Idiot Olympics line of the day

Where One Olympic Medal Is Better Than None

By DAVID SEGAL
For all of their egalitarian aspirations, the Games are a lopsided affair. Most countries go home with no medals.

Olympics? Sport? The world’s largest outbreak of elitism has egalitarian aspirations?

Did they sponsor Fiji’s Rugby 7s team?
One of the few occasions where I was quite happy for GB to lose [well, yes, a GB win in the 100 or 200 metres would have been worrying, but I hope you understand].

  2. I’ve never understood why they just don’t divide up all the medals and give them out in proportion to the participating countries’ population.

  3. For as long as I can remember the games have been about national prestige, no sports.

Perhaps someone can confirm my observations. Locally the perception Olympic importance has dramatically dropped. I link the drop to the switch from Olympics every 4 years to alternating winter and summer games every two years. Because there are more frequent games they are viewed to be more commonplace and less interesting.

  4. Meat heads seeking public recognition for the job they chose to do, whist being funded by the public. Meh.

  5. The public also funds professional sports franchises. We could have run a government train line up McKnight Rd and saved thousands of hours of travel time for commuters but we got new stadia. Letting the people spend their own money would surely have provided other, most likely greater results.

However, as I live in Pittsburgh there are a few things to remember. Paint should go well with coal dust. The O’ word is the worst curse possible. Y’all ain’t a word but yinze guyz new at. And most importantly:

    GO STEELERS!!!

We should stop funding our elitist athletes with public money. Give Senegal a chance!

  7. Someone tweeted that the BBC had said something along the lines of “is our obsession with medals making us a poor man’s East Germany?”

Utterly stupid thing to ask anyway, but…

    The economics!

Modern UK in 2016 vs Communist Germany in the 80s. Erm… aren’t we several richer than they ever got? So how in blazes can we be a “poor man’s” DDR?

  8. Missed a word out while fist-typing:

Modern UK in 2016 vs Communist Germany in the 80s. Erm… aren’t we several TIMES richer than they ever got? So how in blazes can we be a “poor man’s” DDR?

You’re missing the point – most staff at the BBC devoutly wish we were the new DDR. And they’ll be campaigning for any British Castro or Chavez that can make that come true.

    Cynic,

Well, it’s ‘poor mans’ because at least the old commies cared about winning prestige events.
