And a warm welcome to the sexist scientists then

An open letter from women of science:

Science is foundational in a progressive society, fuels innovation, and touches the lives of every person on this planet. The anti-knowledge and anti-science sentiments expressed repeatedly during the U.S. presidential election threaten the very foundations of our society. Our work as scientists and our values as human beings are under attack. We fear that the scientific progress and momentum in tackling our biggest challenges, including staving off the worst impacts of climate change, will be severely hindered under this next U.S. administration. Our planet cannot afford to lose any time.

In this new era of anti-science and misinformation, we as women scientists re-affirm our commitment to build a more inclusive society and scientific enterprise. We reject the hateful rhetoric that was given a voice during the U.S. presidential election and which targeted minority groups, women, LGBTQIA, immigrants, and people with disabilities, and attempted to discredit the role of science in our society. Many of us feel personally threatened by this divisive and destructive rhetoric and have turned to each other for understanding, strength, and a path forward. We are members of racial, ethnic, and religious minority groups. We are immigrants. We are people with disabilities. We are LGBTQIA. We are scientists. We are women.

The I is intersex. Sorry, you just failed the SJW Snowflake test. Still, there’s always sammiches need making, eh?

  1. “we as women scientists re-affirm our commitment to build a more inclusive society and scientific enterprise”

Would you be so kind as to provide the scientific basis for carving out women scientists as particularly fit for this task. Are male scientists – again the scientific basis would be welcome here – not as suited to the task?

  2. We are members of racial, ethnic, and religious minority groups. We are immigrants. We are people with disabilities. We are LGBTQIA. We are scientists. We are women.

We are to be avoided at all cost.

  3. So Much For Subtlety

We are members of racial, ethnic, and religious minority groups. We are immigrants. We are people with disabilities. We are LGBTQIA. We are scientists. We are women.

This is just more of the long march through the institutions. Or as Iowahawk puts it 1. Identify a respected institution, 2. gut it, 3. wear its skin like a suit.

    The Left is killing science.

  4. If only these morons had shown any interest in defending Sir Tim Hunt and had been as keen on rooting out truly evil individuals – such as the charlatan who made up the story about his chauvinism. But, no just unpleasant left wing quackery.

  5. Your Pledge- Girls- is rotten lying leftist cockrot with “climate change” being the most deceitful and stupid element of your lies. It pisses on the millions murdered by socialism. Human beings need progress not the Marxian evil of a “progressive ” society.

I don’t think its merely science they are giving the big kiss-off to……

  7. “Many of us feel personally threatened by this divisive and destructive rhetoric …”

Really? Why aren’t you heads down over a Bunsen burner, or something, too busy to notice it?

  8. “Science is foundational in a progressive society”: what a shite phrase to start their letter with. But apposite, I suppose.

  9. Open letters, which rely on the agglomeration of notable names to buttress the point they’re making, thereby rest on the appeal to authority. Which isn’t terribly scientific.

    SE,

“I’m not sure that women can be G, either?”

Wouldn’t that be two women who self identify as men forming a relationship?

    Hedgehog,

Don’t bother learning it will be different tomorrow.

  11. LGBTQIA
So that would be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and ?

    Alternative?

Where I work, they’ve just added the Q – looking it up, they seem to say that it covers any non-straight orientation, so there’s definitely some redundancy in there. The L, G and B at least could be got rid of, otherwise they’re counted twice.

I still reckon it’d be quicker to just say NSC (not straight cis) and be done with it.

  12. Our planet cannot afford to lose any time.

Even schoolkids studying science understand the idea that geological time is mind-boggling in its magnitude. Any scientist who thinks the planet is about to undergo some massive change over the course of four years is not a scientist worthy of the name.

  13. You are all behind the times.

    The latest abbreviation is LGBTTQQFAGPBDSM

‘Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, flexual, asexual, genderf**k, polyamorous, bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, sadism/masochism.”

  14. LGBTTQQFAGPBDSM if this alphabet soup of complete b…..s gets any longer I will need an Enigma machine to decipher it all !

    Couldn’t we just say “queers”?

  16. I’m sure it was only yesterday I was labelled homophobic for referring to queers.
Or maybe it was Saturday. Doesn’t time fly when you’re getting old..?
    Oh Shit!
    Ageism.

Yes. Without science there would be no means of manufacturing evidence to support their policies.

But don’t forget the more minorities the more opportunity for expansion of bureaucracy, taxpayer funding and other goodies so expect it to increase exponentially. If there is one thing the Hard Left is good at, it is fomenting grievances….

  19. Isn’t “we are women scientists” usually an oxymoron, apart from the few outliers?

Stands well back as the blue touch paper burns away.

  20. “Science is foundational in a progressive society”

Said by the same arseholes who say:

    “Gender is a social construct.”

    Meaningless wank-dribble.

  21. ‘Our planet cannot afford to lose any time.’

    Correct, Tim Newman.

This big ol’ dirt ball will keep flying around the sun NO MATTER what they do. It’s SCIENCE!

“The planet is fine. The people are fucked.” – George Carlin

  22. Bloke in Costa Rica

There are no “women scientists”. There are scientists. That’s the whole fucking point of the scientific method.

  23. There are no “women scientists”. There are scientists.

Indeed. The prioritization implicit in the qualification is a dead giveaway of the inherently bogus nature of the claim. As I pointed out in a similar context on david thompson’s site a few months ago, I am not a “white, male, 2nd-amendment-supporting financial researcher”. I mean, I am all these things, but if I were to describe myself as such you ought to be wary of any financial advice I provide.

  24. So Much For Subtlety

john77 – “Some scientists are women”

Some lab technicians and some other people who wear a white coat are women.

  25. So Much For Subtlety

Sixteen women have won the Nobel Peace Prize, fourteen have won the Nobel Prize in Literature, twelve have won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, four have won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, two have won the Nobel Prize in Physics and one, Elinor Ostrom, has won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences

The more rigorous the Prize the less likely it is a woman will win it. And the more likely she will win it for work done with her husband.

  26. People here spend *way* more time obsessing about the Letc acronym than anyone covered by it.

“I still reckon it’d be quicker to just say NSC (not straight cis) and be done with it.”

There’s a strong push to just use “GSM” (gender and sexual minorities) instead.

  27. People here spend *way* more time obsessing about the Letc acronym than most people covered by it.

Some people covered by it, and thankfully I don’t have to deal with any of these, but I do get drained down upon about it when I am cooking, worry not just about the letters but the order of them.

  28. “…worry not just about the letters but the order of them.”
Quite. There aren’t enough vowels and they are in the wrong place.

  29. There’s a strong push to just use “GSM” (gender and sexual minorities) instead.

That’d work – and it’d be more inclusive. Any idea why some people don’t want to go that way?
