Brings tears to my eyes Polly, tears to my eyes

Off we go, headlong downhill, off piste, our Eddie the Eagle Brexit negotiators tumbling down towards a great crevasse. Far from “taking back control”, as Theresa May sends off our suicide letter on Wednesday, we will abandon all control as we place ourselves at the mercy of the goodwill or otherwise of each of the EU 27.

“We won, job done,” declared Douglas Carswell, and he’s right. The most extreme Brexiteers have so far won the day, light years distant from the softly reassuring arguments Vote Leave made before the referendum. Their promises are all broken already, as the Ukip wing of the Conservative party has captured the prime minister.

…..of joy, of course.

  1. So Much For Subtlety

To paraphrase Jessica Valenti, I bathe in the tears of Remainiacs.

Polly’s are especially sweet. Got to get a visa to visit her Umbrian villa? You could not imagine how much I care.

  2. Extra-good was the film of Alistair “scummy” Campbell freaking out in an appearance on some show with Farage (Paul Joseph Watson has the clip on Facebook ). To hear Campbell peddling the ReMainiac bollocks about Brexit “lies” was hilarious.

But as Watson pointed out Nigel Farage did miss a trick. He should have replied “Lies? One word mate…Iraq”.

The evil and hypocrisy of the middle-class left is a wonder to behold.

  3. “The most extreme Brexiteers have so far won the day, light years distant from the softly reassuring arguments Vote Leave made before the referendum.”

Softly reassuring? During the campaign you called us ra cist little Englanders who were indirectly responsible for the murder of an MP.

  4. leaving puts you at the mercy of the other 27? I thought leaving would make you more independent? I mean, you can make arguments for why leaving could be a bad thing but this is laughable and without any logic whatsoever

  5. So Much For Subtlety

Ironman – “During the campaign you called us ra cist little Englanders who were indirectly responsible for the murder of an MP.”

You? Us? OK, let’s accept your revisionism for now.

    Annoying innit?

  6. Cast-iron guarantee: If Polly is agin it, bet the house on FOR it. Saves a lot of worrying, even thinking.

  7. So Much For Subtlety

Ironman – “Go on, show the evidence for that assertion.”

Evidence that you engage in calling people racists? I am sorry but that is so funny. Especially as you probably believe it.

They are c*nts. But then so are you. The same sort of c*nt as well actually. As everyone knows. As you have proved so often and so well. If you took a plane to Brazil and paddled as far up the Rio Negro as you could go, when you finally reached as yet undiscovered tribal groups with plates in their lips, their pet parrots would be screeching about what a f**king c*nt you are.

  8. No I don’t go around calling people racists? Let alone those that vote Leave. I call you a racist. And I call you thick. And you are a prick.

  9. “We place ourselves at the mercy of the goodwill or otherwise of each of the EU 27.”

If we are at the mercy of the EU 27, as she claims, it is only because of the stupidity and arrogance of the ‘wise technocrats’ who have ruled us for the past 25 years. They took us deeper and deeper into Europe, ignoring the lack of popular support for ever-closer union. They pretended to themselves that it didn’t matter, that it was all whipped up by the Daily Express and that it would eventually die away. They’re still doing that now.

Article 50 itself is part of the Treaty of Lisbon. This was signed by Gordon Brown despite a manifesto pledge to put the incredibly similar EU Constitution to a referendum. Labour reneged on this manifesto pledge on the pretext that they had drawn ‘red lines’ on the Constitution itself that would not be crossed. The real reason, of course, was that they knew the British people would reject it and that would kill it stone dead.

So we were signed up to a treaty that would not have passed a popular vote (I think it was debated for a total of about six hours in the Commons) but whose aim was to make it as hard to change direction as possible.

et crimine ab uno disce omnes

  10. That splash was the sound of Ironman jumping the shark.

Meanwhile, on Polly, she is like all of them – they just cannot help over selling their case. They did it during the run-up to the referendum – everyone who votes Brexit is a colossal racist, this will ruin our children’s lives for generations, we are only able to find educationally sub normal people to negotiate for us etc etc – and they are still doing it now.

But thank goodness they did. If people like Alistair Darling had been front and centre of the remain campaign I am pretty sure we would have voted to remain. Allowing the British people to see their spittle flecked, nose-troughing, self appointed betters exaggerating and lying so brazenly day after day swung it against them. Everytime I think of Bob Geldof flicking the vs at unemployed fishermen on the Thames a small firework of enjoyment goes off somewhere in my brain. I have actually laughed out loud about it more than once.

Similarly, I was chatting to a guy in the pub the other day who informed me that Donald Trump was literally a fascist dictator. This on the day that Congress had told Trump to fuck off re-Obamacare. The guy in question is a well educated professional who lives in a massive house in one of the most wealthy parts of the country, and sees himself as a victim of the establishment. Truly, there is cognitive dissonance afoot in this land as there has never been before.

  11. One assumes that Polly considers a woman who divorces her unwanted husband is thereby leaving herself at the mercy of him then?

  12. Philip Scott Thomas

…our Eddie the Eagle Brexit negotiators tumbling down towards a great crevasse.

Dear God, how patronising can that woman be? Eddie the Eagle? Really? Does she know them? Can she even name? Yet she’s willing to call them metaphorically blind and inept. Such patrician disdain for her inferiors.

  13. I held off taunting, mocking or being unpleasant to some opponents last year as I was campaigning and wanted to win. My own personal petty conflicts and dickishness were not important enough to indulge as we had to win the ref.

Post result I held back too, as A50 was yet to be triggered and most remain voters accepted that consequences of the vote would follow, they are still our fellow citizens and we need them to be part of this process.

The continuity remainers could be left to themselves, thrashing about, further alienating themselves from their voters.

Now though I think it’s time overdue to be a bad winner.

Suck it up polly, you are going to be wrong about the future as much as Arthur was! Where are your hashtags and columns now!

Right let’s not forget who the small number of democratic enemies are and prosecute a war against their ambitions. Gloves off, draw blood and draw it regularly. There are some people deserving of a severe metaphorical beating now and we are free to do it!

  14. I actually find the Eddie the Eagle comparison very enlightening. Edwards did something that required great courage – even jumping with a broken jaw – and that’s more than you can say for Polly Toynbee. These wankers are forever describing themselves and their fellow travellers from the acting profession as “brave”, but they don’t have a fucking clue.

To be fair, Edwards achieved more of actual value as a plasterer than has any Guardian columnist ever.

  15. Interested, + 100
they just cannot help over selling their case

Had both sides stayed at home, Remain would have won 66/33, and just needed to avoid banging in any own goals.

And having told their readers in 2015 that the EU was a fascist-neoliberal monstrosity for crushing Greece and others, the Guardian must have created quite a few Leave voters of its own. Again with the hyperbole.

  16. Read a few of the comments. So many veering from hysteria into downright mentalism. There’ll be a lot of wet pants in London tonight.

  17. What is it about the left and the fact they have zero confidence of anyone in authority being able to do a good job?

When Labour where in power Polly was complaining. When we had the collation government, Polly was complaining. Now we have a Tory government who are dealing with Brexit and Polly is still complaining.

One of these days someone should ask who the hell she wants to be in charge.

  18. Right, our negotiators are going to be so easily outclassed by those geniuses from the EU who took 7 years to negotiate a trade deal with Canada!
Was the problem the brutal street-fighting of the Canadians, their well-known ruthlessly Machiavellian guile or the fact that Canada is such a backwards, third world, hell hole that it is incapable of manufacturing stuff to a tolerable standard?

  19. as we place ourselves at the mercy of the goodwill or otherwise of each of the EU 27.

Which is of course Remainer policy. So they are bitter foes who will hurt us but fast friends if we had voted to stay in?

Do you think Toynbee ever thinks about what she writes? Or is capable of doing so?

  20. I usually only comment on football matters on this blog. However maybe I can stretch that to other sports. Who would use Eddie the Eagle in a metaphor for off piste skiing? He was a jumper (arguably an admirable one). I am more offended by the metaphor than the politics.

  21. ‘extreme Brexiteers’

WTF? It’s digital – Y/N. How can you be ‘extreme?’

‘we will abandon all control as we place ourselves at the mercy of the goodwill or otherwise of each of the EU 27.’

This may be the stupidest thing I ever read. You placed yourself at their mercy in 1973.

  22. The sneering at Eddie Edwards really annoys me, because what do you call the loser who places bottom in their Olympic event? An Olympic athlete.

Edwards had grit and determination, put in the hard yards of both raising the money and smashing in the training to be able to compete, and is still remembered for it thirty years later.

  23. There is a long list of people – not only on the left – who have been driven clinically insane by the collapse of the left, the rise of the Tories, Brexit and Trump.

The irony of the rise of the Tories is that it was the result of a conspiracy of Miliband, Sturgeon and Clegg. They conspired to be as wankerish as possible contemporaneously.

  24. One of the problems for people on either side confidently predicting the future is the role that unpredictable fortune has played in all this.

To take just one example: suppose that Corbyn had not secured enough nominations to run as Labour leader and one of the more mainstream candidates had won. Any of them would have been keener to share a platform with Cameron and to tour the North and Wales associating Remain with the Labour party – it might have made the difference.

But instead, as no one would have predicted two years ago, Labour elected a leader who didn’t share the knee-jerk Europhilia of the modern British left.

  25. I wonder which would be more painful for Polly – having a massive baby, passing a large kidney stone, or crying the tears of a Remainer today.

  26. Edwards had grit and determination

Apparently, the first time Edwards launched off the 90m tower, was in that Olympic competition.

  27. The sneering at Eddie Edwards really annoys me, because what do you call the loser who places bottom in their Olympic event? An Olympic athlete.

And not just any Olympic sport. He didn’t run around a track and come last. Ski jumping looks absolutely terrifying.

  28. +1 Rob – anyone remember that chap from Equatorial Guinea, who took about 5 minutes to swim a couple of lengths of the pool freestyle? ‘Eric the Eel’ makes ‘Eddie the Eagle’ look like Sir Steve Redgrave.

  29. @JS
“Was the problem the brutal street-fighting of the Canadians, their well-known ruthlessly Machiavellian guile or the fact that Canada is such a backwards, third world, hell hole that it is incapable of manufacturing stuff to a tolerable standard?”

Apparently you have never attended a hockey game.

  30. Eddie the Eagle still to this day has a courage and determination that should put the fear of God into Polly and the Remoaners.

At 60 odd he still has an athletes physique.

I fervently hope that are UK negotiators are men and women of such calibre…eventer if not very god looking or with poor eyesight.
