Donald Trump has thrown a hand grenade into the global economic architecture that was so painstakingly constructed in the years after the end of the second world war. The attempted destruction of this rules-based system of global governance – now manifested in Trump’s withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 Paris climate agreement – is just the latest aspect of the US president’s assault on our basic system of values and institutions.
That rules based international system was democratically arrived at, was it? So therefore it’s fine if a duly and democractically elected politician finds fault with it. Democratic decisions are not set in stone after all. The people can indeed change their minds.
It was not democratically arrived at? Tough tittie then.
This is not to say that Trump is right by the way. It’s only to say that your hissy fit is unpersuasive. “He’s doing the wrong things” is just fine. “He must not do what I don’t like” is not because there’s another 7 billion of us out here as well.
