Idiot twattery

The other more compelling argument is that we live in a society where men dominate every pillar of power, from parliament to the economy to the media. Men crowd out the voices of women systematically, including on issues that directly affect women. No wonder women end up disproportionately affected by policies such as cuts to social security.

If cuts in government handouts disproportionately affect women then women, before the cuts, must be disproportionately getting the government handouts.

How’s that for a male dominated society.

  1. “If cuts in government handouts disproportionately affect women then women, before the cuts, must be disproportionately getting the government handouts.”

As a matter of logic, that would be true only if the percentage cuts were the same for all benefits – ie the cuts
weren’t larger for benefits that women disproportionately claim.

  2. “…so-called “virtue-signalling” – that is, men who self-identify as left-wing demonstrating how “right on” they are for political brownie points. And yes, there are such men who exist…”

Who’d argue? One’s writing this very column!

  3. @ Julia M- my thoughts exactly when I read that. Good job I’ve a sense of humour: being lectured by Owen on virtue signalling would have made me vomit otherwise.

As to Pat’s point- I’m struggling to see where women are being held back- they run the public sector, that’s for sure

“I’m struggling to see where women are being held back- they run the public sector, that’s for sure”

The Govt project where I was a technical adviser had 3 women as project leads over its lifetime. Each one was on the civil service fast track program and getting experience of an infrastructure project. Their boss was a woman and her boss, the Permanent Secretary, was a woman. For a large part of the program the Secretary of State was a woman.

That wasn’t unusual for what I saw of other projects and departments.

  5. Women have demonstrated over the last 30 years that they are not, as a gender, the equal of men. A few exceptional individuals rise to the level of top male performance but in general, women simply aren’t capable of performing as well as men, in ANY role. If they were, they would already be in top roles without the need for gender quotas, SJW campaigns and all the other thumb-on-the-scale devices they use to lift mediocre performers into ‘top’ ranks.

  6. BiND: “For a large part of the program the Secretary of State was a woman.”

Replaced, or did she ‘transition’? Given it’s the civil service it’s hard to know…

  7. “No wonder women end up disproportionately affected by policies such as cuts to social security.”

It would be a travesty if Wonder Woman had her social security payments stopped.

Invisible aircraft don’t pay for their own maintenance you know.

  8. The media? How much blokeish TV is there on the BBC nowadays? Top Gear? Match of the Day? The rest is all for women – Bake Off, Strictly, soaps, hospital dramas, comedy shows being told they have to have a woman on.

  9. ” I’m struggling to see where women are being held back- they run the public sector, that’s for sure”

Why do you think its such a mess? Men have left the building by and large in the State sector now. The only ones left are the manginas like Owen who are useless anyway. Thats why the State sector is fucked, its entirely staffed by people for whom hard work, production and efficiency are dirty words.

  10. Incidentally, I rewrote Owens tag lines for him to see if they fitted another burning issue of the day:

“Not all Muslims commit terrorism. But all must condemn it”

“Muslim terrorism against Western society is rife – and it’s getting worse. We need a new, inclusive form of Islam to eliminate it”

    Somehow I don’t think he’d write that.

  11. “men dominate every pillar of power”

Including our Head of State, Head of Government, Lord Chancellor and Home Secretary?

  12. I hadn’t seen OJ for a while – but just when you thought Mason’s Column on Bankers with the Ede and Ravenscroft pic had hit a new low, he smashes through it without effort. I hate to break it to him – Owen, I’d love to add my voice to yours on Twitter, but you’ve blocked me, along with 30,000 other ‘trolls’……

  13. The problem of male violence against women is largely down to women choosing violent mates and then expecting the rest of society to protect them from their poor decisions. You can’t have your cake and eat it.

  14. Its amazing, really. The cuts have been reported to affect pretty much every group more than others.
You would almost think people were using ‘cuts’ to support the particular political narrative they are trying to convey.

Misses entirely any efficiency, planned changes, end of funding streams, local political decisions or people wanting to not pay extra themselves.
Right council cutting services, people unhappy, council instead puts council tax up by 25%. People happy now? No they would scream murder.

  15. “Thats why the State sector is fucked, its entirely staffed by people for whom hard work, production and efficiency are dirty words.”

Amusingly, this reminds me of when I worked for a company that was on the edge of the civil service. We were taking some work in house and proposed reporting on how long it was taking for tasks to be completed.

We were told in no uncertain terms that they didn’t want to see any reporting on individual staff as they didn’t want people to think they were being monitored and didn’t want to highlight where people were doing a good job in case it made others feel bad.

Never mind that the people who were performing well could teach the others better ways to do things and lead to a general increase in productivity – we couldn’t make anyone feel at all bad.

  16. Owen Jones is well placed to lecture me about my unreconstructed masculinity because his has been and because I imagine his mum still buys his clothes.

  17. TMB

Laughed out loud at that one! The article itself is dismal even by his standards – is there any bandwagon he won’t hitch himself to you. Possibly the only contemporary journalist even more stupid than Murphy…..

    Julia,

The SoS was Maria Miller and having met her and Sen her in action she is a nasty cow. Had no dealings with the PS.

  19. @John Square, they’ve also had almost exclusive access to educating the last couple of generations, and the lion’s share of parenting and what did that lead to? Rape culture and social media abusers!
