The Groan has often complained that Mrs May is ‘unelected’ and doesn’t have a mandate for her ‘hard’ Brexit plan (or, alternatively, that she has no plan at all). Now, she is about to get such a mandate, they don’t like that either.

Why would anyone vote for UKIP now? If you want out of the EU there is one party which is offering it and the crazy thing would be to dilute that vote. I’d say at least half of UKIP’s four million votes will go direct to the Tories. The rest might stay at home?
I think that bolt is shot now. Given Brexit the unifying idea is gone. If we were at 18 in the polls, thereabouts, then I’d start to think about gaining a handful of seats perhaps. From 10%? Don’t think so.
I think that this election is as much about putting Sturgeon back in her box as Brexit: a fat majority has many uses. As TW points out in other posts, the SNP are never going to be better off than they are now. Even a couple of seats going from SNP to Tory north of the border would dent her ambitions.
The other side of this is that May seems popular- she’s outperformed expectations and (more importantly) she looks the part as PM. She’s doing the Thatcher playbook, for sure, but she’s appealing to the crew who made up Maggie’s core vote. Strange, when she was such a limp Home Secretary, but I think that this will be a rerun of 1983.
I would fancy UKIP in any Leave seat with a strong Remainer standing for the Tories.
For firm Leavers getting shot of Remainers inside the government is important.

It may just be me, but to read the Guardian or to listen to some of my colleagues, but you would think that all that is missing from making this a Deliverance re-run is a couple of banjos.
The only thing UKIP could stand for now would be a hard Brexit, and they’d risk splitting the Leave vote.
It’s a shame, as they’re the ones that made it all happen (can anyone really see us having a referendum if UKIP hadn’t got more votes than Lib Dems + SNP at the last election?)

In my constituency the Tories got 52.2% last time, UKIP 21.7%, Labour 17.5%, LD 5%, Green 3.6%.
We have a pro-Remain Tory MP, with a minor ministerial position and presumably ambitions to move higher.
Am I going to vote UKIP again? You bet. I want my MP to be looking over his shoulder at the main challenger, not plotting to make Brexit so soft as to make no difference.

Interesting use of forced. I’ve never seen it deployed in this way. Most people see May as using a catastrophically disorganised opposition to increase her latitude for doing things right in Brexit negotiations, as opposed to having to play politics with remainers to get legislation through ahead of said negotiations.

Every trick in the book? That’s uncharitable, bordering on the delusional. She’s not actually anti immigrant: she’s been firm (including during Nick Robinson’s pisspoor interview on Today this morning) that it’s about controlling the borders, not specific numbers.

The UKIP candidate in the mayoral election in the Tees Valley Combined Authority is standing on a platform of holding a referendum to decide whether the Authority should even exist. There’s an excellent purpose.

I may be mistaken, but IIRC Farage once said (long before the referendum) that if the UK left the EU, UKIP would have no further purpose and should disband, which I thought was commendably honest and logical. If only the SNP would do the same, but of course their motive is power, not independence, which would give them the same problems as the LimpDums in coalition.
