Umm, how?

Calais’s refugee children are sleeping rough because of Tory policy

They’re in France aren’t they? Where the policies of the Tory government hold little sway.

  1. “The French ambassador to the UK, Sylvie Bermann, disclosed earlier this week that the government rejected a request to take all the lone child refugees to Britain before the camp closure began.”

I’m beginning to warm to Teresa May. She seems to have what Cameron lacked: balls.

  2. How comes the people demanding that we accept refugees from France aren’t also demanding that we send food packages or doctors to France, or even intervene militarily to stop the terrible war and/or genocide that’s happening there?

  3. Theo: “If history has taught us one thing it is that fear of the other is always irrational. “

Tell that to Swedish and German rape victims…

It hasn’t taught the writer anything.

  5. Rough sleeping? Some would call it camping. Plenty of British families go camping in France for their holidays. These young men are just the Asian and African version of the Interrailing backpacker.

  6. I cannot see the comments on this opinion piece. There isn’t even the standard ‘Comments are closed’ message.

    It can’t be news, surely.

  7. Subtle change in tone on the 10 o’clock news last night. It’s gone from being to children, to children and young people who are now at risk. The ridicule is getting to them.

Basically these guys chose not to get on the coaches to the new centres. It’s their own fault.

  8. Rob, that’s now SoP at the ‘Guardian’ – they had an editorial a few weeks back where they announced that ‘sensitive’ articles would no longer be opened to comment.

Probably to protect the moderators from RSI.

Some are determined to come to Britain and since this French policy is one of redistributing the economic migrants across various parts of France, this would scupper that goal.

Don’t the French have child social services?

The costs of picking up the tab for genuine child migrants (rather than men posing as children) would be enormous. Far better to do a galic shrug and ignore the problem so that the Rosbif’s end up picking up the tab.

Far better to reserve such spending for French children.

The Inimitable Steve once again causes LOLing in me that actually involves Laughing Out Loud.

I wish you could search Tim’s comment archives by commenter to get the Collected Works of TiS. It would be a compendium of meilleurs mots (as opposed to mere bons mots).
