It was on The Mrs Merton Show that she asked with straight face of Debbie McGee, the much younger wife of the magician Paul Daniels: “So, what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?”
That recurrent cancer finally caught up with her:
Caroline Aherne, who created, wrote and starred in the Royle Family, has died of cancer at the age of 52,
Definitely one of the most memorable jokes ever on British tv, up there with “Play it cool, Trig”.
I honestly preferred her line to Best: “Was it playing all that football that made you so thirsty?”
The only time I ever saw her on the telly was when she made that wonderful joke. Did we leave her out a few weeks ago when we listed genuinely comic women?
She was a great talent. The writing in The Royle Family is some of the sharpest, funniest and most keenly observed stuff ever seen on British television.
A clever and funny girl who always had a good humoured sparkle in her eyes.
Rest in peace.
dearieme, I think she was left out.
Shouldn’t have.
I was just thinking about her the other day in that context after her name was mentioned in some radio doco I was listening to on New Order (?).
She is definitely a top candidate for someone who can write and do funny.
Yes, rest in peace.
