Dear God, these people are idiots

One Tory source told BuzzFeed News this final comment relates to Google and Facebook’s growing dominance of the advertising market, which the newspaper industry believes is crushing its business model. The source suggested that if the web giants failed to act voluntarily then they could be forced by legislation to find ways to financially compensate traditional news producers.

You what?

    Ain’t going to happen. Unless someone can name the “Tory source”, I’d never trust such statements. Manifestos are full of bullshit. Unless you hear the Prime Minister herself, or one of the people in one of the top jobs saying that they’re going to do it, or it has a specific claim, you can’t believe it.

    Here’s what it’s about it:-

    “What are you going to do about fake news prime minister”

    “our manifesto covered our commitment to ensuring that quality news would be appropriately rewarded”.

    That’s all it’s about. Having an answer for the moronic tossers at the Today programme for the fashionable news twattery du jour.

    From the Buzzfeed article;

    Labour’s manifesto covers some of the same ground … But it stops short of setting out a comprehensive vision of how online culture should look and feel – and what role the government should have in enforcing these moral judgments. The Conservative manifesto has no such qualms.

    From Wiki on Theresa May;

    Her father was a Church of England clergyman (and an Anglo-Catholic) who was chaplain of an Eastbourne hospital. He later became vicar of Enstone with Heythrop and finally of St Mary’s at Wheatley, … May’s mother was a strong supporter of the Conservative Party.

    That’s the CofE and Conservative Party as they existed in the 50s through to the 70s.

    It doesn’t mean they’re not idiots, but it’s not exactly surprising.

  3. Was this Tory source a one-eyed Jock by any chance?

    I find it increasingly hard to tell the difference between Tess’s Tories and Late NuLabour.

  4. I wouldn’t mind paying for ad-free access to newspaper sites, but every paper expects me to sign up individually to their site which means I’d end up having to manage a dozen or so subscriptions at £5 a month each. Screw that.

    If I could sign up to one site and get ad-free access across the board (including Forbes, hint, hint) then I’d probably do that.

  5. I’ve got a Shire horse in the back garden and I demand £1 million compensation cos he’s no fucking use to me!

  6. ‘which the newspaper industry believes is crushing its business model’

    Print any stupid shit they want to, and expect people to keep buying it. It ain’t Google and Facebook, it’s THEM.

    ‘find ways to financially compensate traditional news producers’

    Wow. I can’t believe they said that out loud. Time to get car makers to pay reparations to descendants of buggy makers.

    Any new invention must pay off whatever it replaces! Brilliant! NO MORE PROGRESS!

  7. Only the Conservative Party would want to prop an industry at least half of which openly wants them dead and the other half only privately so because their owners say so.

    As for the proposals for curbing “hate speech” – they absolutely misunderstand who will be making this decision. They will be creating an agency for censorship which will be taken over by the Left, and the first thing they’ll do is start labelling any conservative views as “hate speech”.

    I can’t believe that professional politicians are so unbelievably naive.

  8. I think it’s in the Manifesto, so even Buzzfeed can’t fuck that up. Wording is vague though, unsurprisingly. Sounds to me like the template had a section tagged “insert loony Mumsnet pleading content here”.

    No, they’re an utterly stupid bunch of cunts. (But then they’re Conservative politicians. So I’m just repeating myself.) And totally ignoring the lesson Trump’s handing out for free, in the States. Don’t bother about placating the MSM. They viscerally hate you. It doesn’t do the slightest bit of good because they’ll not treat you one iota better, because of it. Meet them head on & seize the initiative. Make them fight on a ground of your choosing.

    ““Mumsnet pleasing”, though the error is plausible too.”

    No, I’d don’t think it is. I can’t ever see Mumsnet pleading; demanding, possibly insisting, but their too up their own arses to plead.
