So, now we know

A 27-year-old university student has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder over a shooting at a Québec City mosque during evening prayers, in what the Canadian prime minister described as an act of terror.

Alexandre Bissonnette, a student in the social sciences faculty at Laval University, also faces five charges of attempted murder.

Bissonnette did not enter a plea during a brief court appearance late on Monday. Wearing a white prisoner jump suit, his hands and feet shackled, he stared down at the floor and fidgeted, but remained silent.

A local group dedicated to welcoming refugees, Bienvenu aux réfugiés, said Bissonnette’s name was familiar to them, describing him as an online troll who had denigrated refugees and expressed support for Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s far-right Front National.

Or at least now we allegedly know.

  1. So Much For Subtlety

The mate driving the car was Moroccan. We know something but we don’t know much.

Sounds like the annals of making sh!t up.

  2. A student in the “social sciences faculty”, that well-known hotbed of ultranationalism…

Sounds like the annals of making sh!t up.
    Narrative über alles, tovarich!

  3. Notice the time delay.

It seems the enemy now know they must be very careful because post Trumxit “their Brainwash ain’t making it” like it used to. This time last year “White Nazi wickedness” would have been wall to wall as soon as a white suspect was collared but now they have to be more careful.

Of course the bloke will get more coverage than all the RoP outragers put together but that is par for the course.

  4. Social science students have way too much time on their hands. Difficult to find things to do when you have four lectures a week.

  5. Hmm. I’m personally more concerned with the ‘murdering innocents in cold blood’ element of the story than the ‘bloody hell, what’s he still doing being a student at his age’ element of it.

    That’s just me though.

  6. I am surprised (nah, not really) that our little fascist gang here has misses an angle:

If this was the U.S. The liberal lobby (lead by Barack Obama, whose spokesman is referring to as “The President”) would be all over the gun control question that just “can’t be avoided”. It isn’t though; it’s Canada.

What are gun control laws like in Canada vis-a-vis the U.S?

  7. What are gun control laws like in Canada vis-a-vis the U.S?

    A lot closer to ours.

But even in the USA, a full-auto AK is illegal in many states.

  8. Just where does a 27 year old university student (yes, Rusty, it’s significant…) get a fully automatic AK..?

    In Canada, of all places?

  9. I wonder if they’ll go down the mentally ill route with this one though. Or indeed come out and say that this far right wing nutcase is in no way representative of all the other far right wing nutcases in Canada, and that rightwingery is a creed of peace………………

  10. But even in the USA, a full-auto AK is illegal in many states.

A full-auto is illegal everywhere in the US, except any manufactured prior to May 19, 1986, which must, however, be registered with the Federal Government.

  11. @jim yeah and our thoughts at this time are with members of the alt right community and the risk of retaliation.
    No, thought not.

  12. Bloke in Costa Rica

We have no idea if the gun used was a) a selective fire weapon b) an AK-47. It’s much more likely to be a civilian variant (i.e. limited to semi-automatic operation) of an AK-like weapon such as an AK-74 or AKM, which are still legally available in Canada.

  13. @Gary Taylor: and perhaps a few earnest articles in the press about how the West is antagonising the far right by allowing halal food and promoting Islamic finance, and its all of our faults that these poor put upon right wing wretches are driven to murder……………….

  14. “Just where does a 27 year old university student … get a fully automatic AK….in Canada? ”

You go to a crappy bar in a working class part of a larger town and ask the bartender if there are any guys who come in and buy and sell stuff. He may need $20 or $50, you may have to hit a few bars but within the week you will have an illegal weapon.

Lots were never turned in when made illegal and lots still come in from the USA. The USA-Canada border is nearly 9000 kilometres long. I have seen armed men walk across the line at https://disq.us/url?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.ca%2Fmaps%2F%4049.0001774%2C-110.2266744%2C3a%2C75y%2C170.53h%2C67t%2Fdata%3D%213m6%211e1%213m4%211sSAQhHxo25mHl–bzuV2Rqw%212e0%217i13312%218i6656%3AEnJ6ubj6JJBTsPPTrz7LRbz7BLI&cuid=4235850

The border is that second fence line in the background. The armed men were hunters and quite innocently crossed in a snow storm where the signs were not visible. But at night, in the dead of winter? More traffic than you might think.
