Jolyon pisses off Murph

Oxfam have taken the real transaction – a donation of clothing – and done the charity shop equivalent of a Double Irish. To get from A to D in a tax efficient manner they’ve walked round three sides of a square. That looks to me like tax avoidance.

Interesting, no?

Difficult really. who should we believe, the Tax QC or the tax campaigner who has done paid work for Oxfam?

Questions, questions…..

  1. How’s about we tell any self-appointed white, middle-aged “expert” who deigns to lecture us on what is and what is not tax avoidance to go fuck themselves?

Just an idea. But it’s an idea whose time has come.

  2. Jolyon Maugham has an article on his blog complaining about The Taxpayers Alliance. He says that they are complicit in tax avoidance because they receive grants from a charitable trust. His point being that payments received direct from the public wouldn’t receive tax relief but payments routed via the trust do.

So…….say a vociferous blogger on tax received grants from a charitable trust. Would that make him complicit in tax avoidance?

  3. @aaa

I’m with you, except that I am at a loss to understand why the alleged expert’s age and skin colour are relevant?

(To be fair, I tend to find middle-aged people more worth listening to than either young people [not enough experience] or old [not enough marbles]).

  4. Jolyon carping about the Taxpayers’ Alliance’s funding: he can’t find any substantive arguments against their policies so he attacks the man instead.

This is insane. The whole point about tax avoidance is the risk factor – if you give money to X in order for them to give it to Y, what is the risk that X decides once he’s got the money that he’s going to spend it on hookers and blow? Because if X can do that and there’s nothing the putative tax avoider can do about it then it isn’t by definition any tax avoidance scheme. Its just two independent parties making independent decisions.

Other wise it becomes a sort of zen concept – if I give money to charity X who give it to Y, and I disapprove of Y and wouldn’t have given them money myself, then thats not tax avoidance. But if they give it to someone I do approve of, then it suddenly IS tax avoidance.

These people are seriously fucking nuts. I am definitely now of the opinion Leftist attitudes are a form of mental illness, there’s just no other explanation for it. I mean, I get old school Labour thinking – ‘I’ve got bugger all, that blokes got millions, I want some of it’. Thats perfectly rational. Not right, but rational personal greed. But all this modern SJW stuff is so convoluted and dependent on the mental state of the person doing the observing and judging, that the only explanation is several dozen screws loose.

  6. @Jim, +1 to that last para.

It seems to me that a lot of (far) Left-wing politics is a vehicle for people with similar mental issues to club together and self-reinforce while convincing themselves that not only are they the sane ones, but also that they’re the good guys.

  7. Over at CapX there is an article on how Uber is causing problems for progressive types.

Ties in with Jim’s last para

Well to be fair, that’s not much of an achievement.

Even I’ve done it and so (thanks to my psychic skills and Murphy’s lack of general knowledge) have various members of the GDR’s politburo.

While we’re on the subject of Murphy (and the regimen today seems to consist largely of Murphy and Dildos – which one might argue is really just more of the same), has anyone discovered what The Future of Blogging will bring us?

  9. The Meissen Bison

He has said he will keep blogging until he is 80 which is arguably the most terrifying thing I have witnessed outside of ISIS controlled territory in the last six months….

Such good news – I hope he is spared to entertain us for another quarter century during which the world will still not have taken his advice while he urges planet by planet reporting ever more stridently.

  11. Isn’t the Taxpayers Alliance in favour of tax avoidance on the basis that taxes are too high so you are fully entitled to do anything you legally can to reduce your taxes. That is my position.

  12. “you are fully entitled to do anything you legally can to reduce your taxes. That is my position.”

That is, in fact, everyone’s position. Some people just apply it differently to others than they do to themselves.

How London cabbies changed from fat white racist cockneys to heroes of the Left. There’s a book in there somewhere.
