How is bacon racist?

Two men who threw rashers of bacon inside a north London mosque in a racially motivated attack have been jailed for eights months.

Mateusz Pawlikowski, 22, and Piotr Czak-Zukowski, 28, walked into Al-Rahman Mosque in north London as worshippers were getting ready for evening prayer.

Pawlikowski approached one of them, swore at him, and threw a rasher of bacon towards him, continuing to throw further rashers on the floor of the prayer room.

Behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace I can see, yes. But racism? How can we have race when talking about a religion?

  1. Throwing rashers of bacon into a mosque is quite obviously anti-Muslim, which under our laws counts as racist. But it most certainly isn’t an attack. Nobody was even touched.

  2. I wonder if this will be brought up as a post-Brexit hate crime by all those Poles the BBC and grauniad manage to interview.

  3. I’m convinced Muslims would be better humoured and less blowy uppy and stabby if they knew the joys of a bacon butty.

  4. I was attacked in the street once and the assailant did not spend one day in prison – this is an appalling double standard.

  5. Online, the reaction to Mr Memettur has been intense, often descending into derogatory comments and insulting jokes about Muslims and Uighur culture.

Excellent; a culture that can’t take a bit of abuse is not worth defending.

It has also highlighted how gaps in understanding between Muslim minorities and the Han Chinese majority can arise.

As SE points out, if the Muslims don’t understand their own religious proscriptions, why should the Chinese bother?

  6. I visited a shoe factory once and it was full of Uighurs, several thousand of them, cheapest labour you see. I went back the next year and they were all gone. I asked why and was told ‘they’re too much trouble so we got rid of all of them’. They don’t fuck around in China.

Muslim guy I used to work with loved nothing more than a bacon butty, just don’t tell his imam.

Reminds me of a similar story told me by a friend who worked in Japan in Nagasaki – apparently his then girlfriend’s Japanese father was a local bigwig. At the time there were a substantial Pakistani contingent working the docks who were agitating for local restaurants to all be made Halal. They were told in no uncertain terms that if they didn’t like it ‘This was Japan, not Pakistan’ and the option for them to head home was always open….. Only in the West do we tamely surrender. The treatment meted out to an Olympic medallist is disgraceful.

Probably turned them into shoe leather.

  10. “But racism? How can we have race when talking about a religion?”

To anyone with half a brain, we can’t. It’s a set of ideas, a belief system. Islam is clearly not a race.

I would say this indicates public sector stupidity, but I think in this case it is something far worse: the intention being to oppress.

  11. Littering and wasting food.

Prison seems entirely fair, but the affect is spoiled by dressing it up as something else.

  12. “I asked why and was told ‘they’re too much trouble so we got rid of all of them’. They don’t fuck around in China.”

    Nor in the U.S.

American workers show their butts; employers hire non-Americans. American workers haven’t figured out that pervasive Federal regulations that “protect” them make them unemployed.

  13. It’s a set of ideas, a belief system.

You are far too generous. ‘Bollocks’ is I believe the single word that most neatly sums up the ravings on which the whole farrago is based.

  14. “But racism? How can we have race when talking about a religion?”

Because the people who run the country have chosen to share a particular delusion, and to ruthlessly persue and ruin anyone who chooses to express an opinion to the contrary.

Anyway, did the police give these people a good grilling?

  15. Muslim reaction to a couple of chopsy Poles:

‘I genuinely believed my life was in danger.’
The caretaker said although he has a ‘strong character’ he was left ‘traumatised and crushed’ by the incident.

Good to know we’ve only imported the precious snowflakes and not the headchopping wife murdering paedophile ones, isn’t it?

    Lest we forget:

‘Until we can stem and eventually extirpate that pernicious and irrational fear, we shall remain a guilty society. But it is not only our society that is guilty,” he shouted, as his audience began scraping back their chairs and making for the doors and windows. Too late. Dr Kiosk was already shouting: “WE ARE ALL GUILTY!”

“But racism? How can we have race when talking about a religion?”

When I asked this question on BBC forums when the race hate laws were being passed through Parliament there was lots of wavy hand type explanations which boiled down to:

    – Jews are a race and it wouldn’t be fair if Muslims weren’t protected by the upcoming race hate laws and

    – It couldn’t be about religion because then SJWs would have to defend and protect Christians

The far east is probably going to be the best place to run to when Europe and the West falls to Islam. The Japanese are quite open about their desire to maintain a racially and culturally homogenous society.

  19. Tomsmith,

If you are a Japanese expat then yes, Japan is a good place to run to. The rest of us won’t be welcome though.

  20. “The far east is probably going to be the best place to run to when Europe and the West falls to Islam. The Japanese are quite open about their desire to maintain a racially and culturally homogenous society.”

Yeah, just a shame we aren’t one of them.

  21. Given the west is fucked, we classical liberals should homestead Antarctica. Even given the geographical disadvantages we would still make a more prosperous society given the Fuckwits running/ruining our current states.

  22. @Dongguan John
An inspired suggestion. Immeasurably more practical than Mars but sufficiently remote. Terraform the place under domes.
One’d need nukes, though. “Fuck with us & we’ll render the northern hemisphere uninhabitable”.

  23. So if an Englishman turned up at a Welsh rugby game and started throwing lamb chops around he’s liable to 8 years in prison?

  24. He’s liable to 8 weeks in hospital, more likely.

At a rugby match? Unlikely, but he would be subjected to a couple of hours of merciless piss taking.

I’ve not thrown lamb chops around, but I always wear my England shirt to the local pub on 6 Nations match days.

  25. > Jews are a race and it wouldn’t be fair if Muslims weren’t protected by the upcoming race hate laws

Well, as I keep telling atheists, a religion is not in fact a set of beliefs; it is a group of people. But people in a group have two attributes: those that they choose and those that are innate. So throwing bacon at someone you know to have a bacon allergy should be punished. Throwing bacon at someone who chooses to object to bacon, not so much. This seems to me like a very easy distinction for the law to make.

Jews are perfectly capable of making this distinction. Does anyone seriously think anyone’s going to be arrested — let alone subject to death threats — for tearing a page out of a Torah? Whereas the cartoons of hook-nosed and befanged drooling Israelis we increasingly see are obviously nothing to do with beliefs and everything to do with physical attributes and imagined racial conspiracy.

This “Jews are a race” thing has led to all sorts of muddy thinking and nonsense. Jews are a people, self-defined in various ways. When they arrived in Europe, Europe revolved around religion, so the Europeans projected that onto the Jews. In the Eighteenth Century, when Europeans started to become obsessed with the “science” of race, they projected that onto the Jews. But both the religion and the race are European concepts, not Jewish ones. Jews are a people, with a millenia-long history of understanding what a Jew is that predates having European misunderstandings foisted onto them. This is part of why antisemitism is different to racism — and why Corbyn’s Pavlovian inability to hear the word “antisemitism” without blurting “and all forms of racism” is in itself somewhat antisemitic.

I suspect Europeans are now making similar errors in their understanding of Arabs and Muslims. Modern Islam is not like Twentieth-Century Christianity, so it’s silly to pretend it is.
