Apparently Baron de Coubertin didn’t want women in the games:

“In the Olympic Games, their primary role should be to crown the victors.”

“Women should dress in white; just like all the other domestic appliances” – Bernie Ecclestone

One or both may have been joking 🙂

  3. Presumably it makes them the first married couple to do so, period? Or is there a mixed doubles in dressage or something?

The phrase “mixed doubles” comes from tennis.
But the only reason why Richard and Sandra Brown haven’t made it to an Olympics final is that the Olympics race walk is too short.

“now stop talking about same-sex married couples?”

To be fair it’s just a phase all social changes go through. I remember when it was newsworthy that we had our first female train driver after a lot of fuss to get her on the course*, as an example. There was even a lot of fuss when we got our first when we got our first female PM.

*With most of the objections coming from the train drivers’ unions.
