The Establishment would mount a coup against Corbyn

So says young Owen:

Civil servants will tell Labour ministers that their policies are unworkable and must be watered down or discarded.

It’s even possible that their ideas might be unworkable. Rather depends on how many they take from Venezuela, doesn’t it?

  1. The Left have spent generations suborning the Establishment. Civil servants will bend over backwards to assist the Jezzralites in the destruction of the UK.

  2. It’s okay when the deep state undermines Trump, but a completely different matter if they were to undermine a fascist Left regime.

  3. “The Left have spent generations suborning the Establishment. Civil servants will bend over backwards to assist the Jezzralites in the destruction of the UK”

It is not that it is in the interests of the civil servants to have a larger state … ehm… public choice … cough … cough…, no no, it is always a conspiracy of the darn lefties who are constantly infighting and accusing each other of being not ideologically pure enough.

  4. Civil servants will tell Labour ministers that their policies are unworkable and must be watered down or discarded.

The only surprising thing about this is that, for once, a small morsel of truth has appeared in the Guardian.

Its safe to assume that they’ve done the same to Tory policies. I also heard one senior civil servant refer to Owen Patterson the “swivel eyed loon’s swivel eyed loon” when he was SoS for Rural Affairs. There wasn’t a murmur of dissent.

  6. It’ll be about 5 minutes before they insert Momentum commissars in every civil service office. Tests for ideological purity will become a prerequisite for public sector employment etc.

Joking (but not really joking all that much)

  7. @ Serge Lang. That as well. Both parties will gain from a larger State. Gordon Brown spent 13 years inserting the “right” people into the Establishment to control QUANGOS and UK -based NGO’s. The Conservatives promised a QUANGO bonfire, which has totally failed to materialise, not even a hint of smoke. Now Corbyn, Heaven help us, is positioning to reap the harvest of Brown’s planting.

  8. Owen is correct there. UK civil servants will actively and institutionally (by which I mean power interests will naturally clash with each other within the CS and cause drag) slow down and disrupt corbyn policies that are not to their liking or easy under our current arrangements.

It’s actually very difficult to achieve anything profound or change while in government. You have so many barriers: one eye on the next election; media scrutiny which always focuses on an out of context down side; internal party factional disagreements; House of Commons opposition; the lords; senior civil servants; institutional power arrangements; funding; your own competence and whether the idea can actually be achieved in and of itself.

Think of how much a struggle brexit is.

  9. My experience of meeting Treasury officials is they refer to Labour ministers “The Minister” and Conservative chancellors as “Gideon”.

So, subverting a Corbyn government? Nah, can’t see it.

  10. +1 for Kevin Lohse.

The reason for electing tough, Thatcherite types is that they’re constantly fighting the civil service who want the opposite.

  11. I think Jones has decided to double down on Venezuela. Chazismo is based on the kind of social mobilisation that Jones aspires to. The current situation in Venezuela shows where that leads to the end of liberal democracy. So a supporter of Chavez and Maduro has two choices: either denounce the regime and reconsider their own political views (decide that freedom and democracy trumps socialism); or become more extreme and say the violence and ending of democracy is worth it.

Jones has clearly decided on the latter. Wibbling about Saudi Arabia didn’t work so now he is trying out arguments about economic sabotage. The subtext of this article is ‘they did it to Maduro, they will do it to Corbyn’. Expect him to start discretely signal he agrees with Livingstone that they didn’t shot the right people early on.

  12. “The Conservatives promised a QUANGO bonfire, which has totally failed to materialise, not even a hint of smoke.”

Yup. And if the quango budget was slashed by 90% the deficit would be closed. However, the political classes would lose a vital source of patronage….

  13. @ Kevin Lohse
You talk about Gordon Brown inserting the right people. Perhaps. Indeed, under New Labour the charities ceased being actual charities and became fronts for lefty political activism. But I doubt that he inserted the right people because he didn’t need to insert the right people. When it is in the self interest of the civil servants to boss people around, you don’t need the “right” people. The existing people will be more than happy to fleece the tax peasants and ran amok with PC nonsense

  14. Apparently Owen Jones has let down Momentum in Wales where he was meant to have participated in a training day (use of water cannon? CS gas?) at the weekend.

Instead he is putting on his new slipover and clean ankle socks and heading towards the LBC studios to broadcast to an eager public in England.

  15. As someone who has advocated sacking the entire Senior Civil Service en masse sans compo and pensions on numerous occasions I would not be at all pleased to see Corbog and McNasty stealing my ideas.

Also they would merely seek replacements from the ranks of their own creatures. Whereas I would have only a skeleton left to keep a few functions of the state in action while most Depts would simply be allowed to die.

I would not sack most lower level CS personal tho’. While most would be in no longer existent Depts, they could keep their jobs, wages, conditions and pensions. So long as they undertook their new work with enthusiasm. Which work would be border control and the hunting down/expulsion of all illegal aliens. Do your work with diligence and enthusiasm then finish out your career. Support leftism, so opposition or less than due dilligence –suffer the same fate as the SCS.

    Simples.

  16. Also–despite the weaponised leftist polls and the media bullshit-storm–it is far from certain that ZaNu’S pack of cunts are to prevail in any future election.

The youngsnot axis won’t cut it. After all have we not been hearing for years about how we are “greying” cos there aren’t enough young hence the Dindustan Express? From the same crew who spent 30 years pushing the “zero population growth” shit in the first place.

  17. Young Owen would wet his pants in excitement if such a coup happened. It would feed is opinion of himself as the valiant, good-hearted champion doomed by the vast array of enemies against him. It would mean his cherished ludicrous beliefs never result in millions of Britons literally starving and government goons shooting opponents in the streets.

  18. To think that if the socialists get in power we would be ruled by the bastard offspring of Murphy and Jones.

  19. Feck me, the comments under that Indy piece are stocked to the gunwhales with lunatics.

They really, trully walk among us.

“It’ll be about 5 minutes before they insert Momentum commissars in every civil service office. ”

And we can thank a Tory government for creating the means, with currently 80+ Spads in every ministry.
