Ritchie is actually proposing the declaration of a state of emergency over the Grenfell Tower fire.

No, really, he is:

I was phoned by the PM programme on Radio 4 at 4.40pm this afternoon and asked what I thought about requisitioning property for the people of North Kensington to live in following the Grenfell Tower fire.

He points to this as justification:

Civil Contingencies Act 2004

He’s arguing for something tantamount to martial law. And even if not quite that he’s insisting on the suspension of civil liberty.

Grenfell Tower qualifies as an emergency

s22 (3) (b) does not require compensation be paid

There are some 200 fire incidents each and every day. From that we can confidently predict that the stock of people displaced from their dwelling at any one time is larger than the 120 households now out of Grenfell Tower.

His argument here is therefore one that leads to a viable insistence that civil liberty should be suspended in the UK forever.

D’ye think he had his black footy bags on when he vinegared out this one?

  1. More ludicrously, he thinks the power to make emergency regulations is the same thing as ‘it is currently the law’.

It’s the sort of thing that allows your local authority to take over a leisure centre during a flood. Temporarily until the flood is over.

It is a lucky thing this monster is nowhere near levers of power.

  2. “n 2015/16, the majority of fire-related fatalities (229, 76%) and casualties (5,761,75%) occurred in dwelling fires”

Yes, Grenfell is an appalling single incident, but this rather puts it in perspective.

  3. 600 families made homeless in Cumbria flooding one night two winters ago – how on earth did they manage without Ritchie’s advice

  4. Spud is hysterically self-righteous in that post. I can’t bring myself to listen to his demented rhetoric on the dreadful Eddie Mair Show (aka BBC R4’s PM): the comments from Spud’s claque of brown-nosers are more disgusting than vulture vomit.

  5. What does this mean? That you are on the BBC list of “people guaranteed to disagree with Ritchie”? 🙂

We should make it illegal for buildings to catch fire.

Also, candidly, a state of emergency until Labour gets into power.

  7. I have not heard the programme, nor will I.

But I wonder what possible qualifications a tax campaigning zealot and part time economics (sic) lecturer at a technical college has for commenting on national radio about the aftermath of a fire? And why did the BBC think his opinion should be canvassed? In which future areas of life and knowledge might Murphy be asked to comment?

To be fair, I’m not really good at the whole empathy thing. I was annoyed at the Herald of Free Enterprise causing the cartoons to be cancelled, and my response to the Ethiopia unpleasantness was to wonder why those Twix people didn’t just buy some fly spray.

I assumed adults were just pretending, for inscrutable reasons of their own, to be sad about people they didn’t know who had befallen some newsworthy tragedy, and I’m still not sure I was wrong.

But surely even normies are getting sick of hearing about this bloody fire. Even The Crazy World of Arthur Brown hasn’t been overplayed as much as the ghoulish leftwing ambulance chasing over Grenfell.

  9. They can sniff power.

I love the way that stealing property from foreigners (only) is somehow not xenophobic just because the Left is proposing it. I haven’t seen anyone in the media calling them out on it.

  10. Is there any reason a sad, fat old blogger is permitted to live alone in a large three bedroom house in Ely, when a family in greater need requires it?

Can we use the Enabling Act (sorry, Civil Contingencies Act) to ‘requisition’ his property and give it to them?

  11. I wonder what effect the Government stealing property without compensation will have on house prices? Might make those stupid middle-class cunts who voted Labour in June think twice next time.

Obviously the BBC asked him for comment because they know he will say a lefty (i.e. correct) thing, and help to push the envelope of acceptable actions for normal (i.e. wrongthinking) people.

  13. Venezuela –having been repeatedly endorsed by his Corbness is an obvious club with which to beat he and his gang .

Time for full page newspaper ads contrasting Corb’s love of getting political capital out of one kind of tragedy while ignoring 80 murders in three months by socialist thugs armed by his pal Maduro.

All in yet another failed socialist paradise where Chavez came to power with the same kill the rich promises made by that senile turd Sanders in the US. And our own sanctimonious coprolite Jezza.

Where are the useless pricks of BluLabour?

Corbyn and his gang must be destroyed.

  14. “But surely even normies are getting sick of hearing about this bloody fire. “

Just ventured out to pick up lunch and there’s a bucket collection for it in my building foyer… :/

Good point, but from what I’ve seen, which isn’t much as I don’t often watch TV news, is that it will be stolen from one set of foreigners to give to another set.

Sign of the times in London, I suppose.

  16. The Laughing Cavalier

The Civil Contingencies Act 2004 was a disgraceful piece of legislation from the NuLabour government of Scofflaw Blair allowing government to suspend civil liberties at will. It should have been repealed after the 2010 election.

JuliaM – what happened to the good old British way of confronting tragedies with a star-studded charidee pop single?

I hear The Prodigy are free.

  18. The left needs to find its Marinus van der Lubbe – amateurish of them not to have done so yet.

  19. @Charlie Suet I was intrigued by your reference. I had never heard of him. Wikipedia says “He was born with learning difficulties.” Seems redundant, as it had previously described him as a communist.

  20. Wikipedia says “He was born with learning difficulties.” Seems redundant, as it had previously described him as a communist.

    Very good.

  21. Of course, you’d think that in a society of *responsible people* that these now homeless would have had insurance to cover this – or at least have saved up some money or had social connections to absorb this sort of emergency burden.

But then again, I wouldn’t expect that some 20% of the housing stock being state-owned in that society either.

I mean, I’m an poor unloved curmudgeon and I still could find someone to spot me a couch for a week and could pay for a couple months in a hotel in a crunch should my house burn down.

  22. What I find puzzling, given the origins of those I’ve heard about, is why they should be rehoused locally. Few seem to be born in London, nor have family there.

  23. To be perfectly honest I’m about as connected to the Grenfell building fire as I would be if I saw a block of flats in Lagos on fire on the TV. Terribly sad and all that, but not really anything to do with me.

It happens to be geographically less than 100 miles from me, but the building, the people responsible for cladding it in a sort of Roman Candle effect wrapping for ‘green’ reasons, its inhabitants and the dancing on the corpses of the dead by scumbag politicians are all utterly alien to me.

  24. Sasha commented:

“Have to hand it to you, Mr Murphy. You must have nerves of steel. Being aware of some of the foreigners own but don’t occupy properties in Kensington & Chelsea, vigorously advocating on the radio the requisitioning of some Russian oligarch’s mansion in town is not a course of action I’d embark on lightly.
    Well done sir!

If the SJWs really are concerned for the plight of the Grefell residents they should cancel Glastonbury and let them use all those tens, marquees, caravans and mobile homes. There’s even on site catering. It will also mean they can stay together as a community.

To be fair, I’m not really good at the whole empathy thing…

Nor am I – especially so for people I don’t know personally.

    +1 on your post.

  27. “…I’m an poor unloved curmudgeon and I still could find someone to spot me a couch for a week and could pay for a couple months in a hotel in a crunch should my house burn down.”

Racist! Gimme! These peoples, we is VULNERABLES.

“What I find puzzling, given the origins of those I’ve heard about, is why they should be rehoused locally. Few seem to be born in London”

Rents are cheap in the Turd World. But I is here, with nothing to contribute, so gimme…

Just ventured out to pick up lunch and there’s a bucket collection for it in my building foyer… :/

Taxpayers have already “donated” by law £5,500 to each of them. Take the bucket and contents and give. it to HMRC.

I’m sure you can replace bucket with a suitably ambiuous sign asking for donations to HMRC’s sort-code & acc. no.

  29. @AndrewC, June 20, 2017 at 1:12 pm

Bit late for more buckets. The fire is out.

    Nice, made me giggle.

    PS: @June 20, 2017 at 8:55 pm ambiuous ambiguous

  30. In other news, a failed terrorist attack in Brussels, another country which bombed the Arab world (please check this. Ed).

Live footage showing a soldier on the street with a machine gun, so life continuing completely as normal. Nothing to worry about, I remember as a child seeing armed soldiers in the cities because someone from a place I’d never heard of tried to blow people up.

  31. @BiND Have you ever been to Glastonbury? It’s like a war zone in a third-world country, but without the shooting. Much. Dust, mud, shortage of food & water. Hardly any sanitation. Robbery & occasional rape. BBC film crews….
Not a bad idea you’ve got there.

  32. Yes, I was shouting at the radio at him when he was on. “You’re actually calling for a suspension of civil liberties!!!! Are there tanks on Dover beach? Are there bombers crossing the channel?”

I was making the same point to people who were calling for the currently-executing election to be postponed – that too, due to the absense of the existence of a Parliament – would require a declaration of emergency, and suspension of civil liberties.

I also discovered that I appear to be banned from the-site-that-shall-not-be-linked-to.

  33. He’s just apeing the evil authoritarian John McDonnell who was on TV earlier arguing that “as in wartime” civil liberties should be suspended because there’s a few hundred people homeless.

Truly it is nothing less than their Reichstag fire pretext.
