I don’t think they’ve quite got Gamergate here, not understood it

It’s understandable that the world didn’t much care about Gamergate. The 2014 hashtag campaign, ostensibly founded to protest about perceived ethical failures in games journalism, clearly thrived on hate – even though many of those who aligned themselves with the movement either denied there was a problem with harassment, or wrote it off as an unfortunate side effect. Sure, women, minorities and progressive voices within the industry were suddenly living in fear. Sure, those who spoke out in their defence were quickly silenced through exhausting bursts of online abuse. But that wasn’t why people supported it, right? They were disenfranchised, felt ignored, and wanted to see a systematic change.

Is this all sounding rather familiar now? Does it remind you of something? If you’re just discovering the world of angry, anonymous online dudes masquerading as victims – hi, come in. Some of us have been here for a while.

The similarities between Gamergate and the far-right online movement, the “alt-right”, are huge, startling and in no way a coincidence. After all, the culture war that began in games now has a senior representative in The White House. As a founder member and former executive chair of Brietbart News, Steve Bannon had a hand in creating media monster Milo Yiannopoulos, who built his fame and Twitter following by supporting and cheerleading Gamergate. This hashtag was the canary in the coalmine, and we ignored it.

The way I read Gamergate was rather the other way around. It was a revolt by normal people against the po-faced cunts insisting upon the usual SJW nonsenses wasn’t it?

Yeah, I agree with your reading of it. Games journalists rating games on the basis of how much they aligned with the SJW narrative rather than how fun they were to play. Plus manufacturers paying journalists for 5 star ratings. Plus that woman (Zoe Quinn? Or the other one?) who won the award after sleeping with 3 of the 5 judges. Gamers reacted to this. Journalists claimed they were all racist, sexist, homophobic etc. The feminists who made their names from it were claiming they were being attacked by trolls. Turns out a lot of those trolls’ comments that they screenshotted were from accounts linked to… the women themselves (d’oh!). Meanwhile gamers were also being attacked and harassed (often by the same trolls) but this was not being reported on making it all look one sided.

Key thing to realise about gamergate was that it was gamers versus journalists. And most people were getting their info about it from journalists. Not the most unbiased of sources given the context.

  2. it depends who you class as “Gamergaters”. The ethically deprived, the gamers who struck back, or the twattermob who turned up demanding that young (mostly) men must only be allowed to enjoy themselves in SJW approved ways.

Judging economically, the last are the winners. Intel’s $300m “Diversity in Technology” will pay good wages to a whole bunch of otherwise unemployable race/sex/gender/fuck-knows hustlers and “diversity consultants”.

  3. From the quote:
“This hashtag was the canary in the coalmine, and we ignored it.”

Is the implication that if only they’d squashed gamer gate, through whatever means, we’d not have had Trump?

And is there also the implication that next time, they will act more decisively?

  4. As if Rational wiki is an ‘unbiased’ source of course! seems to be as you say, Tim – these guys challenged the prevailing narrative of minorities as victims and that is ‘hate speech’, ‘microaggression’, ‘encouraging bigotry’ and that, in contemporary Britain, is a serious crime. The sooner people such as the author above can be taxed and encouraged to leave these shores for climates like Zimbabwe, North Korea, Cuba or Venezuela the better….

  5. “…women, minorities and progressive voices within the industry were suddenly living in fear.”

If my eyes roll any harder, I’m seriously afraid they’ll fall out of my head…

  6. This is a war which we must win or we are on the slope towards losing the lot.

And again the whine that various female leftist scum received death threats.

150 million actual murders by socialism–listen to the crickets. Supposed nasty remarks to female leftist trash –the most empty set of threats since Hitler’s table-talk in the bunker–pump up the volume.

I agree with others as to the esp strident and militant tone of the delusional cunts of the left at this time.

The war against middle-class Marxism is on. We had best win it.

  7. “150 million actual murders by socialism – listen to the crickets. Supposed nasty remarks to female leftist trash – the most empty set of threats since Hitler’s table-talk in the bunker – pump up the volume.”

The Left summed up. Thanks Ecksy.

  8. All opposition to SJW cultural cleansing is ‘hate’. Anything except total obedience to the Narrative is ‘hate’. Even then that is sometimes not enough.

The people smashing up property and rioting, the people issuing death threats to opponents, the spittle-flecked crazies screaming in demonstrations, the unthinking mob of Twitter drones who descend on any deviation from the Narrative – this isn’t ‘hate’.

  9. Gamergate is what happens when the identitarian politics of the left are adopted by people on the right.

Milo and his twitter rabble are the mirror image of the “SJWs” (a now much overused term) that they rail against.

  10. Sandman–And people who rail against Marxist mass-murderers are themselves mass murderers except for not having murdered anybody by reason of not approving of murder. But they’re just as bad because…..errr……

    Listen to yourself.

  11. You can’t fight lunatics with reason and argument, anymore than you can fight a panzer division by playing tennis. If the other side aren’t interested in reason and argument, on what grounds do you fight them?

  12. The Inimitable Steve

    It was, Tim.

I played a tiny part in Gamergate myself, because I’ve been gaming since Daley Thompson’s Decathalon was the hot new thing on the ZX Spectrum and was annoyed to learn from sites like Kotaku and Eurogamer that I’m actually a spotty, misogynistic teenager curating a crusty sock collection in his Mum’s basement who needs to be lectured about feminism and trans rights by computer game journos.

Sure, women, minorities and progressive voices within the industry were suddenly living in fear.

    Muahahahaha! General Pinochet: Helicopter Simulator.

Lest we forget, Gamergate was an online movement that effectively began because a man wanted to punish his ex girlfriend.

Nah. The sudden, unanimous media censorship after the Zoe Quinn (a sociopath who was blowing journos to cover her incredibly shitty “game”) story broke was Gamergate’s Battle of the Marne, but tensions had been building for years.

In brief, the games press used to be fun, because games are meant to be fun. In the 80’s and 90’s it used to be joyously piss-taking young gamers who wrote for the likes of C&VG, Your Sinclair, and Digitiser. And remember Dominik Diamond and Sir Patrick Moore’s gloriously juvenile Gamesmaster? Good times.

By the early 2010’s though, the gaming press had changed. It was Dutschke’d by a long mince of SJW’s through the institutions. Jokes about Mario’s Italian sausage were out, ostensible reviews of the likes of Far Cry bemoaning “toxic masculinity” and “whiteness” were in.

Gamers, many of whom are, in fact, autistic nerds who just want to be left alone to enjoy their hobby, found this stuff really gripped their shit.

  13. The inimitable Steve:

You’re spot on as ever – as the late Peter Simple said of a Marxist infiltration of the oft admired Mebyon Kernow ‘ they really do seem to get everywhere’. I too remember C&VG and Your Sinclair (They might still be in the attic somewhere). The urge to politicise every aspect of human existence really is one which needs to be opposed. Why people cannot be left alone to enjoy what is (or certainly was) a harmless pastime is beyond the comprehension of the majority of the non SJW population.

‘Muahahahaha! General Pinochet: Helicopter Simulator’ –

that again made me laugh out loud to general office bemusement. I wonder if a BASIC game with that title might be possible based on my rusty programming knowledge…..

  14. From the excerpt:

Sure, women, minorities and progressive voices within the industry were suddenly living in fear. Sure, those who spoke out in their defence were quickly silenced through exhausting bursts of online abuse.

The notion that women and minorities were on the other side to gamergaters is to play identity politics. There were women and minority gamers, journalists and games designers who were just as unhappy as anyone else about cosy relationships between some journalists and games companies, and about the never-ending noise from some quarters that games designers had to start including token diverse characters rather than those moaning actually making or commissioning games themselves.

Women and minorities who supported efforts to push back against corrupt journalism and tokenism were frequently shouted down by progressives as ‘sock puppets’.

  15. Mal Reynolds and The Inimitable Steve are about right.

The problem here is that the gaming press are basically terrible. A friend of mine writes games for money and said that he phoned up sites about doing a review, and the first thing is “have you spoken to our advertising department”.

But like the rest of the lying media, they have, to a large extent, been disintermediated. The user ratings on Steam games are a pretty good guide to whether a game is worth playing.

You can generally see people heading into Fucked Company territory when they start palling up with the likes of the Guardian (see also: black cab drivers).

  16. “Zoe Quinn (a sociopath who was blowing journos to cover her incredibly shitty “game”)”

That’s the thing, Steve. That never actually happened. Nobody she slept with wrote anything about her game (actually more of an interactive memoir). Everything that Nathan Grayson wrote about it was before he dated her. Even the guy who wrote the original girlfriend-blaming post agreed that there was no question of sexual favours for coverage.

  17. Milo and his twitter rabble are the mirror image of the “SJWs” (a now much overused term) that they rail against.

Well, unfortunately, it takes a mob to beat a mob. Tit for tat is the only way to change their behavior.

  18. “It was a revolt by normal people against the po-faced cunts insisting upon the usual SJW nonsenses wasn’t it?”

No, not in any way, shape, or form. It’s just po-faced cunts who get upset about it, but Gamergate itself was a bunch of disgusting young teenage boys behaving in the kind of ways that led the British to invent public schools as a way of locking the little scrotes away from society during puberty.

  19. Have you done enough to earn your Honorary SJW bullshiter badge yet Dave?

The 6 Cornflakes tops went in to Kellogs obviously.

They’ll be a job for you at the LSE any time you care to give them a call. Just show the badge and you’re in.

  20. 150 million actual murders by socialism–listen to the crickets. Supposed nasty remarks to female leftist trash –the most empty set of threats since Hitler’s table-talk in the bunker–pump up the volume.

Same reason for this as animal rights nutters throwing paint on fur wearers, but not bikers wearing leather.
One results in the activist upsetting someone, the other and the activist gets kerb stomped…
Much safer to harangue nice people who won’t smash your face in when provoked.

  21. C_D>

That’s a typical Ecksian fantasy you’re quoting there. To call the various crimes that Gamergaters were convicted of ‘supposed nasty remarks’ is simply and utterly mendacious. The horrible little scrotes were doing things like calling in SWAT teams to false reports of ‘home invasions’ and the like. They were showing up outside peoples’ houses, dressed in masks and carrying weapons, having threatened to abduct and rape those people. It was a series of vile crimes by teenage boys engaging in, but going way beyond the usual, obnoxiousness that comes with puberty.

  22. Can you post a link to any of the ‘various crimes that Gamergaters were convicted of’? Google turns up nothing (and not even the ‘Rationalwiki’ link posted above suggests there were any.)

  23. “Gamergate itself was a bunch of disgusting young teenage boys behaving in the kind of ways that led the British to invent public schools as a way of locking the little scrotes away from society during puberty.”

So you think that the sort of teenge boy who plays computer games is the sort of teenage boy who used to get sent to Eton? What a bizarre little mind you have.

“The horrible little scrotes were doing things like calling in SWAT teams to false reports of ‘home invasions'”

Really? Evidence? (That, I note, is a tactic the left has been engaging in recently.)

  24. “I played a tiny part in Gamergate myself, because I’ve been gaming since Daley Thompson’s Decathalon was the hot new thing on the ZX Spectrum”

Did you manage to wreck the keyboard membrane like me, or did you use the Kempston Joystick?

  25. The first of my two jobs between school and uni involved repairing Spectrums in Dundee (but not for Timex.) There were essentially three repairs.

    1. Trim the keyboard connector.
    2. Replace the keyboard.
    3. Replace the motherboard.

Even the latter was about 1/3 the cost of a new Speccie, iirc.

  26. “Oh, what a surprise, Ecksy likes teenage boys2

So Dave –recalling to mind the long gone Cornflake box top era–mostly gone with the 1960s= a liking for teenage boys??

We see your evidence processes at work and it pretty much says enough.

You left out anti-Semitism BTW. Odd what with the obvious links.

  27. @Matthew L,
“That never actually happened. Nobody she slept with wrote anything about her game (actually more of an interactive memoir). ”

Is demonstrably false. She had a relationship with a journalist who mentioned her game favorably. The only debate is if the mentions happened before they started sleeping together or while they were “good friends”

  28. Philip Scott Thomas

    …media monster Milo Yiannopoulos…

So the homo-fabulous Milo is a monster now? OK, forgive me for tuning out and regarding everything you’ve ever written ever as bullshit. You are dead to me. Fuck off and die of face cancer.

  29. Assuming Matthew L’s link is true:

Actually threatening people in real life (not just mean tweets) is bang out of order, and these kids should have been pulled up on it. I don’t know what Milo’s role was in all this, but the only appropriate one would have been to tell the kids to grow up and stop behaving like spoiled & entitled brats. We’ve all come across SJWs we’d like to slap round the face with a wet kipper, but we’re limited to fighting words with words.

As I’ve said before, the mainstream right needs to disavow this kind of behaviour: wild mobs frighten swing voters. (Same on the left: if Hillary had told BLM to shut up, she’d be preparing for office now.)

The Guardian is still wrong though. Trump won because he captured the centre-ground. The intersection between gamers and alt-right has neither the numbers nor the turnout to swing an election.

  30. There was a significant amount of death threats, doxing, and SWAT calls; however contrary to the bullshit spouted above, almost all of these were carried out by the SJW cunts either on their opponents or as false flag operations to make them look victimised.

And Zoe Quinn was doing precisely that, blowing journalists for favourable reviews. And got called for it.

  31. “She had a relationship with a journalist who mentioned her game favorably. The only debate is if the mentions happened before they started sleeping together or while they were “good friends””

The mentions happened before the relationship, so unless she’s a time traveller it’s hard to see what the ethical breach was.

“And Zoe Quinn was doing precisely that, blowing journalists for favourable reviews. And got called for it.”

Can you link to said favourable reviews? Should be easy to prove if it’s true – just link to a review written after the relationship started.

“almost all of these were carried out by the SJW cunts”

    http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/List_of_Gamergate_claims#Gamergaters_are_harassed.2C_too

If you don’t like rationalwiki, feel free to follow the citations on that page and decide for yourself.

  32. It’s also amusing how many people here are doing exactly what the Guardian article describes, which rather makes their point for them.

  33. Matthew L,
Much of what’s wrong with that RaionalWiki is what it does not include – for example on collusion, it does not mention the denials of the place for collusion existing, when it fact it did, nor does it, or AGGros (admittedly) trying to get people chucked out of a restaurant before the bombs are was called – and the sources, generally being unsubstantiated claims from interested parties, sometimes made on Twitter – aren’t more trustworthy than the Wiki itself.

Stuff like deriding claims of false flags made by GGers as being without evidence by simply refusing to acknowledge the existence of that evidence, while actually using weasel phrases to accuse GGers of engaging in false flags while being unable to provide evidence, is part and parcel of why it’s just an awful site, but the smat person can just filter that out.

Also, on another point. Trading mentions for a relationship, or trading relationships for mentions does not require the relationship to come first. If Mark Kermode mentioned an obscure film that he’d never usually mention, and a month later it was discovered that he was in a secret relationship with its director, do you think the BBC would respond with a bunch of articles about how “Radio 5 Listeners are Dead”, while gas lighting about how there was no place for collusion for the journalists?

Dennis, if GamerGate helped revitalise Breitbart (I don’t know if that’s actually true, although certainly it did Milo), and Breitbart was integral for getting Trump elected, then it does seem to have a claim to be a bit worth mentioning.

  34. I’m really baffled as to why people here are refusing to accept the truth of Gamergate. It’s just another of the occasional Lord of the Flies moments teenage boys can produce when they get carried away. That’s not surprising, nor is it (sadly) all that rare, and it’s certainly not unusual or unlikely.

Was it important, in the grand scheme of things? No. Was it a not terrifically important, but rather vile episode of boys behaving badly? Yes. Did the boys go beyond what’s normally forgiven, and egg each other on to absolutely reprehensible behaviour of a new-ish kind? Yes.
