Beer contains calories? Who knew?

People in the UK and many other countries get more of their calories from alcohol than from sugary drinks like cola and lemonade, according to new data which suggests that tackling Britain’s drink problem may be more important for health than cracking down on sugar consumption.

Of 24 countries tracked by the data analysts Euromonitor International, all but one have higher daily calorie consumption from alcoholic drinks than sugary beverages. In the UK, adults are consuming more than 106 calories per head every day from alcoholic drinks, compared with 98 from sugar-sweetened drinks.

And therefore there must be labeling and a strategy to reduce consumption and so on.

The thing is that we already restrict alcohol consumption to adults. you know, those we judge competent to make up their own minds?

At which point the prodnoses can fuck off, can’t they?

And for added points we can note that if this is true of most countries then this is normal, isn’t it?

  1. “Most people are unaware that alcohol can make you gain weight…because the calorific value is not marked on the tin.”

I doubt there’s a woman in Britain that doesn’t know the exact number of calories in every drink they consume, and every guy I share a pint with appreciates the correlation between drinking five glasses of Guinness every night and their waist line. You don’t have to spell it out on the bar towel.

  2. The only crackdown needed is on pseudo-puritan shite.

I don’t sully my eyesight with shite like the Gladrag but are all those Gubmint jobs still in there? The ones Camoron promised to stop?

Most people are unaware that alcohol can make you gain weight…because the calorific value is not marked on the tin.

The veranda over the toy shop is called a “beer belly” why?

  4. The only soft drink I ever consume is slimline tonic.

I’m happy getting a significant proportion of my daily calories from alcohol, I’d certainly rather have that large glass of red wine than the doughnut.

  5. The veranda over the toy shop

You mean the roof over the toolshed 🙂

Hang on, this article is based on a 106 vs 98 calorie per head per day comparison. How is that significant to, well, anything? Even if you had both it’s a pretty miniscule amount to really care about. And if the idea is to show one is worse than the other you’ve just failed badly.

  6. “Most people are unaware that alcohol can make you gain weight…because the calorific value is not marked on the tin.”

A deliberate lie to encourage the State to begin an ‘education program’, which will be in fact a coordinated campaign of harassment against anyone who dares drink alcohol, and intended as a base camp for future battles in the war to prohibit it altogether.

106 calories is about half a pint of beer. They are soiling themselves over half a pint. As moral panics go, it is shithouse.

  7. Euromonitor’s nutrition data also shows that the average daily consumption of calories in the world is 1,398 calories, with the lowest amount in India at 761 calories per capita per day

What?! 761 calories per day in India? Bullshit. Is there a famine going on there at the moment?

  8. “Most people are unaware that alcohol can make you gain weight…because the calorific value is not marked on the tin.”

Well I suppose draught beer down the pub will get a slight boost from that, if only to get away from the idea that nothing can be known unless pre-chewed by the government.

  9. “Most people are unaware that alcohol can make you gain weight…because the calorific value is not marked on the tin.”

Failed: government schools. Put labels on EVERYTHING with information government schools failed to teach.

  10. My God! Beer has calories in it? Does Jamie Oliver know about this? They should impose a tax upon this wicked beverage immediately. Or hit upon some other novel way to stop us enjoying ourselves: http://bit.ly/2bA7GY1

Ltw is right: 8 calories is about 1100 mg of butter, or a twelfth of a tablespoon. This can be filed under “don’t give a shit”.

  12. You’d imbibe eight calories just smelling a mature Brie from twenty yards.

Total non-story, but the fanatics know that a non-story a day keeps reason away.
