I don’t understand why people who hate Boris and Farage are grumpy that they are now stepping back from front-line politics.
The Meissen Bison
It’s because they’re pathologically unsuited to happiness!
Bloke no Longet in Austria
I was just watching a German news TV channel ( n-tv) which painted Farage’s departure in fully negative terms and stated that there will be few tears at his departure. Shureley they mean “moment of greatesht triumph” ?
I have become quite disillusioned with the lazy reporting that I see from Continetal broadcasters. I guess like the BBC they have a vested interest in being pro-EU and need to talk down Brexit at every opportunity.

I’ve had huge admiration for Farage since I found his back catalogue of speeches and Q&A sessions in meeting places up and down the country, there’s a lot on Youtube.
He’s been slogging away at this for years, at times when there seemed no prospect of a referendum, not sure I could have kept at it that long.
We all owe him big time, and if I ever meet him I’ll buy him as much beer as he can handle.
He has done a great job, but can anybody tell why he seems to fall out with everybody he teams up with?
The Inimitable Steve
I’m so glad that after Jo Cox’s senseless death we’re no longer doing the “politics of hate”.

So long, Nigel, and thanks for all the fish
Was this Douglas Adams reference just out-of-place laziness, or genuine? Nigel has helped to win back a whole lot of fish.
Rob
A grumpier, more graceless set of wankers it would be hard to find than the Remnants.
Which is strange, because their self-image is one of Progressive, optimistic nice people.

Inimitable Steve
I was just thinking that!
Additionally, if she is that unhappy at being marooned on a ‘tiny Island’ why doesn’t she head off into continental Europe where I’m sure her ready wit and keen grasp of history will afford her a warm welcome?
Paul
Ah Steve, for those who indulge in the politics of hate, it doesn’t count if it’s Farage.
You see Farage is *wrong* so it’s okay to threaten him in a pub, but (insert leftie) is *right* so even the most minor criticism of them is unacceptable.
AFAICS they really do think like this.
I think Carswell is very very lucky the mob that jostled him in 2015 only thought he was a Tory, and were too dumb to recognise the UKs only UKIP MP.
PeteC
Seriously though, what do they expect him to do? He’s not a member of parliament and I doubt he has much influence over British govt policy as an MEP.
Still, it’s an opportunity to winge.
Jim
He better not get too flabby in retirement.
If the usual establishment fix gets in, there’s a good chance that by 2020 we’ll still be in the EU, and Nige will need to come out of retirement (again) to head up the UKIP ‘What bit of Leave didn’t you get?’ election campaign. And stand a good chance of being PM as a result.

Seems rather clever of a rat to leave a ship that’s sinking. Only sensible choice.
Last week at the minor pro-EU demo in London, someone held a banner “Rats leaving the sinking ship”. So if the EU is sinking, we’re best advised to get out while we can.
marc – the chap in that video sounds French. Chances are he works for a French financial services firm in London and is both irate and terrified at the prospect that it might move him back to Paris post-Brexit.
Where I live (Hong Kong) French expats would rather lose a limb than get posted back home.

So, what are we supposed to make of this? It would appear that Farage is that rara avis, a politician with a mission who, having accomplished it, steps out of the limelight to take a rest. When Cincinnatus returned to his plough having saved Rome, he was hailed a hero (so much so that the Yanks, who at one time knew their history, named an entire city after him.)
That IndescribablyPissPoor article was just whistling past the graveyard.
Sort of. The Society of Cincinnatus is the first veterans society for the new nation with considerable influence. When they founded the city, they name it after the Society, and Cincinnatus in turn.
Mr Ecks
Lets not forget Garibaldi–he of the biscuit fame–who claimed only a sack of corn for his efforts.
The remain scum have gone so far past corny in their marxistic wank-of-words that a bag of cheese–and dick-cheese at that– is all that they have to give.
Was this Douglas Adams reference just out-of-place laziness, or genuine? Nigel has helped to win back a whole lot of fish.
Both I hope. Certainly when I was campaigning for Vote “Leave” there was tremendous enthusiasm for restoring our fishing industry.
Without Nigel, I doubt that we would have been talking about that in this day and age.
Freedom from EU hegemony is such a relief, I just wish the Tories would get their fingers out of their collective arses and get on with BRExit (i.e. serve Article 50 and worry about let the EU worry about the 2-year time limit).
Jack C
But to what extent are our politicians now apprehensive about being in charge?
A key theme of Brexit whining has been Leave’s “broken promises”. They were possibilities not promises, obviously, but it is now true that UK politicians will have more options, and fewer opportunities to blame Brussels. Scary for the careerists.
Rob
” a politician with a mission who, having accomplished it, steps out of the limelight to take a rest. ”
Which explains the unique level of hatred he attracts.

“it is now true that UK politicians will have more options, and fewer opportunities to blame Brussels. Scary for the careerists.”
Particularly when the electorate is in a far less forgiving mode than when the UK was last run by its actual elected MPs. The chances of a long political career would be far lower in an independent UK now the ‘throw the bums out’ mood is pretty strong.
Just another positive to Brexit – if it scares off the careerists and we return to the older ‘putting something back in after a life outside of politics’ types that alone would be priceless.

Quitting at the top happens in sport occasionally e.g. Bobby Fisher ( chess ), Bill Johnson ( skiing ), so why not politics.
It’s been a long journey featuring characters like Goldsmith and the guy who presented ‘Share or Shaft’, and even Michael Foot and Nick Griffin to some extent. But Nigel of the Farage has been like the biggest girder of steel against the last half of the EU experiment to enforce minimum 75% equality of outcomes on us all, and he deserves to take a break from the stress. Happy retirement son.
I must have missed the bit where Nigel said “and I will resign as an MEP forthwith”
There are rumors that a hit operation in in motion from disgruntled Brussels goons – so jump before push – is an option here maybe…
Every single MEP I’ve dealt with (4 mebbe 5) has been an utter and complete waste of space – and many – have used the system to lavishly pad out their lives and enrich their chums – Caroline Lucas f’rinstance screwed the EU for millions….

‘Nigel Farage, the latest rat to jump from the sinking Brexit ship’
HMS Brexit is not sinking, it’s the other sides ships that are sliding gracefully to the bottom. HMS Brexit returns triumphantly to its home port.

The Guardian cartoon on Farage resigning was quite good I thought. Captured his look of satisfaction very well.

Perhaps they confused him with Roy Hodgson and Chris Evans
