than the tourists still gawping on the beach, but our chances are not good.

And sprinting uphill is a lot more painful than relaxing on a sun lounger – brace for the pain.

  10. Bloke in Costa Rica

My only regret is that I cannot be in the UK to openly mock sad weepy Grauniad types.

  11. Switzerland has lots of referendums and seem to be a lot richer than us. I think there could be a connection, lets copy them and see what happens.

Would you care to expand on your gnomic post? It could mean almost anything. What are predicting?
