How big will the sympathy vote be?

Hillary Clinton was on Sunday night facing serious questions about her health as she cancelled a campaign trip to California after admitting to suffer from pneumonia.

In what could be a major turning point in the bitterly contested presidential campaign, Mrs Clinton appeared to faint as she departed early from a ceremony honouring victims of the September 11 attacks at Ground Zero in New York City.

  1. Bloody good question that.

I mean, obviously the number of men who would vote on that basis is effectively 0, but, there is that other demographic that she’s been campaigning to win on the basis of “it’s a woman’s turn” and “it’s 2016! !”

The same group which votes for increases in government spending every time they’re unwisely allowed to vote (women, without property or marriage qualifications).

  2. How big will the sympathy vote be?

Alternatively, is this the point where the Establishment realises that she might not win, and resorts to Plan B?

(btw, I’m not suggesting for a moment that she’s not actually ill.)

  3. After the appaling treatment of McCain for being old and ill back in 2008, they’ve got some nerve…

    But we knew that…

  4. This damages her rather than is a boon, who can vote for a sickly CIC who literally ‘can’t stand the heat’?

    Trump to win.

  5. Sympathy: zero. Having denied she had health problems, she collapsed in New York yesterday, but denied it until a video showed up confirming it. Then Team Clinton said she was suffering from heatstroke, only for New Yorkers to point out that the morning in question was cool and breezy. Now they come out and say actually it wasn’t heatstroke and she is ill, but she has pneumonia. But look, here’s a “random” kid for her to hug as she leaves her daughter’s apartment. The lies just keep stacking up, don’t they?

  6. “Mrs Clinton appeared to faint as she departed early from a ceremony honouring victims of the September 11 attacks at Ground Zero in New York City.”

Yeah. Right. Why do I get the feeling a card got played there?
    (A trump?)

  7. I seem to be in a minority that thinks a Hillary Clinton presidency would be hilarious. The woman just can’t help telling stupid pointless lies.

Imagine the fun after St Barack. The left would devote a year or so to insisting that all criticisms of HRC were sexist. Then eventually she’d do something so stupid and/or crooked that even they would have to shut up.

Meanwhile Trump is just a racist protectionist; some things are true even though the Washington Post says they are true.

  8. Tim Newman: “The lies just keep stacking up, don’t they?”

And you’d think they had enough practice that they could at least produce believable ones.

  9. Tempting to imagine the bitch–like Dick 3 tormented the night before Bosworth–being visited daily by the shades of all the poor bastards she and Billyboy have had whacked over the years.

Bloodless and ghastly-grinning “the brains are out” Vince Foster, poor Mary J Mahoney, shot thro’ the heart, face and skull by Clinton Crime Family “robbers” (the type of robber who never take anything from those they murder while “robbing” them). The former Chef–all water-logged from being found weighted with stones in some river out in the wilderness. The list goes on and on.

It would be less a haunting and more of a Convention.

  10. “And you’d think they had enough practice that they could at least produce believable ones.”

She’s never had to; the press has always been there to Pressplain away whatever nonsense passes her lips.

  11. They don’t really do sympathy votes in the US. The TV stations will be awash with adverts saying she’s not healthy enough, just like what happened with John McCain (who apparently was going to be long dead by now).

  12. Tim Newman: ” Then Team Clinton said she was suffering from heatstroke, only for New Yorkers to point out that the morning in question was cool and breezy. “

Best Tweet of yesterday: “If Hillary thinks it’s hot here in New York today, she’s in for a big surprise after she’s dead!”

  13. Her sickness is unlikely to sway people to vote for Trump; but a good number of her erstwhile supporters just won’t bother turning out at all.

  14. It’s worth at least -5%

Americans don’t express sympathy for sick old ladies by putting them into one of the most punishing jobs in the world and giving them control over the planet’s deadliest war machine.

They also like their presidents to be able to have a bath without shitting in it.

  15. She has set up a goodish reason to demand that she should be seated for the TV debates with Trump. Or maybe even to back out.

  16. What decnine said. I said a few days ago that Clinton would seek to wriggle out of the debates by some means or other. A bout of ‘pneumonia’ will do nicely.

  17. Begging off the debates for medical reasons is the worst thing Clinton could do. It’s like not turning up to a job interview and expecting to get hired anyway.

The American public isn’t going to elect President Sicknote.

  18. They’re showing the video of Clinton collapsing in New York on sky news. That’s not something I thought they would do.

  19. “Begging off the debates for medical reasons is the worst thing Clinton could do. It’s like not turning up to a job interview and expecting to get hired anyway.

The American public isn’t going to elect President Sicknote.”

And people laughed at Clint Eastwood’s empty chair gag…

  20. Charlie Suet – “Meanwhile Trump is just a racist protectionist; some things are true even though the Washington Post says they are true.”

There is no evidence Trump is racist at all.

Most things the media says about Republicans are not remotely true. Especially about Trump. They are also lying to protect the b!tch. Stumbled? Tripped? No she did not do either of those things. She collapsed.

The smearing of ordinary voters were bad enough, but being a feeble, snobbish elitist is probably not an election winner.

  21. SMFS: “That fascist fuck will have us all swinging from nooses” screams President Sicknote.

Bwwaahhaawaahahahahahahah–etc–at such length that the Joker himself would have to cry halt–can the crazy cow really believe such?

President Ecks possibly but Trump is gonna hang the liberal-left en masse???

Her mind is as sick if not sicker than her body.

  22. “Mrs Clinton appeared to faint”: I’ve seen a claim that calling it a “faint” is a clever bit of spin. Was it a seizure? A collapse? What’s the best noun? A “tumble” seems miles off.

And what the Hellary was the bit of metal that fell out of her trouser leg?

As for “pneumonia”, how serious must her real condition be that people would try to minimise it by pleading pneumonia?

It’s a wonderful world where you learn more truth from nutcase websites than from the “MSM” (merde-soaked media).

  23. Lance ==)---------------

I didn’t see her collapse and haven’t been following her symptoms (is it even possible to find an objective report?) If she really has pneumonia, I feel for her. I’ve had it three times, one time resulting in a ten-day hospital stay (I’d never seen ER staff move so fast before!).

That said, one of the practical but little discussed functions of the grueling campaign process is to cull weaklings. If you can’t hack campaigning, you’re not strong enough to handle the highest-stress job in the world, 24×1461.

OTOH, Charlie Suet’s comments above offer the only ray of hope in an election where both major party candidates seem intent on proving that a bad enough president *can* do lasting damage to the country.

  24. bif, her symptoms are consistent with Parkinson’s disease.

No, I’m not a doctor. But I don’t need to be to see the obvious.

  25. dearieme: “And what the Hellary was the bit of metal that fell out of her trouser leg?”

Interesting that someone snapped a photo (purporting to be) of the shoe she left behind, but not this object.

  26. I should add, if indeed she has Parkinson’s, a Trump debate will put her under heavy stress. A Parkinson’s patient under heavy stress will do bizarre things. Her handlers MUST prevent a debate.

I should have included that her symptoms include side effects from the standard drug used to treat Parkinson’s, levodopa.

    ============================

    From drugs.com:

    levodopa Side Effects

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:
    More common

Abnormal thinking: holding false beliefs that cannot be changed by fact
    agitation
    anxiety
    clenching or grinding of teeth
    clumsiness or unsteadiness
    confusion
    difficulty swallowing
    dizziness
    excessive watering of mouth
    false sense of well being
    feeling faint
general feeling of discomfort or illness
hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there)
    hand tremor, increased
    nausea or vomiting
    numbness
unusual and uncontrolled movements of the body, including the face, tongue, arms, hands, head, and upper body
    unusual tiredness or weakness

    ===================================

Note that her severe coughing spasms could be the result of swallowing problems, a common problem for levodopa users.

dearieme – “As for “pneumonia”, how serious must her real condition be that people would try to minimise it by pleading pneumonia?”

CNN is just grossly spinning this for the cow. They claim that it is sexism and ageism to question her health. Which is remarkable because they remember what they did and said to McCain. However if it was pneumonia what the hell was she doing playing with the cute little photo op outside her daughter’s building? What was she doing playing with her grandchildren? Pneumonia can be infectious. Not that the media would ever question her about it.

If they knew she was sick, with pneumonia, why did they let her go in the first place and then why did they lie about it when it happened? Heat stroke? Seriously?

The BBC is now doing its best to spin this – a grandmother, a human being blah blah blah.

  28. So Much For Subtlety

Mr Ecks – “Her mind is as sick if not sicker than her body.”

Yeah but she knows she belongs in prison. That is the real state of her conscience speaking. She knows she deserves to swing.

  29. Gamecock
I’ve heard the Parkinsons rumour too.
But, given that she’d lie about buying a packet of pasta, I think it’s a side effect of a drug for something more serious.
    Google search
    False sense of entitlement
    Grandiosity
    Incapable of remembering people’s names
    etc

You could narrow down the drug regime if you had a better computer than mine.

  30. It’s striking that the whole thing would presumably have been covered up but for a couple of passers-by. No one from the media had bothered to keep tabs on what was going on.

Or alternatively: it was all a set up, their way of avoiding the debates, or withdrawing from the race, or whatever. The “passers-by” were pre-arranged to happen along.

  31. As I am voting for Johnson anyway it doesn’t affect my vote. I know I am in the group the media doesn’t pander to, the relatively sane ones, so obviously my opinion doesn’t mean anything. Here it is anyway.

Hillary I am sorry to hear you are not well. As we all die at some point I hope you take the time to ensure your grandchild has quality memories. When he reaches your age those will be what he cherishes the most.

  32. Or alternatively: it was all a set up, their way of avoiding the debates, or withdrawing from the race, or whatever. The “passers-by” were pre-arranged to happen along.

She (or her campaign team) must be really bricking it if they think feigning incapacity due to illness is a better strategy than spending a couple of hours debating The Donald.

  33. Gamecock: ‘Abnormal thinking: holding false beliefs that cannot be changed by fact

    anxiety
    clenching or grinding of teeth
    confusion
    false sense of well being
hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there)
    numbness’

Aren’t all those things just ‘signs you might be a Democrat politician’..?

  34. @BiW: who knows the truth when the Clintons are involved? They’re the kind of people who’ll bomb a country to distract attention from an inconvenience.

  35. So Much For Subtlety

dearieme – “It’s striking that the whole thing would presumably have been covered up but for a couple of passers-by. No one from the media had bothered to keep tabs on what was going on.”

Journolist’s successor is clearly at work because all the major media outlets are spinning the same line – she is “pushing through” apparently. Just like every other hard working struggling mother. The media’s job is covering for the Democrats in general and for the Clintons in particular.

What is striking to me is that they took her to Chelsea’s apartment. If my grandmother collapsed, I would take her straight to the ER. They did not take her to a hospital. So they knew what it was, they were prepared for it and not frightened, they knew it would pass and it was not life threatening. They then lied.

    So what is it?

  36. What is it? Presumably Parkinson’s or the like.

Whatever it is, it would presumably become public knowledge fairly swiftly if they took her to a hospital. It would be hard to keep a haphazard assembly of doctors and nurses quiet.
