Who would have guessed this is their view?

The Guardian view on the 2017 general election: a poll that Britain does not need

There is still the occasional spark of recognition of reality there then. They know they and theirs are going to get crushed.

The only interesting discussion is whether the Tory majority is going to be over or under 100, isn’t it?

  1. Over 100.

The Groan has often complained that Mrs May is ‘unelected’ and doesn’t have a mandate for her ‘hard’ Brexit plan (or, alternatively, that she has no plan at all). Now, she is about to get such a mandate, they don’t like that either.

As is often said, if the Left didn’t have double standards, it would have no standards at all.

  2. Tim, do you think UKIP can pick up a few seats of Labour or will the ex-Labour votes be going straight to the Tories?

  3. Why would anyone vote for UKIP now? If you want out of the EU there is one party which is offering it and the crazy thing would be to dilute that vote. I’d say at least half of UKIP’s four million votes will go direct to the Tories. The rest might stay at home?

  4. I think that bolt is shot now. Given Brexit the unifying idea is gone. If we were at 18 in the polls, thereabouts, then I’d start to think about gaining a handful of seats perhaps. From 10%? Don’t think so.

  5. I think that this election is as much about putting Sturgeon back in her box as Brexit: a fat majority has many uses. As TW points out in other posts, the SNP are never going to be better off than they are now. Even a couple of seats going from SNP to Tory north of the border would dent her ambitions.

The other side of this is that May seems popular- she’s outperformed expectations and (more importantly) she looks the part as PM. She’s doing the Thatcher playbook, for sure, but she’s appealing to the crew who made up Maggie’s core vote. Strange, when she was such a limp Home Secretary, but I think that this will be a rerun of 1983.

  6. I would fancy UKIP in any Leave seat with a strong Remainer standing for the Tories.

For firm Leavers getting shot of Remainers inside the government is important.

UKIP need to target the wets.

  7. “Wah Wah Wah… The referendum is only advisory. We need act of parliament to be democratic”

    *Act of Parliament passed*

“Wah Wah Wah… May has no mandate for hard Brexit, she wasn’t elected”

    *Calls general election*

“Wah Wah Wah… It’s not fair, Tories will win and we won’t get what we want”

  8. UKIP should probably disband its current form and come back as something new. It has no purpose now, not even as a protest vote.

  9. So Much For Subtlety

John Square – “The left are having a full on autistic fit. The REEEEEEEE is strong with this mob.”

It may just be me, but to read the Guardian or to listen to some of my colleagues, but you would think that all that is missing from making this a Deliverance re-run is a couple of banjos.

  10. The only thing UKIP could stand for now would be a hard Brexit, and they’d risk splitting the Leave vote.

It’s a shame, as they’re the ones that made it all happen (can anyone really see us having a referendum if UKIP hadn’t got more votes than Lib Dems + SNP at the last election?)

  11. Theresa May has been forced to concede a second referendum on Brexit despite working every trick in the book including cosying up to UKIP anti-immigrants and the hard right on here think this is a sign of strength!

  12. Interested:

In my constituency the Tories got 52.2% last time, UKIP 21.7%, Labour 17.5%, LD 5%, Green 3.6%.

We have a pro-Remain Tory MP, with a minor ministerial position and presumably ambitions to move higher.

Am I going to vote UKIP again? You bet. I want my MP to be looking over his shoulder at the main challenger, not plotting to make Brexit so soft as to make no difference.

  13. DBC Reed:“Theresa May has been forced to concede a second referendum on Brexit.

So, DBC, if the Conservatives win the election, will you accept that Brexit is a legitimate policy?

  14. DNR Reed: Theresa May has been forced to concede a second referendum on Brexit

Did you notice how she slunk back behind the door of No 10 yesterday to lick her wounds?

Vivan la Revolución y el pueblo de Islington!

  15. Tim, the only interesting discussion is not whether the Tory majority is going to be over or under 100? The only interesting discussion is whether the Tory majority is going to be over or under 150.

  16. Good to see DBC Reed back, although I suspect that means that the last change to his mess wasn’t successful.

“Theresa May has been forced to concede a second referendum on Brexit”
Interesting use of forced. I’ve never seen it deployed in this way. Most people see May as using a catastrophically disorganised opposition to increase her latitude for doing things right in Brexit negotiations, as opposed to having to play politics with remainers to get legislation through ahead of said negotiations.

“…despite working every trick in the book including cosying up to UKIP anti-immigrants.”

Every trick in the book? That’s uncharitable, bordering on the delusional. She’s not actually anti immigrant: she’s been firm (including during Nick Robinson’s pisspoor interview on Today this morning) that it’s about controlling the borders, not specific numbers.

“and the hard right on here think this is a sign of strength!”

Disagreeing with you /= ‘Hard right’. It does usually mean right (as in ‘correct’) though.

  17. Poor Violet Elizabeth Reed….no matter how much you thcweam and thcweam and thcweam, Brexit is happening. Get used to it or ask nurse to up the lithium dosage.

  18. DBC: Congrats. That was the single most delusional posting you have ever made –out a vast history of delusion.

    Well done indeed.

Many said you had shot your bolt, that your brain and gob were so full of socialistic shite that you had choked to death. But I was rooting for you. I always knew you would be back. Not just as insane as ever but proving that you could reach new and unlimited heights of self-deception. And you did it.

You are the Lance Armstrong of socialist propaganda.

  19. UKIP should probably disband its current form and come back as something new. It has no purpose now, not even as a protest vote.

The UKIP candidate in the mayoral election in the Tees Valley Combined Authority is standing on a platform of holding a referendum to decide whether the Authority should even exist. There’s an excellent purpose.

  20. UKIP should probably disband its current form and come back as something new. It has no purpose now, not even as a protest vote.

I may be mistaken, but IIRC Farage once said (long before the referendum) that if the UK left the EU, UKIP would have no further purpose and should disband, which I thought was commendably honest and logical. If only the SNP would do the same, but of course their motive is power, not independence, which would give them the same problems as the LimpDums in coalition.
